COVID-19 Cases in Iowa

Facing confirmed community spread of COVID-19 in the state, University of Iowa Health Care has activated clinical contingency plans to cover potential challenges in staffing and to conserve medical supplies, reports the Gazette. Critical and emergency surgeries will continue, but elective and non-urgent surgeries will be postponed. Outreach clinics are closed for the next three weeks to reduce the risks of patient infections.

On a brighter note, UIHC on Tuesday discharged an unnamed Johnson County resident who is the first Iowan to be admitted to a hospital while suffering from community spread of COVID-19, reports KCRG. The hospital revealed it was treating the patient on Sunday.

Two Collins Aerospace employees at the company’s C Avenue facility in Cedar Rapids have been quarantined off-site for 14 days after showing symptoms similar to those of COVID-19, reports the Gazette. The pair, who did not meet the public health guidelines for coronavirus testing, are just two of the latest in Iowa's rising count of COVID-19 cases, pegged at 44 by Gov. Kim Reynolds as of Thursday afternoon. She added that the state is not considering a shelter-in-place rule such as the one implemented in San Francisco, reports the Des Moines Register. Iowa saw a slight increase in unemployment insurance claims last week as the coronavirus crisis began to take hold, but the figures don't reflect the school shutdown and halt to dine-in service at bars and restaurants that came at the week's end, notes the Press-Citizen.
