Timing

Tapping memory, when I attended NCYC in Indianapolis as a chaperone in 2013, I connected with a guy selling his CD collection through Craigslist. Since then, every so often, I look at the Indianapolis Craigslist site to see what is available, knowing that I will attend NCYC in Indianapolis as a chaperone in 2015. Here's what I saw today:

I have (roughly) 1500-2000 Cd's - All artists. Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Santana, Ramones,.etc. 9 HUGE crates of Cd's . Need to sell them. Will take offers. You could resell them and make your self a ton of $$$$$..I have them in storage and I am moving. Cant take them with me. Email for more details.

Too bad NCYC isn't during the summer!

The Fall of the House of Duggar

Routinely, my wife and I watch "19 Kids & Counting" together. We often comment about how chaotic the house seems - not because there are no rules enforced in the house, but because there are 19 kids running around. The sheer number of people that need clothes to wear, food to eat, and an education is intimidating. A few days ago, the sins of the past were reported in the media. Josh Duggar, the oldest child, had molested children when he was younger. Josh Duggar is now married, living in Washington D.C., and, until this past mistake was reported, a lobbyist for a conservative group called the Family Resource. After this news, Josh resigned from his position - yeah, good luck finding another job - and TLC removed "19 Kids and Counting" from their schedule. Reading this article, I paused for a moment when I read this summary of what has happened and what the reaction to it is: "Whenever something awful happens and Christians do what Christians are commanded to do: forgive, the left simply draws a blank."

Made me pause and think about "what Christians are commanded to do" and whether I am heeding that command (to forgive) in my day-to-day life.

Potential Band

Editor's Note: While this post describes what sounded like a great opportunity, to this day, the band has the same drummer. I've removed the videos from this post because they make me sad that this opportunity never fleshed out. I did not get an audition with them.
One of the big things that happened this week was that there was a "drummer wanted" ad posted to the Iowa City Craigslist Musicians site and I responded. Without going into "Oh my, God wants me to play drums in this band!" mode too soon, it turns out that the singer / guitarist works with me - he is located not that far down the building from me. On top of that, they want the new drummer to begin this fall - tentatively September - and have a gig scheduled for March 12, 2016 in Dyersville for a St. Patrick's Day dance. At this point, I am just happy that I have an audition in early June - no definite date set as of now. I am hoping that the audition goes well and that we click. Playing in a band that actually goes out of the rehearsal room and plays gigs would be just one more component of an ideal band.

Yay! A Concert I *could* Attend

Following the disappointment that we did not attend the Godsmack / Papa Roach / In This Moment concert in Moline, IL, last night, Alex's spirits were raised significantly when it was revealed to him that Five Finger Death Punch / Papa Roach / In This Moment / From Ashes to New are playing on Friday, October 2, in Cedar Rapids.

Wow.

Of course, ever the diligent father, before I told him, I checked the Iowa City West High football schedule to see if there was a football game that he would need to march in.

Nope.

So, of all the Friday nights in the middle of marching band season that are free, that's the night of the concert.

Joy joy joy!

Even more joy when I heard From Ashes to New!

Helping the Criminals

Here's a common dilemma. On the "right", you have disgust when rich people help looters - http://insider.foxnews.com/2015/05/18/rpt-jay-z-beyonce-wired-bail-money-baltimore-ferguson-protesters - and on the "left", you have disgust that Fox News is disgusted when rich people help looters - http://crooksandliars.com/2015/05/fox-news-appalled-jay-z-and-beyonc-bailed.

Where do I fall? Well, if the looters wouldn't have broken the law, they wouldn't be in jail, right? Even if you buy into the police are targeting people by the color of their skin theory, if there is looting and people breaking the law, you choose to go somewhere else.

Still Echoes

This is an era where fans of bands can hear a new song by a band and ON THE SAME DAY posted

Friday, May 15, 2015

Long Live the King in my Mind

I admit that I am more "aware" of BB King than I am a "fan" of BB King's music. That said, in March 2012, when my employer sent me to a conference in Memphis, TN, and I was able to sit in with the BB King house band, I knew it was a big deal. I still consider playing this song as the spark for the idea of playing in a band. It was a few months after playing at BB King's when Matthew, Joe, Brian Guitar, and I formed Lou's Classic Ride and began rehearsing in 830 Studios (my basement). Upon hearing the news that BB King has gone to heaven to (hopefully) jam with John Bonham, Cliff Burton, and Ronnie James Dio, I was compelled to remember playing drums in his club on Beale Street.

