Explanation

Today, there are 26 blog posts being published. The first was at 4:30 AM and the last will be at 5 PM. This is to 'bump' me up to a 2 posts / day quota to reach 5000 posts by the end of 2017. It's a silly challenge I gave myself.

Tired but A Good Job Done

On Saturday, I was awake at 5:45 AM. I left to get in line for the annual North Liberty Spring Clean-Up Day with my Ford F-150 partially full of junk. I was the fourth person in line at 6:20 AM. The gate opens at 7 AM. I was unloaded by 7:15 AM and returned home. I putzed around on the laptop, desperately trying to do the following:
  1. Finish the April volume / section of the 10 year project
  2. Rip additional CDs on Spindle #18
At 8:15 AM, I was off again to a retreat at church (St. Thomas More) that lasted from 9 - 12. I talked to my friend Jim after the retreat and got home at 12:30. I made a sandwich and watched some M*A*S*H* and Roseanne on TV.
At 2 PM, Alex returned home from his shift at Fareway. By about 2:25, we were in the Ford F-150 & on the way to Cedar Falls to get Megan's furnishings and clothes from her dorm room. It was about 5:00 when we were done with that task. We went to Burger King for supper.
After dropping Megan off back at her dorm, I filled up the truck with gas and then headed home.
On the way home, we listened to Metallica's Hardwired to Self-Destruct album. Also, Alex and I discussed his speech for his class. He was scheduled to give his speech on Thursday but, as of Friday, we learned he has to have knee surgery on Thursday. I strongly urged him to be prepared for giving his speech on Tuesday since he will miss Thursday and the following Tuesday is his last class and there is a final test.
When we got home, we unloaded the F-150 with Megan's stuff. I needed to take a break so I sat down about 8:30 PM and wrote this post. I will go finish putting Megan's stuff away soon when I finish this post. It's tricky because I don't want to just dump her stuff in her room because she needs to have it nice for people staying at our house on May 27th (Alex's graduation) and June 3rd (Alex's graduation party). I don't want to create a total mess.

20 Films To See

Since I like numbers - NOT! - I was curious about one of the effects of reading this article - 2017 Summer Movie Preview: The 20 Films to See - which is that if I did see all 20 of those movies in the theater, how much money would I spend? For the sake of argument, let's assume each movie ticket costs $10. That's 20 x $10 = $200.

Nope. I'm not seeing all 20 of those movies in the theater.

Oops!

Neither Alex nor I, as of this precise moment, recall which hotel we are staying at for Chicago Open Air. I have taken all the emails we have received in our standard email account, dumped them into a .txt file, then dumped them into a .docx file and am searching, right now, for keywords like "hotel" or "IL" or "confirmation" or "reservation" - all of which have many hits. I used this macro https://word.tips.net/T000041_Sorting_by_Headings.html - to sort the 806 page document by heading to (hopefully) make it easier to find.

Is Context Not Everything?

I found this picture in the bowels of my external hard drive. I have zero idea what the arrows on the screenshot are trying to say - I don't believe I put the arrows on the screenshot. I think this is from a help system for a consignment store software.

Things that you should Never say to an I.T. Person

What's something that you should never say to an I.T. person?

I think "What's something that you should never say to a technical writer person?" would be a great topic as well. Off the top of my head, based upon phrases I have actually heard:
  1. Writing is easy.
  2. I don't want you to edit the document - just make it look nice.
  3. Use one space after a period unless it looks funny; then use 2 spaces.

The Cost Of Privately Accumulating My Thoughts

I have mentioned in addition to this blog, I am writing in a journal called the Ten Year Project. I have 24 x 5 subject notebooks, 200 pages each, college ruled. I began on 1/1/2012 and will finish on 12/31/2021, but I have to say I finish on 1/1/2022 because technically it would be 9 years, 11 months, 4 weeks, 2 days instead of 10 years.

