Breaking All the Rules

There's something really funny going on here, in no particular order.
I just don't get it. If Liberals want to do something about Trump, they have their chance in November. Once again, I did not vote for Trump, but I also didn't vote for HRC. I watch MSNBC as much as I watch Fox News.

Oh Boo Hoo Hoo

I'm disappointed in this decision.

In order to do pretty much anything in government, you have to have research performed to look at all the relevant facts and to then have that research presented in a report that has a conclusion and a recommendation. After reading State not pursuing I-80 tollways, despite being financially feasible, all I can think about is if you are going to have a study performed and pay people to do that study, why in the hell would you not listen to their conclusions?

Oh, I know! I know! When FEAR dictates how to govern. Take Kapucian's quote below at face value

Sen. Tim Kapucian, R-Keystone, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, said another challenge in Iowa is that tolls often motivate motorists to take alternative routes. In Iowa, when you can enter and exit the interstate at several locations across the state, those detours could force congestion onto back roads, he said.

Fear should not guide your actions as an elected official! More disappointment follows:

According to the study, revenue generated from 11 tolls, from Council Bluffs to the Quad Cities, would be enough to fund a nearly $4 billion six-lane widening and modernization of rural I-80 across the state, if all lanes were tolled. Those tolls would also fund continued operations and maintenance of the 248 miles of interstate.
“No additional public funding would likely be required,” the report states.
Toll rates would be 8 cents per mile for passenger vehicles and 24 cents per mile for trucks, with an annual 2 percent increase in toll rates to account for inflation, the report states.
According to the report, the revenue from those tolls would cover the five-year widening project, proposed for 2022 to 2026.
However, Lowe said the roughly $3.6 billion upfront cost — and potential debt financing that goes with it — of the tollway project goes against Iowa’s “pay as you go” mentality. In addition, I-80 is only congested in certain areas, which means widening the interstate isn’t a current need across the entire state.
“From a planning side, we don’t need 6 lanes by 2027,” Lowe said.

Lowe, you really don't know how to read. There's a conclusion in the report government paid for, written by experts, but damn! Lowe can't his head out of his ass and accept what the experts tell him. How does he know this? Is he suddenly more of an expert than the experts who wrote the research?!? Liberals ought to run ads against Republicans that say, "Look at the government wasting money, paying $XX.XX dollars for experts to research toll roads, receiving the recommendation to do it, even when financially feasible, but no, they are stupid politicians."

More on the subject:

State leaders pump brakes on I-80 toll road proposal

Iowa officials are giving the cold shoulder to a proposal to begin charging fees to pay for road improvements along Interstate 80. Despite a new report by the Iowa Department of Transportation saying it would be "financially feasible" to set up 11 toll booths across the state to fund $3.8 billion in rebuilding and widening costs, Gov. Kim Reynolds told the Des Moines Register Iowans were not interested in tolls. Under the proposal, cars would be charged eight cents a mile and trucks 24 cents a mile to rebuild a 248-mile stretch across rural Iowa over a five-year period. Ms. Reynolds' comments were echoed by Iowa DOT Director Mark Lowe, who said tolls were "not a good fit for a rural, farm to market state like Iowa." The toll road scheme is also opposed by groups like the Iowa Motor Truck Association, which is pushing fees on gasoline and diesel to pay for the improvements.

Sigh. Every time Iowa tries to shed its "we're farmland only" impression, Iowans use it to justify their opposition to some proposal.

Is There any Music President Trump is Passionate For?

In today's age of political divisiveness, where Catholics state they are pro-abortion, perhaps just so they are not aligned with President Trump (I don't know - I'm Catholic and pro-life so I can't speak on their behalf), maybe music is a way to unite our country. Of course, no matter the genre, President Trump would not benefit. There are a trillion sub-genres and I'm betting he could not state he liked a single sub-genre without causing controversey because I have a feeling that if President Trump said he liked:
  • Metallica, metal fans would suddenly be Beyonce fans
  • Garth Brooks, country fans would suddenly become Classical music fans (because there are no words)
  • Ice-T, the liberals would immediately point to the lyrics of "Cop Killer" and call Trump a hypocrite
The teaser for this article - Denmark’s Prime Minister surprises Indonesia’s President with a Metallica box set Posted by Zenae Zukowski on November 28, 2017 - asked the same question that I used for the title of this post:

I think it's a fair question. Has someone tweeted the question to President Trump? Maybe he would answer for my birthday present - I am 48 today.

Then DO Something

I am really tired. My resistance to thinking Congress should do something about DACA, that President Trump is being unfairly treated by the media, and that our country is being divided equally by BOTH the Liberals and the Conservatives in our country is unpopular. If I were more active on Facebook and refuted the claims I've seen from my Facebook friends about each of those items, I would have a full-time job.

For example, take DACA. This article about DACA - Ending DACA would damage the provider workforce - touts how ending the program would have zero benefits and only harm children who were brought illegally to this country. No one likes the word "illegal" when discussing immigration. No one really uses that word in these articles or when discussing the subject. Instead, teaser headlines like "An end to protection for those brought to the U.S. as children wouldn't directly impact a large number of would-be health professionals, but it would worsen provider shortage issues, particularly in already underserved areas" emphasize how great these children are and how they contribute to society. There is rabid indignation when the suggestion is made to even consider deporting even one of these kids and, no, I'm not supportive of any kind of mass deportation.

Where I come down on this issue is that Trump has decided that Congress has to do their job. He gave them 6 months to come up with legislation. What is wrong with passing a law to make these policies permanent? What possible evil could come from that? I don't consider myself a blind Tucker Carlson disciple but I watched him make this point in one of the videos I watched. He said that people who come to our country illegally come because their homeland or where they are coming from often is in chaos. Perhaps there are drug lords who rule the town or a civil war - take your pick or add any other form of chaos - but the bottomline is that there is chaos. The appeal of America, then, is that there is America is a nation of laws. Sure, there are drug lords who rule towns in America and the gun control debate is one that threatens to divide us, but from a mile-high view, I have to believe there is an American culture of people who are good people. For example, after the Las Vegas shooting, people stood in line to donate blood. There was a picture on ABC News of two people who had gone up to a policeman and hugged him.

If I were a Democrat - fully admitting I lean Republican on a lot of issues - I would be drafting legislation to make DACA permanent. I would have a coalition of Republicans and fellow Democrats locked in a room to hammer out a deal that would put forward a bill that both sides could support. Sure, there are extremes on both sides - Ted Cruz doesn't want any sort of amnesty - and Nancy Pelosi wants everyone to be welcomed immediately. It seems like the aforementioned article sees that:

With President Donald Trump threatening* to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, dozens of medical groups are pressing Congress to approve legislation that would create a pathway to permanent, legal residency for undocumented individuals brought to the U.S. as children.

But that doesn't seem to be the focus I hear about on the news. Instead, Democrats and Republicans trade accusations of anti-[pick a race or culture or set of beliefs] racism. For Democrats, it's accusations of Republicans being anti-Muslim & anti-African-American; for Republicans, it's accusations of Democrats being anti-American by putting the rights of illegal immigrants above the rights of citizens. Both sides are always eager to projectile vomit out their narrative. Both sides are gearing up to make their narrative be the one to shape popular opinion so that on November 4, 2020, which is only 1126 days away, their party wins. Some are focused on November 6, 2018, which is 397 days.

Because I don't claim to have the answers, I have no idea what is going to happen.

* Editor's Note: President Donald Trump did not "threaten" to end DACA. He said Congress needs to do their job and pass a law.
