Sadie

The obit I wrote for Sadie:

Sadie Sigwarth, 11, passed peacefully into Dog Heaven on the morning of September 11, 2018, surrounded by her family. Doctor VetDude administered the end-of-life medical procedure as a means to ease her pain due to a tumor the size of a softball which pressed against other organs. She is survived by her adoptive parents, the Mark Sigwarth family (wife Susie and their children, Jonathan and Tyler). She had no direct descendants.

Sadie was born in 2006 in eastern Iowa and eventually settled in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She was a faithful companion and a fearless protector of the Sigwarth house. Due to her protective nature, squirrels, the mail person, and other creatures were scared away by her mere presence and fear-inducing bark. When she was not busy protecting her loved ones, she could often be found at the feet of any human who was not an innate dog lover. By nature, Sadie's purpose was to woo any such human into loving her. Sadie accepted that task many times with the same people . . . because that was the kind of dog she was. When she would see anyone she loved, she would howl in jubilation, teaching all she encountered to love each other and to cherish.

Those who are left to cherish Sadie's memory will remember Sadie's insatiable appetite. Given the opportunity, she would have enjoyed food in an endless loop. Her favorite meals included any of the following: dog food, cinnamon roll fragments, pepperoni, ice cubes, ice cream, water, Tostitos, and licorice; she was not a vegetarian and was never allowed to consume chocolate or toes. Sadie was often assigned the task of pre-washing the dishes in the lower rack in the dishwasher. She never complained once about her work.

Sadie enjoyed spending her days in a luxurious state of bliss. She could be found on beds, couches, chairs, and the floor. Despite her height, Sadie fancied herself a lap dog and looked incredulous when any human asked her to move off of the couch so the human could sit. She was always treated like royalty; both in affection from her family as well as all strangers who dared to pat her head or rub her belly. She had a favorite stuffed animal that she would retrieve when she felt like it. She was always ready to play games, such as "I'm taking your socks" or "I'm taking your towel" or "I'm eating whatever I find laying around.

She enjoyed car rides to Elkader and would often be packed and ready to go before anyone else in the household. She will be missed by her family, her friends, but not by her nemesis, The Stranger. Above all, Sadie will be remembered for her love of life and for providing comfort to each of the Sigwarths over the years.
