Worse is Which

Which is worse?
  1. [the file] has existed
  2. To be asked if you want to "overite" that existing file

The jury is hung - both are pitiful! Was there a review of the error messages by the technical writer?!?

May the Future be Bright

RE

While "today" I have no pressing need to understand regular expressions, I think it would be a good feather in my Career hat. When it comes to be that I need to understand RE, I want to remember this article: Introduction to Regular Expressions.

Looks like SUCH a Fun Band

Sharks Attack!

Money is NOT Enough

Tech workers can make $144,390 in the San Francisco, CA, area, but consider this:

While San Francisco ranks No. 1 for highest tech salary, it falls to No. 20 in terms of overall value, Paysa found. Cost of living reaches nearly $90,000 per year, with the average monthly rent for a three-bedroom apartment in the city center reaching nearly $6,600.

That's insane!

144390 / 52 weeks a year = 2776.73 weekly salary.
2776.73 / 40 hours a week = $69.42 an hour.
Here's a job that showed up in my Indeed.com jobs email:

That's a $44.42 / hour deficit (if you are making the $25 / hour rate), which gets you to $52,000 / year. That would pay for 7 months of the rent mentioned above.

14 Days!!

Celebrating the past...

while being overjoyed about the future!!!

Life is good for James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert. They are on a 2 week break until Sunday, June 4th, which is when they play in St. Louis. I knew that but I confirmed it with a quick Google search. Notice the order of the dates. At first, I thought it was a bug but then I realized it is in that order because Google knows I'm in Iowa and knows that Newton is in Iowa so it connected me to that show first before the other shows that are not near me. Clever! See below:

Alex's Favorite Band Dives Deep

From a press release I received via email:

(May 25, 2017)- Today, Beartooth is pleased and proud to share the official video for their single ‘Sick Of Me.’ Directed by Marc Klasfeld (Twenty One Pilots, Fun., Katy Perry), the documentary style video for ‘Sick Of Me’ follows the stories of four individuals struggling with depression and how each has channeled their energy into something positive to overcome it. “It’s rare that I am able to create a music video that allows other people to get their story across with such a positive message,” notes Klasfeld. “I really hope it can help anyone afflicted with depression in some way.” Watch the powerful video here.

Frontman Caleb Shomo comments on his own battle with the disease, “Depression and anxiety isn’t something you just get away from. It’s just inside you. For me it’s just always in my brain churning. It’s about fighting it and overcoming it, you can’t run away from it. You have to deal with it. This song is a big way to help. At least for me, music has been implanted in my body and what I’ve connected with. When I go on stage everything goes away. If you can choose that you will not let depression and anxiety run your life, you’re going to make it. It’s your body and your life and your choice.”

Powerful message.
Then this video came up:

And THEN.... I saw Metallica playing "Hang Up the Phone"

A Long Time Ago, There Were IT workers Too

The IT workers of Star Wars

Unbelievable but Fathomable

Montana GOP House candidate Greg Gianforte was cited for misdemeanor assault after an incident with a reporter from The Guardian on Wednesday night, police said.

No no no - NEVER throw a punch in a crowd!

One More

On January 10, 1989, Metallica released the "One" single from their "And Justice for All" album and a video for the song was introduced in January 1989. Let's go with January 10, 1989, as a starting point - assuming I heard the single on the first day it was released. That was 10362 days ago or 28 years, 4 months, 2 weeks, 1 day. According to Setlist, the song has been played by Metallica 1,393 times. I have gone from really liking it to feeling like I've heard it enough times to satisfy me to seeing this video, from their 5/17/17 concert and thinking, "Oh YEAH!!"

I would bet all of my money that they will play it in Newton, IA, on Friday, June 9, 2017!

I'm scared to find out the statistics for "Seek & Destroy"...

Coincidence or Destiny

Yesterday, I dropped off some outdated medications at the North Liberty Police Department. Since I was there, I asked if there were any empty spindles. The clerk gave me 6. I look on Craigslist today and what do I see? The following ad on the Iowa City site! Of course, no, I'm not spending $650 on this collection (though I admit that it's likely worth at least that much, if not more!) I just think it's really funny that I gained the capacity for 600 more CDs yesterday and then there's a post for just over 600 CDs for sale. CRAZY!!

OVER 619 Albums!!! +5 doubles +1 DVD +CD Cleaning items

There are at least 2 POSTERS in with the CDs inserts. I didn't check them all, but there are at least 2.

