Spelling in MS Word

I have found the following notes that I made some time ago. They might help you work out what is happening.

For a word to be marked with a squiggly underline indicating a spelling error

  1. The word is not in the default language dictionary
  2. The word is not in a custom dictionary.
  3. The word is not in a foreign language dictionary that is applied to all or part of the text
  4. The word is otherwise valid but is in the ExcludeDictionary
  5. ‘Check spelling as you type’ must be on
  6. ‘Hide spelling errors in this document’ must be off
  7. There is fewer than 1400 spelling plus grammar errors in the document
  8. The individual word is not flagged to be ignored
  9. The word is not in a block of text marked with NoProofing
  10. The paragraph’s style does not have ‘Do not check spelling or grammar’ set.

Where to find the settings

  1. Review tab > Language > Set Proofing Language
  2. File > Options > Proofing > Custom Dictionaries
  3. Review tab > Language > Language Preferences
  4. Add exclusion words with a text editor to the .lex file for the default dictionary.
  5. File > Options > Proofing > Check Spelling as you type
  6. File > Options > Proofing > Hide spelling errors in this document
  7. Review tab > Spelling & Grammar. Step through spelling errors one by one
  8. Right click word and chose Ignore. Also Review tab > Spelling & Grammar
  9. Review tab > Language > Set Proofing Language > Do not check Spelling or Grammar
  10. Style > Modify > Format > Language > Do not check Spelling or Grammar
Some settings apply to the user’s Word installation and some are attached to the document. For example ‘Check spelling as you type’ is user specific and if turned off will suppress squiggly lines on any document opened by that user. ‘Hide spelling errors in this document’ is attached to the individual document and will be applied if another user opens the document.
