Forever the Princess

Today, December 29th, 2016, is the two year anniversary of Mom's passing.

And today, on that anniversary, another family is dealing with the pain of losing a loved one. For one family, it doesn't really matter that the two women who passed away were Hollywood icons. I can only imagine the pain for Fisher's family must be intense. Carrie Fisher passed away on December 27th at age 60 and, one day later, Debbie Reynolds, her mother, passed away the next at age 84.

I'm not trying to be insensitive, but on-screen, I don't know what the Star Wars franchise does now, with 2 of the 6 core members of the "heroes" no longer available. They are left now with Chewbaaca, Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, and C-3PO. Sure, the franchise is about the Skywalker family, but Luke's role in Episode VII amounted to a cameo at the end of the movie. I'm fairly certain Princess Leia is in "Star Wars VIII," which has already wrapped up shooting for its December 15, 2017, release.

I had considered not including the above paragraph in the same post as "announcing" the death of Fisher and Reynolds until I saw how, in this day and age of being politically correct, it seems as though others are being equally insensitive. I do recall seeing Steve Martin and Carrie Fisher together over the years and, after posting a tribute to his friend, Martin has taken a bullet for this tweet:

"When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well,"

Martin, 71, then deleted the tweet but not before others saw it. One reaction was this:

"Seriously @SteveMartinToGo quit being such a jerk for thinking Carrie Fisher was beautiful and saying so on the occasion of her death."

Martin quickly deleted the message and declined to pen another post about the late actress.

I'll pass on discussing whether Martin's comment is sexist (it's not) and let the world mourn.

All Kinds of Good & Evil

I really don't know how anyone can give the new tune by Green Day a 'thumbs down' because I really REALLY love it, after only two complete listens, both this AM, when I got up to go to work:
I am a picky eater & I don't eat the type of foods I should. I drink too much Mountain Dew, I had pepperoni pizza for supper last night and brought the leftovers for lunch today. Veggies and fruits are rarely in my system, though I will eat applesauce & bananas on occasion. Thus, if I were in high school now - it has been 28 years since I graduated! - there is no way any person would be able to as this article suggests "teach students to ‘nudge’ others into healthy eating." It would take a monster truck to nudge me.

Speaking of movies - yes, no one was but bear with me - I realize that Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens has been out for 280 days (9 months, 5 days) but that does not mean my enthusiasm for it has waned. That's why I found myself sitting on the couch, engrossed in this long (45 minutes!) video about all the references in the movie.
We subscribe to Netflix and October looks to be a busy month with lots of things happening: Netflix.

Here's a new tidbit of information about me - I talked to Max Calavera on the phone in 1998 even though I don't remember much about the conversation. I mention it only because I was thinking about their release Roots and how I really enjoy the percussion / drumming by Max's brother on it.
A headline like this

is the kind of headline that promises "scandal" or "controversy" but it turns out this judge said what he said and no one that was interviewed for the article said they knew of any anti-gay bias. Read it here.

Skip the Mess? NEVER!

Just for the record, I really do want to go to the B v S movie in the theater. I would like to have a double feature on a Saturday of:

Star Wars VII at the Collins Road Theater
B v S at the regular theater.

That would be awesome for me and absolutely Karen's worst nightmare! Alex is probably not up for this idea either. Maybe I start going to movies by myself...

Complete Is The Circle

This is a touching article about how valuable the Star Wars franchise has been to the author. There are no spoilers about Episode VII, which I saw last night with Karen, Alex, Megan, and Cody, in the article as it is a reprint of an article that was published in 2005. Here's the link.

That said, I am not going to write a review of the movie on this blog because I am a coward - I don't want responsibility for spoiling anyone's experience of seeing the movie if they don't want to know what happens. I will be generic and use long flowing statements to capture my opinion of the movie.

Five reactions:

I never wanted to blink during the movie. Similar to Leonard, Howard, and Raj in the episode of "The Big Bang Theory" that aired on 12/17/2015, I didn't get any pop or food because, frankly, I didn't want to have to go to the bathroom during the movie. It's that simple.
Prior to the release, there was a lot of apprehension voiced on various websites about JJ Abrams and Disney likely releasing a move that would ruin the franchise. I admit to the same fears, but I can generically say, this movie didn't ruin the franchise.
This movie is much like a love poem, in some aspects, to those Star Wars fans who grew up watching the movies. In 1977, I was in first grade. David Davis lived across the street from me on Red Bud Road in Cedar Rapids and he worked at the Plaza Theater by Lindale Mall. He had a dresser full of comic books and he was my idol.
Karen was a trooper to go with us. She and I watched all of Episode IV and part of VI on Saturday to brush up on her knowledge. As we watched those films, I would pause the movie and tell her things that were important and catch phrases that were said by multiple characters in the original trilogy, like "I've got a bad feeling about this." I gave her a brief synopsis of "The Empire Strikes Back" because we did so much Christmas shopping on Saturday, we simply ran out of time. I also was very conscious of not ruining the franchise for her by cramming a lot of information into her brain. I want her to like the franchise and avoid negative feelings about it.
I will go see it again. I don't necessarily think I need to see it in 3D, though I can see where that would be very cool.

