Briefly, a Status Update

There are higher priorities than recording my thoughts and feelings on this blog. Perhaps Feb will be kinder to my schedule.

In the meantime, I continue to work on the CD to MP3 project. I ordered a Cassette to USB converter and that should probably arrive early this week. Then I will begin the process of converting my 1000 cassettes. When I say 1000 cassettes, it's 1000 albums on less than 1000 physical cassettes. I have multiple 90 minute cassettes where the first side is one album and the second side is another album. If you documented all of them into an Excel file, you'd have 1000 lines where the media is marked as "Tape." There are a lot of tapes of band rehearsals, answering machine messages from college, and mix tapes of ballads, heavy metal, and a weird series I started called "Mixture Posture," which I still like as a name of something. I don't remember where I was when I decided to use that prhase. It's a better title for my blog than anything else. Maybe I'll rename it.

Anyways, here is a snippet of the status for my CD to MP3 conversion:

Project Status

I have continued my project of ripping CDs to MP3s. This is my count of *.mp3 and *.wav files on my external hard drive:
27294 File(s) 162,887,494,272 bytes
I am in the throes of the Is, meaning I just ripped a band called "Iron Maiden." Heard of them?

Hawkeyes Sinking

This must be really frustrating. You go all the way to the Breslin Center in MI, you get all dressed up to play basketball and then... you play terrible, without intensity and without fight. And on top of all that, you just played a very good team a few days back and got stomped by them. The Iowa men's team is doing better than I thought they would. I didn't really give them a lot of pre-season love. I thought they might have potential to do better than last year, but I wouldn't place bets on it. The MSU lost is a low point to the season.

Down to Earth

We're just an up and coming band, maybe we can open for you, if you'll have us.

Pet Peeve

So here's the deal. I think that if you have a blog, you should write frequently. If you do not have anything to say, you should not have a blog. You should just give it up. I hate *HATE* going to a blog that hasn't been updated for a year or even more. The worst part is when you read an engaging entry. There was one blog I'm thinking of. It started out talking about how 6 months ago, she was engaged and now, she is single and not even speaking to him anymore. That was the ultimate cliffhanger and written months ago - like August 2011. And no updates since then.

None.

What the hell.

The people that make TV shows and movies are always giving us pseudo-cliffhangers. There's always a "is the story over or could they make a sequel" and sometimes you know it's coming before it arrives.

So, even though I have not posted since 1/1, I have been thinking about posting. I guess that counts for something, right? I have accumulated quite a few emails that I think would be excellent posts.

Projects in 2012

As the new year begins, I have a couple of projects I am working on in my "spare" time. Before I started working on this project this AM, I did a DOS command to get the number of MP3s and WAV files on my external hard drive. I am tucking every thing I call my music collection under e:\music. As you can see, I have 21186 files!

In 2012 and beyond, I am converting my CD collection to MP3s. This is a fairly easy project because I use Windows Media Player to get all the release info and I just have to babysit the CD drive for when the CD is done. It takes ~10 minutes per CD so it's fairly easy to insert the CD, walk away and do something else and/or just wait.

My second project, that I haven't started yet, is I want to convert all my cassettes to MP3. http://www.cassettetousb.com/?tid=G07& is what I am pretty sure I am going to buy. I just need to make the plunge and plop down the $60 and do it. I have an Excel file where I listed out all of my cassettes. I have 1000 to convert. I am unsure exactly how I am going to approach it. I thought about having a separate sub-folder under e:\music for cassettes, but part of me would be okay with just including them all under e:\music. The other part of me wants to know how much hard drive space I will use for only cassettes. I have no idea the number of GBs I will use.