Two Sides of a Coin

About 3 weeks ago, I stumbled upon a website called Crooks & Liars. By reading the content, it is definitely a website that strives to portray Republican policies as ludicrous. What's interesting about this news story is I happened to be watching Megyn Kelly as she ranted about the politicizing of the Amtrack crash in Philadelphia. While sometimes I am not swayed by what I read on the Crooks & Liars site, I think the article I linked to above is worth reading.

Thong-gate

Would someone please stop obsessing about whether Lars Ulrich was wearing a thong during the last Metallica gig and find footage of the drummer in All That Remains breaking off part of his tooth?

Wait, what. You didn't hear about thong-gate?

More Creative Than I

I consider myself somewhat creative, but the people that have created the "Star Wars Expanded Universe" are light years away from me. From this site, the line, "used to bulls-eye womp rats in [his T-16 back home]" was used to state the name of the company that manufactured the fictional vehicles in Star Wars.

Common Core, Christianity, and a Schedule that Matters Not to Me

If you believe the mainstream media, it seems Democrats are pro-Common Core while Republicans are anti-Common Core. Never one to believe in absolutes - only the Sith do that - here's one example of a Republican that is pro-Common Core, flipping the wildly held assumption that America has only two viewpoints - liberal & conservative. I disagree with that assumption. Rarely are things that easy to decipher. Making decisions on a 50/50 split is easy, but often shortsighted.

Especially, as noted by Erick Erickson in his rebuttal to the article in the New York Times that Christianity is on the decline. I like the phrasing in the opening: "The New York Times has a breathless report on the decline of Christianity in America. Much of the lefty twitterverse is celebrating the decline." The adjective "breathless" makes me chuckle a bit.

Finally, since I referenced the Star Wars universe in the title of this post as well as the first paragraph, I'll end with the news that the WriteTheDocs conference that begins on Saturday in Portland, OR, has released the daily schedule. I mention this because it has now been ~3 years, 2 months since my employer sent me to the WritersUA conference for technical writers in Memphis, TN. Sigh. I hope to attend another conference someday.

Can Roy Clark Do This?

This is too cool to be true...

Of course, then I had to hear Metallica playing it live and that sent me to this version from 2012

And then to this version from 2014

And then, I thought, if I ever wanted to have an entire page of embedded youtube.com videos of Metallica playing "Battery", this would be the information I needed:

No New Metallica Tunes

Not Writing

A few weeks ago, I realized that while my intentions are good, the reality is that I'm simply not writing music reviews. There have been moments when I thought, "I should write a music review" but it was a brief moment and the next moment was occupied with some other task. It's sad for me to admit this and to concede that none of the priorities in my life in 2015 include the idea to write music reviews. Now, when I receive an email from a publicist, I reply with the following canned text. I don't want to keep portraying myself as a music reviewer when, in fact, I am not currently writing reviews. I allow the possibility in my head that someday I will return to writing music reviews, but it will not be today, tomorrow, or probably even next week. With Megan's graduation party on 5/23 and Karen's declaration that we are having the party in the garage so it needs to look like our living room(!?!?), any free moment I have will be spent getting ready.

Hi,

Thanks for contacting me about one of my passions – music!

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of things going on in my life that seem to prevent me from writing music reviews. While I'm listed as a contributor on Dailyvault.com - http://www.dailyvault.com/reviewers.php5?id=9 - it's been a while since I've contributed a review. Whether you want to remove me from your email list is up to you. I don’t mind receiving your email – a filter set up in MS Outlook moves emails like yours to a specific folder that I intend to review periodically.

What is taking up the time I used to use to write music reviews? After several years of not playing drums in a band, I’ve put myself back into that game. You can watch some videos, including when I sat in at BB King’s club on Beale Street in Memphis, TN, here: http://prhmusic.blogspot.com/p/videos-of-me-playing-drums.html

As for the future? Well, my daughter graduates from high school in 2015 and my son graduates in 2017. I’m told, once they both graduate, I’ll have more free time. Maybe, at that point, I’ll be able to rededicate myself to writing music reviews.

Take care,

Tonight begins a week of festivities.

