Where Do You Go from DE? Apparently, To the Sandman

I've heard variations of the story Lars Ulrich tells in this article - Lars Ulrich: The Song That Marked the Peak of Metallica's Progressive Side "Five minutes of, basically, what we jokingly call 'math metal,'" the drummer says. - which, in summary, says that playing the long tunes - like the title track among others - on the "And Justice for All" album on tour was not something they wanted to do. Guitarist Kirk Hammett said something about this when he said in some interview that he felt like the audience was bored. Thus, in the Big Picture, that's why the ideas for the next album - the Black album - focused on shorter songs. I used to think that there was someplace to go after "And Justice for All" that would take them to a Dream Theater-type place with even crazier time signatures and such and that that was the Metallica I wanted to hear, but, as time has gone by, I realize that bands that play record the same album over and over really don't trip my trigger. Plus, honestly, if Ulrich and Hetfield wanted to go the polar opposite and write an album with :30 second songs, like *n*l C*nt, then that's their prerogative as no one can be more knowledgeable about Metallica than the 4 guys in the band.

Here are the comments about the above article, including the "Justice was the last good Metallica album" & "Bob Rock ruined the band" stereotypical comments that seem to show up when an article is penned about Metallica.

Editor's Note: You may have wanted to point out when Star Wars fans say that "George Lucas ruined Star Wars with Episodes I - III", they are being idiotic since George Lucas INVENTED Star Wars and it's his story to tell. Good for you for not being distracted by the obvious tangent....
