For decades, I have been curious about the technology I encounter daily.
This dates back to at least 2005. My curiosity led me to receive the RoboHelp MVP award for answering questions in the Adobe forums. I point to the fact that I would seek out WinHelp (.hlp) files. If I saw something I wanted to implement into my WinHelp files at work, I would download the WinHelp (.hlp) file - many times to my PC at home at my leisure (off-work) and then decompile the .hlp file in order to figure out how the original technical writer implemented the cool thing I wanted to implement in my WinHelp files at work. At the time, I was working with a master.cnt layout of connecting 100+ WinHelp files seamlessly into what looked like a single WinHelp file. It was truly awesome.
So that's the background for why I was looking at this email I received this morning. I spent a couple of minutes drawing lines from the email preview on the left to the corresponding text on the right. The question is: where is the text in green on the right side? My best guess is that there's text in the HTML code, somewhere, that shows that text in the green box on the left, but not on the right. Maybe? I do not know...
I received this email today and noticed how the first two sections are centered while the second two sections are not. I chalk this up to not reviewing the email prior to sending it. As a technical writer, I'm constantly trying to make sure I don't have typos or errors in the documentation I create and then distribute. I have this quote taped to the outside of my cubicle at work:
I do my best proofreading after I click Send.
This email is an example of why that saying exists.
I am growing increasingly disgusted with blogger.com. A couple of months ago, there was a 'refresh' of the UI and I'm not a fan. One small detail here or one small detail there wouldn't bother me, but my experience is not as minimal as one or two small details being irksome. Instead, it feels like when I compose a post, there is some new small detail that is irksome. For example, I have embedded hundreds of videos from YouTube.com on this blog. When I have added the HTML code for the video to be embedded, the way it used to work is I would see the video preview when viewing the page in the "WYSIWYG" (What You See Is What Yo
u Get) view. However, now with the new UI 'refresh' on Blogger, I see the following:
Is it a big deal? To me, yes, it is. I have no "formal" training in HTML so every morsel of information I have about coding HTML is from working on Blogger, where I can either toggle from WYSIWYG view to HTML view, or working in Dreamweaver, where I can view both the "Design" of the page and the "Code" at the same time. I rely upon toggling or viewing between the two views to ensure I have not made a mistake in my HTML code.
I was only going to mention two small details I find irksome, but when I added the above picture, I realized another small detail that I don't like in the UI 'refresh' which is the way that pictures are added to a post. It used to be that if you selected the "Image" icon in the editor toolbar, a window would pop up where you could choose the source of the picture you wanted to add. If you wanted to change the source of the picture, there was a tab you could click to instantly change the source. Now, you get a menu and choose your source and, based upon your choice, the Add images window displays, which (now) has no way to change the source! In conclusion, I have looked at what it would take to migrate from Blogger to an alternative, but I don't have any plans to migrate.