At least 3 of these albums are Autographed.

There are some really nice BOX Sets included in this collection.

(Only 58 of the CD's are burned copies, which for legal reasons, I'll be giving you the burned CDs for free when you buy my collection)

This is 25+ years of collecting music. I've finally gotten around to just putting all these on my iTunes. Everyone of them loaded. There were a couple that did not, which I did not list, but I will throw those in as well. There's also a bag of misc CD's and empty/broken jew cases that I will also include. This is, like I said, 25 years of collecting. There are a few original CD's that I no longer have the original cases/artwork for... these are labeled with "(disc only)". There are also, like I said, 54 burned CD's that are labeled with "(Burned Disc)". There are some Jewel cases that may be cracked or broken. And there is scratches on some of these CDs, but they all loaded into iTunes just fine (minus the few that I mentioned above). Otherwise this is a pretty awesome and solid CD collection!

There's more than what is pictured. Another whole bag of stuff, 2 CD cleaning machines, misc Cds....

Most of my collection is Punk, Alternative and Ska/Punk/Reggae/Rock (or at least these were my favorites). There are some really RARE and cool SUBLIME CD's and other Skunk related bands. Mostly 80's and 90's stuff.

I will eventually list these on eBay if I can't find a local buyer (There are 4 huge boxes I'd rather not deal with shipping).

I'm asking $650 or best REASONABLE offer for my lifetime collection of CDs (That's Roughly $1 a CD!)

I will ONLY sell as a lot. Cash only.

ONLY 44 Days Away from Spidey

The Commute would Get Old VERY Fast

It's rare to see a technical writing job description without mentioning at least one tool / technology.

Me? I'm extremely happy where I am. In fact, there was a different vein of work that was tapped yesterday that has me even more enthused.

Weckl Inspires Me

About UX but also About Tech Writing

While the link below takes you to an excerpt from a book about UX - specifically, Designing UX: Forms - I think there is relevance to technical writing.

Is this not true for good documentation?

Without losing sight on the fact that the article does have value, I feel a rant coming on. Why state "there are six" when the items below the statement are numbered? Why not write "Here are principles for determining the order of questions in a form"instead? Is clarity gained by repeating the number? Is clarity lost by excluding it? To me, I'd say clarity is NOT lost by excluding it.

Taking It Into My Own Hands

I sit in the lower level of my building. There's 3 floors above me. This AM, I went to each floor and in each place where it is appropriate to hang work-related notices, I hung the following flyer. I am hoping there are other musicians in this building that are interested in jamming:

Even if we don't make the June 16th deadline, maybe something else will come from it. I have worked at 5 different companies - this is my 6th. At two of those companies, I played drums in a band with co-workers. If I were able to find a band where I work now, I would be at 50%, which I would personally consider pretty damn good.

Cool Tip for the Day

On the new-to-me Windows 10 PC, I see a message that says I need to activate Windows. The person I bought the PC from doesn't have a product key. I mentioned this issue to my co-worker Ben, who sits me. He pointed me to Howtogeek.com - man I love this site! - and this article: https://www.howtogeek.com/206329/how-to-find-your-lost-windows-or-office-product-keys/

I know what I'm working on tonight...

I Guess They Couldn't Get the "Okay" to send This Out Yesterday

Don't Forget the Fear Premier is VERY Soon

The next season of Fear the Walking Dead premiers on Sunday, June 11th - two days after seeing Metallica in Newton!!

From Today and Back to 8898 days ago

Some of these I knew; others sounded familiar.

There were a few that made me long for different (not necessarily better) days.

Last night's episode featured Roman Reigns / Seth Rollins v. Bray Wyatt / Samoa Joe in the main event. The ending came when Reigns went to hit Samoa Joe with the Superman punch. Like I've seen in countless other matches, Samoa Joe moved out of the way and Reigns tried to pull his punch back but did end up running into Rollins, who was then pissed at Reigns and distracted. That allowed Samoa Joe to put his submission move on Rollins. Those four are in the Fatal 5 Way match at Extreme Rules on June 4th. The fifth member of that match, Finn Balor, was shown at the end of the episode talking to General Manager Kurt Angle. He told Angle that it was a great match but he didn't want to be left out next week. Angle made next week's main event right then: Finn Balor v. Samoa Joe v. Bray Wyatt. Angle also announced Seth Rollins v. Roman Reigns as the other match for next week.