I fear if I write more I will write too much.

Remembering Episode III

Several years ago, prior to "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" was released in theaters, I purchased the novel at Wal-Mart. I had a history of reading the novelization of movies in this franchise prior to seeing the movie. I remember after "The Empire Strikes Back" was released, I was sick and couldn't go to see it with my dad and brother. I had read the book and started asking detailed questions about what I had read in the novel and how they were portrayed in the movie. I don't recall neither my father nor my brother providing extensive answers, more or less not answering my specific questions. It was their way of telling me 'You have to just go see it to find out the differences between the novel and movie.'

Fast forward to 2015 and "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" being released on 12/18/2015 - a week from tomorrow. I had the thought to look online to see if I could purchase an eBook of the novel or to find out if a hard-copy version was already available at Barnes & Noble - it would be a great Christmas present. Thus, I was saddened to read the novelization is not being released until the day the movie is released, as described in this article.

I fully understand why the novel is not being released prior to the movie in 2015. There wasn't widespread use of the Internet when "Empire" was released and certainly, by 2002, the Internet existed, but I don't recall it being used for providing spoilers for upcoming movies like it is now. In a sense, it's the same principle as why Lars Ulrich went after Napster - it was the release of their art in a way that wasn't under their control. so, sure, after working so hard on a movie, I understand why releasing the book early would be detrimental. That doesn't mean there won't be posts on websites when a new Chinese trailer with previously unseen footage, as described on this page. There's posts on websites when new images are posted, as described on this page. Now is also the era where fear drives creativity to new levels.

At the end of the day, not releasing the novelization ahead of time is a good move. It's an attempt to return fans of the original trilogy to the movie theater, especially if those fans were critical of the second trilogy (I - III). It's all about building excitement about the franchise as a new chapter of the story is told.

Only 44 Days Until the Movie Opens and the Fangs of the Haters are Sharpening

This is a ridiculous and condescending segment. Star Wars, to me, is like any franchise. You either like it and spout on and on about how great it is or you don't like it and can't even speak intelligently about the contents and sound like an idiot.

The hosts of this segment are idiots.

Another way to think of it is that I have never seen a single "Fast & Furious" movie. Thus, I don't have a qualified opinion as to whether it is a good or bad franchise. That means, if I'm talking to someone about the franchise, I say, "I haven't seen any of the movies so I don't have an informed opinion." I'll listen to the details of the franchise, but I won't call it dumb or use any negative words about it because I don't know if I like it or hate it.

In the same breath, I've filled up blog posts about my favorite movie franchises - Star Wars, Lethal Weapon, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Back to the Future, probably others I can't think of at the moment. I can speak intelligently about these franchises and offer an opinion about the merits of each franchise.

The Fox hosts needed to be neutral about Star Wars and listen to the guest's opinion about why it is a good franchise to him. Personally, I feel bad for the guest as, essentially, he's trying to explain heavy metal music to a music fan who believes that the decline of civilization began with Elvis Presley.

New Trailer

Every person that has ever proclaimed their love for the Star Wars franchise received an early Christmas present on Monday with the release of the third and final trailer for episode VII. It is now only 1 month, 3 weeks, 6 days or 58 total days, until the movie's release. The Internet is figuratively on fire as the trailer is analyzed for Easter eggs and clues as to what the plot of the movie is, who's going to die, and who's going to live through the remaining films in the franchise.

Unfortunately, this also means that those whose opinion is not based in reality are drawing comparisons between the Star Wars galaxy & our galaxy, as discussed in this column. People that think there is racism in the Star Wars galaxy are clueless.

As for me, without blowing it all out of proportion, I am excited about the new movie. There is a book sale here at work and in the cafeteria, there is a hugely thick "Star Wars" book that can be mine for the price of $29.20 (27% off of the $40 list price). Of course, next to it is a hugely thick "Marvel Comics" book that can be mine for $28 (30% off of the $40 list price). It's been so tempting to figure out a way to purchase both books so that I may wallow in the depths of the knowledge that is contained in each! And both for under $60!

I should purchase both and give them to myself as an early birthday present as my birthday is only 1 month, 1 week, 6 days, or 44 days away.

I have been paying attention to the upcoming Star Wars VII movie as well as the Batman v. Superman movie. Meh

After reading the first few pages of "Aftermath" on the Entertainment Weekly website, I'm unimpressed with the writing style. I didn't begin reading the published words from the novel that provides the missing pieces in the Star Wars Universe between "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens" to be grand literature. I purposely set aside my tendency to be snobby when I read writing. As a former English major, sometimes it's difficult to do and sometimes I fail, but I don't think it was even a factor as I read the words. The writing style is so choppy, so void of details about what the speaker sees, hears, and touches. In science fiction writing, especially the Star Wars Universe, details are the essence of what causes debates among fans of the film series and the novels that have been published over the years concerning the characters that are also in the films as well as characters that are only in the novels. My purpose is to not go into depth about what I read because there's no specific paragraph or collection of paragraphs that gave me this impression. Go read it yourself.
