I'm Ducking DONE

This is the tipping point, the ducking point when I can not do it anymore. I am ceasing the updates on my Get Your Political Opinions Here pages. I am going to leave the link in the list of pages, but will be updating the title and moving it to the last link.

https://freebeacon.com/politics/hirono-criticizes-conduct-fbi-investigation-sexual-assault-allegations-kavanaugh

"We need the FBI to investigate."

The FBI is going to investigate.

"The FBI investigation is not credible."

Sarah Sanders slams 'absolutely disgraceful' handling of Kavanaugh accusations, vows WH won't 'micromanage' FBI probe

Let me guess a popular reaction to that article...

She lies! You can't trust her!!!!

I ducking give up.

I am done with political CRAP on this site.

I am done pretending.

I might not have the strictest logical reasoning skills - I do like Lamb of God but I don't like Cannibal Corpse - but my God, it's nuts to discredit what you said you wanted. Liberals scream On and On and On about how the FBI needs to investigate and THEN, before it starts, discredit what you just said you had to have ...  before you even know what it's going to find. It's ducking hypocrisy to say that the FBI investigation into Russia and the 2016 election is credible - it's by the FBI - but then say that the FBI investigation is not credible. Which is it?

On top of that, when BK's name was announced announced months ago, there were members of the Judicial Committee that declared, "I will fight the nomination." That's before a single question was asked of him. And I am to believe that the investigation by the FBI will matter to those members?

Kind of Funny, Kind of Not

For reasons that are unknown to me at this precise moment in time, "438_425_Current.xlsx" will not open within Excel. On my external hard drive, the first file I saw when I searched for a recent backup has a modified date of 10/1/17, which is a year ago on Monday. After I took the above screen capture, I found a more recent backup from 7/3/2018. I'm very confident that a backup from last week exists on an external hard drive at home. It just struck me as kind of funny, kind of not funny that the most recent version "back" from the most recently used was modified just under 1 year ago.

At #10, it says this:

Jørgen Munkeby, Shining: “The main riff on Beautiful People is the best ever metal riff written in 6/8! It’s got the balls. It’s got the bravado. It’s got the swing. It’s got the rawness. It’s even got the ominous tritone interval securely etched straight up in the middle of it, like an unholy metal spine!”

I had zero idea the song was written in 6/8!

Want to Hear my ST Story?

I'll just say it: I wish that Riverside, IA, had the facility to host this event tonight since William Shatner's most noted character - Captain James T. Kirk - was born in Riverside, IA. Spoiler warning: I'm not attending this event tonight:

I have a history with Star Trek & "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" movie. It was the first Star Trek movie I ever saw. I saw it with John Rath at the Westdale Four Movie Theater. The movie was released on June 4, 1982, when I was (exactly) 12.5 years old. I know I saw it in the theater. Because I had never watched the TV series or seen "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" I don't have a positive connotation when I think about the movie. Perhaps I had a kind of subtle knowledge of Captain Kirk and the others due to pop culture but it wasn't enough. I had no idea what was happening. I remember the 'bug in the ear' scene - perhaps why I am sensitive to videos about bugs being pulled out of ears on youtube.com! - and Ricardo Montalbán played Khan - I knew that actor from his time on the TV series "Fantasy Island." As far as why Khan & Kirk were enemies? I had no clue. All of that text to say I have zero desire to pay $62 to see a movie that was released 13265 days (36 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days) earlier to the September 28, 2018, showing.

I Like BK Even More

At Quintrex, each year, each employee could have a calendar, which I took advantage of so, after working there a number of years, I have a pile of calendars. I don't have an inventory of what years I have or how many, but I know exactly where they are located in the den. I like to look back at them, especially when I would keep very careful documentation about events that I needed to attend as well as other events. In more recent years, I would add references to concerts taking place on specific dates.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh released his calendar from 1982 the other day, which is displayed below. I love it. Absolutely LOVE IT! Why? It reinforces the notion I have to never throw away any of the calendars in the aforementioned pile. Not because I am going to be nominated to be a Justice on the Supreme Court or anything like that but because it documents my life in a way that only words in a journal or pictures in a photo album cannot.

As a side note, I don't want anyone - not family or friends or strangers - to read any of my journals. I think that since I have endured my journalitis in solitude and in private, the audience for my journals is me and NO ONE ELSE!!! In fact, I need to write up a document that says what I want done with my stuff. I think, at my wake & funeral, if you come, you should leave with a spindle of CDs. Given that there are 51 spindles - and close to 400 more CDs to be converted - I hope I have at least 55 people show up to my wake & funeral.

I digress. Here's BK's 1982 calendar, which I learned about on this page: https://www.westernjournal.com/kavanaugh-detailed-calendar-summer

How Stupid Software Developers Can Be

It amazes me how stupid software developers can be. I just saw this on Microsoft: Upcoming Windows Update Might Fail If Your Hard Drive is Too Full Justin Pot @jhpot September 21st, 2018 and I'm mystified by what I read.

Full hard drives could cause an upcoming Windows update to fail,
according to Microsoft,
and the system will not check for adequate storage space before installing.

Side note: The above sentence could use a rewrite to end up like this: According to Microsoft, full hard drives could cause an upcoming Windows update to fail and the system will not check for adequate storage space before installing.

Back to the point of this post. Just who in the h-e-double toothpicks thought that it would be a good idea to add a check for adequate storage space before installing?!?!? Do software developers ever use software?!?!? I can't imagine any software developer I know who wouldn't throw a temper tantrum if they went to install new software that didn't check for adequate hard drive space prior to installing the software. Why? Simple: software installers have been doing that type of check since at least 1994, when I worked with a PC that ran Windows 3.1 and had a hard drive without adequate hard drive space to install Office 97. I remember inserting my 3.5" Install Disk 1 and seeing an error message that told me "You dodn't have enough space to install this!" Thank God for HowtoGeek.com, which offers this piece of advice:

We recommend trying the Free Up Space tool, shown above. Find it in Settings > System > Storage to free up some space before running the October 2018 update.