    New Met Tunes

This is encouraging. At the USA version of Rock in Rio in Las Vegas this weekend, Metallica may include some new tunes. By Monday, I am betting that videos of any new tunes that are played will be posted to youtube.com and then, of course, embedded within a page on this blog.

    Prince of RINOs

Can You Endure 20 Minutes of RM

For the brave only. Rachel Maddow takes 20 minutes to go through the 22 Republican Presidential candidates.

    Baltimore and Other Things

This post is meant to take a snapshot on some crucial issues facing the United States of America in May 2015.
Recently, there were riots in Baltimore and when charges in the case were announced, the wrong person - right name, just not the right person - was announced. This snafu is described here. From that article, these are the important sentences:

When charges were announced Friday against Alicia White for the death of Freddie Gray, her phone started buzzing from journalists and bail bondsmen.

The problem was, they were calling the wrong Alicia White. The elementary school cafeteria manager from East Baltimore was not the Baltimore Police sergeant charged with manslaughter in the high-profile police custody death – even though court records listed her.

President Obama was quoted as decrying the lack of federal funds going out to Baltimore but, per  this article, the numbers tell a different story regarding the amount of funds Baltimore has received from the federal government.

Moving on from Baltimore, a major issue facing our country today is religious freedom. To read about religious freedom, satanists, and abortion - my, isn't that a tease - this article attempts to sum up the issue. I quoted the part of the article that reads like a Wikipedia article because of all the links that can take you to another place in order to read related articles. It's blowing my mind.
Editor's Note: I changed the formatting after the word "read" in the next section to make it easier to read

... the left whined and complained about Indiana’s religious freedom law SO MUCH that it was all we could do to keep up with their stupidity. And if you don’t believe me, read
    1. here,
    2. here,
    3. here,
    4. here,
    5. here,
    6. here,
    7. here or
    8. here.

There's also the 2016 Presidential campaign. Hillary Clinton is running for president and this article explores why anyone would want to cast their vote for her. There's also the issue of gay marriage and that is explored in the video below:

Anything else will go into its own post.

    Another Perfect Job

From the Brooklyn, New York, Craigslist site comes this perfect job:

Rip my CD Collection to MP3 (United States)
    compensation: Cash or trade

I have a collection of approximately 500 CDs I'd liked ripped to MP3 and loaded onto a hard drive.

Willing to pay cash if the price is fair, or work out some kind of deal where you get to keep the CDs and sell them on your own. Most are in the heavy metal and hard rock genres.

I will supply the hard drive. MP3s must be ripped at 320kbps, with all correct metadata included (tracklisting, album and artist name, cover artwork, etc).

I will drop off CDs with you.

I doubt the person is coming from Brooklyn to the Iowa City area to drop off these CDs. Rats.

    More Supreme Court Information

While pro-gay marriage & pro-traditional marriages groups await the decision by the Supreme Court, this article attempts to look at the cases that have been decided in the past. I am not a lawyer & I don't play one on television. That said, if I knew more, I'd probably guess that since it was posted on a known Conservative website, it will be trying to argue that viewpoint, which is no different from reading articles on MSNBC trying to argue the liberal viewpoint.

My point is that by the end of June, which is when the decision is expected to be announced, there will be happy people and sad people.

    Got Aware of Your Surroundings?

Personally, I think it's insensitive to have a billboard with the phrase "White Pride" in a section of the country (the South) that has had to deal with an organization like the KKK. The reason I linked to this article is because I'm on the same page as these statements:

Personally, I think it’s stupid to be so wrapped up in your skin color that pigmentation becomes something you’re “proud” of, whether you’re white, black, blue, or green.

Why be proud of something that’s a mere external characteristic you had no control over?

How about being proud of the contributions you make to society? What about taking pride in helping others, feeding the homeless, fighting for your freedom, or something like that?

That is stated very plainly and clearly.

    More Baltimore

    http://freedomoutpost.com/2015/05/baltimore-truths-half-truths-lies/

    New & Old Band News

New Band News: After the fiasco in Memphis, Five Finger Death Punch are doing damage control. Per this article, they've issued an apology and released a new song from their forthcoming release.
Old Band News: Per this article, yesterday was the 27 year anniversary of Queensryche releasing their opus "Operation Mindcrime." I still remember being in Chad Elick's house and hearing the opening of this album and being blown away.