I never tracked the sum of purchasing 24 x 5 subject notebooks, 200 pages each, college ruled. I plan to have a "To-Be-Titled-Later" phase II that will begin on 1/1/2022 and include up to 12/31/2031 (or technically, 1/1/2032). How much am I investing in this project? Using the picture below

- and minus sales tax & shipping, these are my options:
  • My bill is $263.76 if I purchase 24 of the notebooks that are priced at $10.99 each.
  • My bill is $330.96 if I purchase 24 of the notebooks that are priced at $13.79 each.
  • My bill is $345.36 if I purchase 24 of the notebooks that are priced at $14.39 each.
There is $81.60 between going the $10.99 route and the $14.39 route. Currently, I do not plan to order 24 x 5 subject notebooks, 200 pages each, college ruled, in one purchase order... but if I did, would I get a discount?

Not Really a Search

I would never call the following a "search" because in order to find information, you don't actually 'search' the same way you do when you are on google.com. To use this 'search' on this web page, you click a letter and it takes you to a sub-page. It's an 'index' but it's not a 'search' - at least to me.

But what do I know? I only have 22 years, 2 months, 2 weeks, 4 days (8113 days) of experience as a technical writer.

More Ticketmaster Woes

I also got an email from Ticketmaster that had the following empty spaces:

Well, why the empty spaces? Simple. Each artist has two gigs in Iowa but instead of repeating the picture, they left it as an empty space! The problem is that there's nothing to identify the artist associated with the second date. I had to click on the "Get Tickets" button to figure out why there was an empty space.

I wish there would've been a way to consolidate the content to make it easier to understand.

Cumbersome!

I purchased two (2) Chicago Open Air 2017 - Three Day Passes. I wanted to know when the delivery delay would be lifted, as it says on the "My Account > View All Orders > Order Details page:

When I clicked the "Event Detail Page," it acted as if I had never purchased tickets. I had to click several more times to find out the "delivery delay [is] in place until approximately 5/8/17."

The Ticketmaster.com site is very cumbersome. I left the above as my comment.

What they should have done is taken out the first sentence in the note. I'm already on the Three Day Pass page. It's more important to tell the user "there is a delivery delay in place until approximately 5/8/17" instead of clicking yet again:

Matthew Fray Does it Again - PERFECT

I really REALLY enjoy reading posts by Matthew Fray on his blog. This is just a small piece of an overall great article:

Sometimes I’m smart and know things. Like indisputable fact sort-of things. And I’m capable of getting frustrated or overtly angry if I hear or read someone “being wrong” about this thing I know.
Sometimes I just think I know things, but actually don’t. A false belief like I used to have about the Tooth Fairy, or how afraid I should be of getting on a ridiculously fun roller coaster or of jumping off high-dive boards into swimming pools.
When we believe we are Right or Correct, or that our opinions are Better or Worth More Than, we often argue or debate the point with anyone who disagrees.
And that is often the person we married or have a serious relationship with, simply because they tend to be around the most often.

I like this article because of a conversation I had with Alex the other day. He said something to the effect of that he wasn't interested in listening to someone vent as that person told him about 'things that don't matter' to him. Indirectly quoting Matthew Fray, I said to him something along the lines of 'The issue may not be important to you but it is likely very important to the person venting. As their friend, you have the role of listening to that person vent.'

In my reading, he said "times" in place of "by."

In yours, he left out the value of the multiplier for the operation to be performed 20 times. If his writing is that sloppy, it needs more than style cleanup.

I have to disagree: 3 x 2 is the same as 2 x 3; and both are the same as 3 x 1 x 2.

The order of the digits doesn't matter. The result is still 6.

This is correct and wrong at the same time.
"Three times two is (equals) six" is not ""three multiplied by two is six."
"Three times two equals six" is stated as two multiplied by three equals six."
The order is important, while the mathematical result is the same. "Times" is a count of how many times an ingredient or process is used. "Multiplied by" what is used to increase the ingredient or process.

So for 3 x 2 = 6, if "times" is used, then 2 is the thing being increased and the phrase is "three times two."
If "multiplied by" is used then the meaning is that you have three of something that you are increasing by two.

The phrase being addressed is, "multiply the absorbance of the dilution times 20." Accuracy of the order of things is important here. What it sounds like the scientist is saying is either, "multiply the absorbance of the dilution 20 times," or "multiply the absorbance of the dilution by 20." The meaning of the two interpretations can differ whether the formula represents a process or a factor. Context is necessary.
