I am Soooo Out of Touch with the Music Industry!

I am out of touch with the music industry.

I don't think this is a sudden new reality in my life. Instead, for as much as I have always tried to have my finger on the pulse of the music industry, I have continuously been overwhelmed by the number of bands that exist. I still receive "music industry-related" emails from publicists and often, the bands that are in these emails that advertise a new album or EP often have existed for decades, but only through the email do I learn of their existence. Several years ago, I realized that for every band I know and like, there's a strong possibility that other bands exist that (likely) sound very similar to the bands I like - their existence has just never made it to my finger that was trying to feel the pulse of the music industry, for whatever reason. Just because I haven't heard of the band doesn't mean that they didn't exist, to paraphrase and re-purpose the saying "If a tree falls and no one hears it, did it make a sound?" For me, if a band exists and tours and I don't know of its existence, does that band exist? Well, of course, the answer is yes.

So, at this festival later this year, there's a list of bands that are playing. In fact, this is the list of bands that are playing in alphabetical order. If a band is in bold below, it is a band I have heard of in the past. I am making a distinction between hearing of a band and actually listening to a band. A band that I have listened to is in bold/italics below.

Spoiler Alert: I've heard of 6 bands (6.451612903225806 %)and I have actually listened to 4 bands (4.301075268817204 %), which means I'm at a pitiful point in my music awareness. I imagine that the target audience for this festival knows over 90 % of the bands in this list.

Here is the list of bands playing at the Firefly Festival in Delaware in September 2021:

  1. Almost Monday

    The Bell is Silent

There's a 27 year-old bassist in Iowa City that lists the following bands as his influences, which I'm including here because I cannot hum a single tune by even one of these bands. I've heard of After the Burial, Parkway Drive and I've heard of Portishead, but none of the others ring a bell. That said, I am going to find these bands on youtube.com to learn what I am missing. As of right now, none of these bands would be on a setlist in my Ideal Band, but I allow for the possibility that I can be persuaded to the point where I would include one or all of these bands on my list of favorite bands.

Editor's Note: Gave up after 3 bands.
    1. Aegaeon
    2. ATB - my assumption is ATB means "After the Burial"
    3. Chvrches
    4. Daughter
    5. Eisley
    6. Imogen Heap
    7. Japanese Breakfast
    8. Kye Kye
    9. Now Now
    10. Parkway Drive
    11. Portishead
    12. Purity Ring
    13. Silent Planet

Hell Would Have to Be an Ice Cube

    I hope it's a successful festival.

    I will say that
    • NOTHING that would get me to this 3 day concert in IL, which starts tomorrow. It's a really crappy schedule. On Friday and Saturday, there is (literally) five minutes between the band ending on the "Failure Stage" (what an awful name!) and the band starting on the "Nuclear Blast Stage." What if you wanted to see bands on both stages?!? For example, I've heard of Milwaukee's Jungle Rot and Grave (don't know where they are from). Jungle Rot finishes on their set on the "Failure Stage" (what an awful name!) at 11:05 PM and, then, Grave starts at 11:10 PM on the "Nuclear Blast Stage."
    • 49 bands playing is quite impressive. That's 49 drum sets that have to be set up and torn down, at least 49 bass rigs, and at least 49 mics to set up for the vocalist. If there are two guitarists in each band, that's 98 guitar rigs to set up. Plus, if there are any backdrops with the band's logo? Plus any sort of stage things, like a platform for the singer to stand upon while he sings?
    • I would love to be in the backstage area to learn what it takes to get the bands from the backstage area to the stage and then backstage. I sincerely hope all the bands are cool to each other and to the people who are putting on the festival.

Fixation Spine Antagonize Rule Them All Jesus Piece Miracle Drug The Dividing Line Struck Nerve Drowse

I'm SOOOO out of touch with the music industry! The press release below specifies that Fixation will tour with
    • Spine
    • Rule Them All
    • Jesus Piece
    • Miracle Drug
    • The Dividing Line
And how many have I heard in that list?!?

    ZERO

    Read more below:

WAR Records will issue the latest rapid hardcore anthems from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's FIXATION, putting the final touches on the band's Into The Pain EP for release as a flexi and on all digital platforms May 10th. The cover art, track listing, and more have been issued as the band announces a run of East Coast spring tour dates.

With an emphasis on lyrical potency and fast, aggressive songwriting, FIXATION has pulled no punches since their formation in late 2017. Comprised of current and former members of Drowse, The Dividing Line, New Heart, and Time's Up, the band delivers combative, pointed hardcore for fans of Rival Mob, Nerve Agents, Arms Race, Youth Of Today, No Tolerance, and Infest.

FIXATION has taken their anthems on the road across the Eastern and Midwest US on several tours, performing alongside Strife, Regional Justice Center, Rule Them All, Vantage Point, Leeway, Miracle Drug, Chokehold, Vitamin X, Restraining Order, and others, and has performed at FYA Fest, This Is Hardcore, and other notable gatherings over the past two years.

Into The Pain explodes with FIXATION's take on classic, ripping hardcore, unloading four agitated tracks in under five minutes. The EP was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Wyatt Olberholzer at The Knife Lair (Year Of The Knife, Struck Nerve, Drowse) and finished with artwork by Linas Garsys (American Nightmare, Ceremony, World Be Free).

Watch for preorders, song premieres, and much more on Into The Pain to be released over the coming weeks ahead of its May 10th street date through WAR Records, the label founded by Andrew Kline of Strife and Berthold City.

    Into the Pain Track Listing:
    1. The Role
    2. Spare Me
    3. You Feel Nothing
    4. No Class
FIXATION will tour live surrounding the release of the Into The Pain flexi and throughout the year. The band hits the Northeast on a run through Providence, Lindenhurst, and Philadelphia April 26th through 28th alongside Spine and Rule Them All. May sees them playing Richmond, as well as several shows scattered throughout Pennsylvania with the likes of Jesus Piece, Miracle Drug, The Dividing Line, and others. Additional tour dates are to be expected shortly.
    FIXATION Tour Dates:

    Another Band Skips Iowa

From a press release email I received:

After 12 years of relentless touring on a steady flow of EPs and LPs, underground rock mainstays The Coathangers took a moment to recalibrate and reconfigure before diving into the creation of The Devil You Know, their new 11 song album due out March 8 on Suicide Squeeze Records. Recognizing that each member had become entrenched in their own style of songwriting (guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel excelled at the melodic pop songs, drummer/vocalist Stephanie Luke belted out the gritty rock tunes, bassist/vocalist Meredith Franco drove the post-punk and no-wave angles of the band), the trio became determined to meld their established takes on vitriolic punk, playful house-party anthems, and heartworn ballads into a new sound that captured the vitality of their early years while honing their individual strengths into new communal achievements. The result of this newfound discipline, depth, and dimension is the first Coathangers record written as a true unit, as each member learned how to imbue their bandmates' songs with their own personal touch.