Too bad howtogeek.com has to pick up the slack of stupid software developers.

Editor's Note: You should not infer that the author believes ALL software developers are stupid.

Behind the scenes of a rescinded job offer

Disclaimer: This has never happened to me, I've never known anyone that has been offered a job and then had that offer rescinded, and I'm not looking for a new job. I came to know of the Ask the Headhunter site during my job search in January 2016 and I subscribe to his newsletter - it's the only reason I saw this article.
That all said, I found this article about a rescinded job offer - Behind the scenes of a rescinded job offer - to be fascinating.

Take This With a Grain of Thought

From WWE Hot Take of the Week: Crown Jewel and Super Show-Down Are Lazy Cash-Grabs:

Our first example of this was Greatest Royal Rumble. It's major selling point was just taking one of WWE's biggest matches of the year and making it bigger. They couldn't even think of a better title than to put "greatest" beforehand and slapped together the blandest and quickest logo possible, too.

Really?

It's major selling is what was intended, which translates to It is major selling.

Its major selling is what was likely intended, which leads me to rant a bit by saying how obvious it is to me that the writer used the smallest grain of thought possible to confuse "its" with "it's" in that sentence. I wasn't expecting much since the opening sentence promises to be "where the gloves are off" because "it's time to rant." Funny how "it's time to rant" is actually correct in the opening sentence, but by the 4th paragraph, there's not a care in the world regarding confusing "its" with "it's" in the article.

As I've pondered in other posts, I have the curse of seeing shitty writing and not being able to leave it alone.

Water under the bridge

After being laid off from Pearson, Transamerica was one of the companies with which I interviewed for a job. Obviously, it wasn't a match. The job below isn't the job we discussed, though I have to wonder if it would have been more appealing than the position they had open at the time. And, because I like to be crystal clear, NO, I'm uninterested in applying or pursuing this position, though I would like to know how they define the "Normal office environment" phrase used below.

My Perspective

From http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/ozzy-osbourne-slayer-judas-priest-alice-in-chains-ghost-set-for-australias-download-festival/:

As he approaches 70 later this year, Osbourne said he wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren after five decades on the road. "I love my work, it's amazing ... Jack's three little girls," he said. "They are wonderful, except when they come over to the house, wreck it and leave."

Meanwhile, this is the lineup for Download in Austrailia and, well, 1 - 6, 8, 9, 12 are good... so that's 9 out of 23 - 39% won't get me to buy a plane ticket to go see it.

Upcoming Concerts in the Area

Honestly, I would love to go see all five of these concerts. I like all 5 of these bands and I've seen 2 of the bands - 5FDP & Seether - within the last 5 years. I think my first 5FDP show was in January 2012 in Cedar Falls and the most recent was in October 2016. Seether, of course, was at Chicago Open Air 2017. That leaves Ghost, Primus, and A Perfect Circle. I'm far from an expert on their material, but I would still like to see each of them.

Understanding and Using Batch Files

I just purchased this book: https://store.tips.net/T002509_Understanding_and_Using_Batch_Files.html
The following is what sold me on the book, which is not available in the link above:

Good morning!
I'd like to share a small story with you that is only partially tongue-in-cheek. Bear with me for a moment, if you don't mind.
I remember when I was young, and we would tiptoe around the house, making sure we didn't disturb my dad as he was working on his computers. (It always seemed we had more computers in the house than people, pets, or anything else our friends had.)
In the evenings we would gather around the family hearth as the wind whistled by the windows. Dad would tell us stories from the early days of computing as firelight flickered on the walls.
He would thrill us with stories of programs acquired and scare us with tales of data lost. We would learn the importance of word processors, the power of programming languages, and the wisdom of backing up your data.
As I sat near my dad's knee, paying rapt attention to his every word, I always wondered how he was able to do such marvelous things with computers that, by today's standards, had less power than my cell phone.
One day, not long ago, I was talking with dad. Though he is older and grayer now (heh!), it still amazes me that he was able to do so much with his systems in the days before Windows. So, I asked him about it. His answer?
Batch files.
Yep, batch files. I'd never heard of them. (Or, if I had, I hadn't paid a whole lot of attention.) So, I asked him to explain how they used to work. He mentioned that batch files were still available in Windows, which surprised me even more.
As he started to show me how to use batch files, I began to suspect that there were are lot of other people in the same boat as me, not having any idea what batch files were or how they could be used on today's Windows systems.
This led me to suggest that, perhaps, dad would want to put together an e-book that would provide the explanations and offer the examples necessary so that you (as well as myself) could learn how to put batch files to work.
Well, dad just got the e-book done. I'm pleased to announce the immediate availability of Understanding and Using Batch Files, a brand-new e-book that answered all my questions (well, all my questions about batch files) and opened up a side of Windows for me that I didn't even know existed.
I invite you to take a look at this awesome e-book, as it can provide a "behind the scenes" peek at how batch files work and provide the knowledge you need to put them to work for you. You can find out more information about Understanding and Using Batch Files at this site:
I've priced this e-book at a very affordable level ($24.99), but I also know it is our company's long-standing tradition to have a special sale whenever an e-book is released. So, for a limited time (through October 3) you can get your own copy for only $17.49. That's 30% off the regular price!
I invite you, again, to consider this great offer. You won't find better information about this powerful Windows feature anywhere, and now you can get it at a great price.
To get the complete details visit this Web page:
Don't delay; this special offer is available only for a couple of weeks; it ends on October 3, 2018.
Thanks for your continued support of WindowsTips!
