Tribute to Rush that I DID NOT Write
A friend of mine years ago told me that when you’re traveling through the town of Misery don’t stop to look around. I thought it was good advice. Neil’s passing hasn’t been easy but I take comfort in believing a couple of things. First, he set out to be the best he could be and I think he achieved that beyond measure. Second, he didn’t care about fame or fortune yet he acquired both as a “consequence” of his actions. He lost a family yet gained a new one. Some never do. He had a second family in Geddy and Alex, something I’m sure he never took for granted. Many great bands didn’t have what Rush had, the Beatles certainly didn’t, Kiss doesn’t , and Metallica doesn’t. There’s no feeling of true brotherhood in those bands like Rush had. They worked and got along perfectly whereas other bands fought and hated each other to the point of breaking up. Neil had a loving family and loving band mates. He literally had everything most people wish they could have and that’s leaving money and fame aside. Most importantly I believe that the man who couldn’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend did us all a favor by not telling us what he was going through. We feel as though Neil is family and I know how I would feel if a family member is fighting a no win battle. It would suck beyond all measure. He spared us that and I believe it was his last and most important selfless act for his fans. Thanks to Geddy and Alex for taking on that burden for us all. Rush is like no other band in the world!

Context for NP's Ludwig Poster
In the aftermath of Neil Peart's passing, I found the poster I used to have on the wall behind me in my parent's basement online. There is some context about this poster that I can tell in what I hope is an entertaining story. Plus, everyone else is sharing their Neil Peart stories so it compels me to share mine as well.
First of all, I ordered the poster from Ludwig. To order a Ludwig poster meant you sent them a check for either $2 or $3 to cover the postage. When I would put a check in the mail, there always seemed to be enough of a gap between when I put it in the mail and my ability to remember that I had done so because when a tube would show up in the mailbox, I think I was always surprised... because enough time would pass for me to think about other things.
Thus, when this poster was released, it represented a distinct and monumental change in the drum industry. Until this point, Ludwig had been pushed to the second tier of drum companies. Tama and Pearl ruled the industry, with Yamaha taking a strong #3 position. Now, all of a sudden, Peart had switched from playing Tama drums to Ludwig drums.
Personally, it was sweet vindication. My parents had purchased a Ludwig Vistalite set of drums in 1984. Then, as I got older, I would order drum catalogs to drool over these huge drum sets I felt like I would never own, which turned out to be true! The only set of drums I have ever owned is that Ludwig Vistalite set of drums that are stacked in the furnace room in the basement. Anyways, when Peart switched to Ludwig, it added to the awesomeness of owning Ludwig drums. Sure, Alex Van Halen played Ludwigs but this was NEIL PEART! Sure, John Bonham played Ludwigs, but now NEIL PEART played Ludwigs! It didn't matter that Peart's Ludwig drums and my 5 piece Ludwig drums looked nothing alike!
The epilogue to Neil Peart switching to Ludwigs is that he was involved with a contest in Modern Drummer magazine to give away three of his old sets. I remember that you had to submit a tape to the magazine to be involved and then, per the contest rules, Neil Peart would listen to all of these drum solos and then pick the "best" one.
I never submitted a tape because I lacked the self-confidence in my drumming to do so. That's the only reason I can accept when I look back on it now. I was a teenager and I wanted to be an awesome drummer like Neil Peart but I lacked the ability to translate what I wanted to do with the ability to actually do what I wanted to do. In other words, I lacked the conviction to learn my rudiments, to practice daily, and to improve my timekeeping abilities. Some days, when I look at the Yamaha electronic set in the den and I contemplate whether I want to practice drums or do something else, I feel like that teenage boy who would read comic books instead of work on his drum lessons. It's a character weakness in myself I struggle with on a daily basis. Someday, I want to grow out of that teenage boy's bad habits and be better.

I can't imagine Neil Peart would ever need to introduce an article he wrote with the following:
Right? Yet, the fact that more drummers will be exposed to Guglielmo's drumming through the article and through the embedded video is a good thing for sure!

Reacting To Neil Peart From Rush Drum Solo
To me, it's "wrong" to try to rank drummers. Everyone has their favorites. Many drummers would say, "Oh, Dave Lombardo is better than Lars Ulrich" or even "Buddy Rich is better than Louie Bellson." Know what? Dave Lombardo, Lars Ulrich, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson are ALL tremendously awesome drummers.
That said, I like watching AyeJay reaction videos. Here's the video, followed by my comments about some of the comments under the video:

New Fun Thing to Do
There's something really cool about seeing people who are unfamiliar with the music I love react to the music I love as they hear it for the first time. To paraphrase one of the comments from the "HIP HOP HEAD FIRST REACTION TO LED ZEPPELIN - DAZED AND CONFUSED" video below, watching somebody fall in love with The Music That I Love for the first time brings me so much nostalgic joy. To go back and hear those songs for the first time... bliss.

Disrespectful
I steal. It's that simple. When I play drums, I am stealing from Joe Morello, Stewart Copeland, Lars Ulrich, John Bonham, and Neil Peart - among others I'm not thinking of at this precise moment. I hear someone's drum beat and I think about how I can use it in something I am playing during Mass.
For example, when I nail anything that this drummer does on the Yamaha electronic kit in the den, I will groove to it in a live setting:

which I saw in this video:
That is why when I saw this bullshit Tommy Lee is spouting about how other drummers stole his roller coaster drum riser idea from him, I couldn't stop thinking about how true the first sentence of this post is.

Tommy Lee probably would say that listening to "Band A" and "Band B" inspired him to play drums when he was young. That's what drummers do. They listen to music, try to duplicate what they hear and, from there, they likely invent their own variation of what they hear. It's disrespectful to read that Tommy Lee wants to take credit for anything in his drumming. He's not being honest. When he plays 2 and 4 on the snare, that's Ringo Starr, who played drums long before Lee was born. When Lee opens his hi-hat on the off-beat during "Dr. Feelgood," that sounds like The Police's Stewart Copeland's playing on "Every Breath You Take," which came out in 1983 - "Dr. Feelgood" was released in the early 90s.
One other thought. Isn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery?

Make Good Choices
Today's Thought for the Day - Choices - is a beautiful summary of how I really try to live my life. I am not 100% successful in this pursuit, but dammit! I am trying. I hope everyone I have ever encountered in this world understands the following words:
Neil Peart said it best. "If you choose not to decide / you still have made a choice." Take 5:24 to listen to his lyrics & his amazing drumming on "Freewill," the Rush tune I would place in my Top 10 Rush Tunes.
These lyrics speak to me in a way I even don't fully understand.
Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life.
