Snapshot of My Work

Today, I am a Senior Technical Writer. My employer needed Disaster Recovery Documentation and on this day, in 2016, I started this job! I have been in this role for 3287 days (9 years). I am now 9 years beyond my Job Search 2016!

When I come to work, I log into my laptop which is connected to 3 monitors. If I open the lid of my laptop, I can actually use that screen as well. The first task I complete is to open a DOS batch file, located in the C:\RH folder which includes the commands necessary to back up my main RoboHelp DR-Doc project to the S:\Technical Documentation\_Storage folder, where my backups are stored in a folder structure by Year -> Month -> Day, which I prune in December.

The DOS batch file copies all of the Microsoft Word templates in my C:\Users\prhanson\Desktop\Templates in the RH folder.

I also store other projects in the C:\RH folder:

"C:\RH\20240830-MappingWordStyles"
"C:\RH\Dr-Doc"
"C:\RH\Dr-Doc-20250128"
"C:\RH\DR-Doc-20250303"
"C:\RH\DR-Doc-20250324"
"C:\RH\ESC"
"C:\RH\MappingWordStyles"

When I select the folders in the C:\RH folder and then right-click to view Properties, this is my result:

Automatically Highlight Key Data Video

From https://www.myonlinetraininghub.com/automatically-highlight-key-data-in-excel?awt_a=f2Zj&awt_l=el1rKn&awt_m=gZ6VIDi3J9VR.Zj comes this intriquing idea. I was initially curious by the title as, in my mind, I was thinking about my MP3s that have names like this:
  1. 01_Enter Sandman_Metallica_Metallica_Spindle-G-GGGG.mp3
  2. 01_Enter Sandman_Metallica_Metallica_Spin-G-GGGG.mp3
  3. 01_Enter Sandman_Metallica_Metallica_Spindle-G-GGGG-MP3.mp3
  4. 01_Enter Sandman_Metallica_Metallica_Spindle-G-0000.mp3
  5. 01_Enter Sandman_Metallica_Metallica_Spin-G-0000.mp3
What I am showing in the above example is the messy state of my MP3s. The above example reflects the multiple naming conventions I have tried to implement while never fully getting the job done. I thought, by the title of this article, I would be able to flag all but #5, which, I thought, I could specify, somehow, as being the standard to be followed in a file name after the 4th underscore. I'm not a super-duper proficient analyzer of data and every morsel of my analytical skills come from working as a Technical Writer since 2-10-1995, a mere 10987 days (30 years, 1 month, 1 day) ago.

Multi-level Dependent Drop-down Lists

From https://www.myonlinetraininghub.com/multi-level-dependent-drop-down-lists?awt_a=f2Zj&awt_l=el1rKn&awt_m=giF57GPw89VR.Zj:
The majority of Excel users struggle with this one thing.
They set up drop-down lists manually.
They waste time updating them.
They think dynamic dependent lists are complicated.
But what if I told you there’s a formula that does all the heavy lifting for you?
- It updates automatically when you add new data.
- It removes the guesswork.
- And yes, it’s way easier than you think.
In this video, you’ll discover two game-changing ways to create dependent drop-down lists in Excel: one is super simple, and the other? A total mind-blower!
Download the sample file here!

Flashback: Approval for UIHC in North Liberty

Remember this?

Rapid Reaction: Iowa collapses in 2nd half in Music City Bowl

Sigh.

I was really REALLY hoping that Nashville and the Music City Bowl would be an exclamation point for the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes. Given the chance to end the season with 10 wins was a great opportunity and they fell short.

I'm not one of those Facebook "fans" who wants Kirk Ferentz fired or for him to be kicked out the door, never to coach in Kinnick Stadium again. Am I "satisfied" with the loss? Of course not! However, I have to say there's a reality to football games, which is "two teams can't win."

It's that simple.

Someone has to win and someone has to lose. Unfortunately, Iowa was the team that lost in Nashville, TN, on 12-30-2024.

Was it a game that Iowa could have won if one or two plays not played out the way that they did?

Absolutely!

Iowa committed a terrible penalty (supposedly) which allowed Missouri to go from a 3rd and 24 to a 1st and 10. Had Iowa not done that? Well, Missouri was on the ropes at that point in the game. If Iowa had gone for a 1st down on a 4th and 2 instead of punting and successfully went 2 yards, the game outcome might not have been the same. As it turned out, Missouri went 3 and out and kicked it back to Iowa. Iowa started marching down the field until it got to be 4th and 1, and, with time running out, Sullivan's QB sneak was stuffed prior to gaining the necessary yardage to get a 1st down and that was how the game ended, with the football returning to Missouri with a 27-24 lead and Iowa not having the football to score. Missouri did two snaps of the football in what is called the "Victory" formation and that ate up the last minute of the clock.

For the next 242 days (7 months, 4 weeks, 2 days), which is when Iowa will take the field at Kinnick Stadium against Ualbany (per https://hawkeyesports.com/sports/football/schedule/season/2025-26) for the first time in the 2025 season, there will be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth as fans complain about Coach Kirk Ferentz and the direction of the program. A lot of armchair quarterbacks will proclaim that they could have coached the team better than Coach KF did last night - I actually read that comment on Facebook after the game. Coach Kirk Ferentz has been the coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes for as long as my son Alex has been alive as Coach Kirk Ferentz took over the program in 1998 and that's the year Alex was born which means that the 2026 season will be the 26th season for Coach Kirk Ferentz.

As far as whether Coach Kirk Ferentz should retire - he is 70 years old as I write this - I am going to say, "Yes, he should retire" but not because of yesterday's loss or anything to do with his coaching record.

I think Coach Kirk Ferentz should retire because life doesn't have a known expiration date and I want Coach Kirk Ferentz to be able to sit down on a Saturday afternoon in his home and watch a NCAA football game on TV, perhaps with a cold beer or some other beverage in his hand. I think Coach Kirk Ferentz should enjoy life before he is pushed up against his mortality.

And I'm typically the person that openly says I want to work until I turn 66 in December of 2035 and still work until Friday, March 28, 2036, just so I can reach 20 years in my current role as a Senior Technical Writer. I say that because I'm not the person that typically thinks about the calm after a career that I am encouraging Coach Kirk Ferentz to enjoy.

I wrote all of this post without watching any of the video embedded below.

Help Me Understand

She turned 60 and is going to step back to spend more time with her kids... who go to school... during the day... because the kids are above the age of 4, so at this point, I am unsure what is the purpose for this. It seems to me that now is actually when it makes sense to be working during the day... because the kids are not home. I am confused... https://www.dailywire.com/news/today-show-host-announces-shes-leaving-to-focus-on-raising-her-kids

Work in Manila and Your Boss is in Burlington, MA

I don't think I've ever mentioned any job that is based in Manila in the 13,022 posts on this blog.

The manager for this position is in Burlington, MA, which is a Boston suburb. Can you imagine how much better it would be if they hired a resident of the USA (for example, me) instead of a Technical Writer in Manila? A USA-based Technical Writer would be less than a drive away whereas actually going to Manila, Phillipines, would be a 33 hour, 20 minute plane ride.