This is what Bleacher Report reported about the match:

Grade

B

Analysis

The match quality was strong and the spot with Reigns blasting Rollins by accident, costing them the main event was a nice alternative to the smiling good guys winning the match. Joe and Wyatt putting their differences aside to secure victory was a nice take on the old "tag partners who hate each other" trope while the announcement that they will battle, along with Balor, in a Triple Threat match next week added a must-see element to the Memorial Day broadcast.

While the match still adhered far too closely to WWE's stale booking methods, it was a quality match to close out an action-packed broadcast.

Blurring the Line - Humor or Politics?

Tumultuous Backlash

While I continue to watch Monday Night Raw, I don't watch Smackdown. There was a WWE PPV last night called Backlash and the results are in: bleacherreport.com/articles/2710922-wwe-backlash-2017-results-winners-grades-reaction-and-highlights. Sounds like it was tumultuous.

Yay Me!

I'm writing this post using the new-to-me Windows 10 PC I purchased on Friday evening after work for $60. I have been setting it up since I brought it home. I have accomplished the following:
  • plugged in the wireless keyboard
  • plugged in multiple external hard drives
  • plugged in Brad Guyer's former mouse that I use at work (and take home each weekend because it's so awesome!)
  • installed Office 2016 installed (thanks to the license agreement my employer has with Microsoft)
  • installed Free File Synch (website)
  • ripped CDs like crazy!

Thankfully, it seems like the CD drive is faster than the Toshiba laptop. It's convenient to have this new PC because, for inexplicable reasons, the Toshiba laptop CD drive is acting up and not ripping CDs. I insert a CD in and nothing happens. I'd be really much more upset about it if I didn't have this new-to-me PC on my desk in the den. Having this new PC also will help me plow through the spindles. I'm ripping Spindle #20 because, thankfully, Megan was home on Friday and ripped the rest of Spindle 19 for me. She used the Toshiba laptop and her own HP laptop too to get through 50 CDs. I plan to utilize her over the next few weeks while she's home in order to plow through the spindles, if she's up for it.

Advice

Translation: Don't break anybody's heart - they only have 1 - break their bones, they have 206.

Harmonious Union

This is a quote from https://www.thoughtfortoday.org.uk/harmony-3/ - I didn't write it:

I need to recognize that like musical notes we are all different. Only when I am able to harmonize with others can I create a beautiful tune. When I work with other people, I learn to understand them. In the process, I will also learn more about myself and how to use my strengths to support others.

With 89 days remaining until we move Alex into his UNI dorm room & Megan into her UNI apartment, I am aware of being part of a harmonious union within my family.

Rain Praises

My favorite days of any year are Fridays when it rains. As far back as junior high, I remember being excited when it would rain on a Friday. I don't recall what the initial 'good thing' was that happened on a rainy Friday - I have just always had the preconceived idea that good things happen to me on a rainy Friday. Thus, with rain coming down outside, it feels fitting and proper to acknowledge some things that are planned for today:
  1. Karen's last day in her present role is today - she begins a different role in a different department with a different manager. Like when I left QDS to go to the Hell company, there are mixed feelings. You leave behind friends at the old job and have to learn to embrace new friends. In my experience, those friendships are never the same after you no longer see those friends every day. It's just different.
  2. At 10 AM, John, the tile guy, is coming to our house to finish the tile in our bathroom. I paid him $180 yesterday for the work.
  3. At 4, I am bee-lining to a house about 10 minutes north of work to pick up a PC tower for $60. I am excited to be doing this so that I can have a second PC / machine to rip CDs. I am hoping by doing this I can alleviate the issue I've been having with the Toshiba laptop, which is that the CD drive does not recognize some data CDs that I know were recognized during prior CD to MP3 conversions.
I feel like James felt in this picture I saw in this concert review - Metallica treats Nassau Coliseum concertgoers to rock party - just now:

That is the facial expression of a guy who is enjoying life and even though I can't see his face, I would like to think Kirk Hammett is smiling too. I wish Chris Cornell was alive to see that smile...

Not a Priest

From A Catholic perspective on the minimum wage:

I surely hope no one thinks the woman in the collar behind The Rev. Rudolph T. Juárez is a priest - Catholic female priests are not recognized as legit. I'm not saying that is correct - I said yesterday to a fellow parishioner that something has to be done about the priest shortage - and, at this point in time, I say leave all options on the table.

Until that day when it is 'legit' though, I follow the rules of the Catholic church.

And she's not a priest.

Thanks... BUT NO WAY!!