The Breaking Up of a Band

Speculation about the demise of Five Finger Death Punch has been the buzz of the metal websites I frequent. I was first alerted to this when I saw this on setlist.fm:
I remember thinking that when I saw the Memphis in May 2015 lineup, seeing Five Finger Death Punch would have been probably the only reason I would want to go - the other bands didn't really cause a strong reaction. And then I read that the band I would have justified going to Memphis in May to see only played 3 songs?!?

Of course, now, FFDP released a statement of apology, citing technical difficulties. From what I can tell, FFDP is NOT breaking up. I would have been extremely disappointed if I were in the audience when the above went down.

    Moonlighting

From the Craigslist New Jersey site comes this ad:

Will transfer your CD collection to digital backup (Somerset County)

I will move all your CD's to digital format.
    This is considered a "backup".
You need to tell me how many CDs you have and I can give you a quote.
All media removed from the CD will be in the best quality possible.
I don't take shortcuts and I pride myself in the work I do.

    VERY AFFORDABLE RATES!!!!
I'M THE CHEAPEST PLACE YOU'LL FIND!!!

If you have any questions, please call, email or text me. I will get back to you within an hour.

And from the opposite coast (San Francisco), comes this ad:

Professional CD ripping service (walnut creek)

Professional CD ripping services that include:
*Ripping your purchased CD collection to high quality lossless ALAC or FLAC file formats
*Editing of CD's ID Tag information (Artist, Genre, Cover Art, etc.)
*Backup to portable hard drive, blu ray media, or Cloud storage
*I also handle large difficult to rip and edit Classical music CD collections
*File format conversions from ALAC or FLAC to formats such as MP3 are also available

Your CD collection is typically ripped (for your personal use) to a network attached storage drive (NAS) which lives on your home network and can be accessed by any network connected computer or media players such as Sonos, Smart Blu Ray players/TV, etc.

If you are interested in my services please reply with the number of CD's to be ripped and contact information. I will contact you to discuss costs and options. I look forward to hearing from you.

AV Setup Help also offers the following services at reasonable rates:
*Audio video system design, setup, and remote control programming (URC)
*Wireless & wired network and NAS drive setup
*High performance streaming/NAS based house audio distribution systems.

I would absolutely love to set up a side business like this - ripping CDs for other people. It would be so much fun because, yep, that's right, it's a conversion. I'd even do photographs, cassettes, and vinyl! I'm not sure I'd want to get into VHS to digital because that would be a lot of babysitting the conversion process.

Unfortunately, with all that is going on in life right now, I don't feel I have the bandwidth to add another thing. Karen and I spread 25 bags of mulch around the house yesterday and estimate that we need another 5 to finish the task. I knew a year ago that May 2015 was going to be crazy and, now that it's here, I was right in my suspicions. Here's the high level schedule for just the weekends leading up to the 4th of July:

    Saturday, May 9
In the morning, Matthew & I are installing the replacement lights for our front porch and garage.
In the evening, it’s Megan’s senior prom.
    Sunday, May 10

    June 28
    Tentatively, Alex’s drumline camp

And the following weekend is the 4th of July!

    Scratch the Blue

Editor's Note: Playing with Blue Scratch is not going to happen.

I'm really excited for 6 PM tonight (it's 7:50 AM now) because I'm going to Jay's house. Jay who? Jay, the bassist in a band called Blue Scratch. Blue Scratch had a post on the Iowa City Craigslist site for a drummer, I responded, and, through email conversation, jamming today at 6 was set up. Below are the songs Jay sent me as their set list. Songs 2-38 are in-progress tunes while 39-79 are ones they already have in their set list. Assuming the rehearsal / jam goes well, it's looking like I will be back in a band after a 8 month, 1 week, 3 days - 253 days total - break. It will also mean I need to resume practicing on the Yamaha electronic set on a regular basis to get my chops up because, again assuming every thing goes well, there is a gig on Saturday, June 13th (the Saturday of the Sigwarth campout) in Marion. In fragile negotiations, I may be taking a second vehicle to Elkdader and then driving from Elkdader to the gig on Saturday after 5:30 Mass (depending upon what time the gig is scheduled to begin). Already, I'm thinking through every thing I would need to take with me on the Wednesday night we'd head to Elkader.
