Soothing the Doug

Doug posted on a Facebook group comprised of Metallica fans.

Content Warning! Now that Spotify is going to add a "Content Warning" to podcasts that discuss COVID-19, I feel like I should have one of those for when I quote someone else who obviously didn't know that there is a language standard on this blog.

If I replace the f-word with f--k, is that really necessary anyone? We know what f--k means?!?

Still, just for the record, Doug used adult language at least once in his post. Be advised.

Metallica actually sold out when they bent over and spread their ass for MTV on the ONE video. But I didn’t think much of it because although the lack of bass sucks, AJFA is a kick ass thrash album. Then they sold their ass out to the entire radio world with the black album. I remember it SO well… all of the sudden you’d hear Metallica playing everywhere you went and you’d hear grandmas saying, “oh I love this song!” So yes, whether you like it or not, Metallica are nothing short of a bunch of sellout snots. So in essence what I’m saying is, fuck everything Metallica did after AJFA, although I actually do enjoy some of their last two albums. So, if you want to get on your knees for James and Lars and worship everything they have put out… then knock yourself out bud. It’s just not for me.

As you might imagine, Metallica fans didn't really care for Doug's post. However, instead of insulting Doug for having a different opinion than I and other Metallica fans, I wrote the following:

Doug I get it - you want to protect Metallica from being known by the masses. I will say this: if Enter Sandman hadn't been released, I don't know what Metallica tune would have been played at my wedding reception in 8-1993. The dance floor was full! And, later in life, I was able to introduce my kids to Metallica when they were little, which led to taking my son to see Metallica in June 2017. AJFA is my favorite album so I was representing that day!!

On a side note, James Hetfield deciding to confront his alcohol use is positive reinforcement for me as I quit drinking booze on 12-31-2010.

Lars Ulrich deciding to go and achieve his goals and to ignore any negative reactions is positive reinforcement as well. I have heard him talk about how he never wanted to be the ultimate drummer in the world, that he was going to give 100% to his goal of being the drummer in a band. I also think he was correct about Napster and while I didn't like it, I give him kudos for recording Lulu with Lou Reed.

Kirk Hammett being able to give everything he has done for all the years in the band, including swallowing the lack of guitar solos on St Anger, only to shred on DM and HW2SD is inspiring. He went through a tough time and decided to make the best of it and NOT QUIT the band.

Robert? The dude is a cool guy who wants the best for his bandmates. He's talented and has laid down some killer stuff on DM and HW2SD.

So, as a 52 year old Metallica fan, I accept your grievances with the band and I hope that the power of Metallica’s music brings you back someday.

Peace

Doug's Response:

very well said bro, and much respect.

I'll Just Say It

On 1-20-2022, I had a job interview. I was intentionally cryptic a few weeks back about it, but now that it's been a week and a day, I'll just say it so I don't have to keep saying it.

Editor's Note: Update on 2-3-2022 -- I just found out that I didn't get the job.

On the morning of the interview, my friend BSS texted me "Good luck" and I wrote back, saying that I just wanted to get in front of the interview panel and show them what I can do. BSS wrote back, saying to relax and listen to some Supafuzz.

Prior to this post, the word "Supafuzz" only appeared in one other post, which is here: https://prhmusic.blogspot.com/2019/07/big-dogs-returning.html

This is a band from Lexington, KY, who became popular in eastern Iowa when Rock 108 began playing their "I Am the King" tune. After BSS mentioned Supafuzz, I found this video and it made me as ready as I ended up being for my interview.

Not Going to Cadot

Just to erase any doubt, no, I'm not going to Cadott, WI, from July 14-16, 2022. Instead, on July 15, I am going to Cedar Rapids, with Karen, to see Mama Mia on the stage. The tickets for MM was my Christmas gift to Karen.

Trash and Cookies, Cookies and Trash

For decades and decades, I have dealt with Cookies1 and the Recycle Bin2 when using a computer. Yet, until I saw this comic, I never associated Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch with my use of a computer. It was one of those "of course!" moments when my friend Matthew shared the comic on his Facebook page.

How to Clean Up a MP3 Mess

I'm still mucking around with my music files from the CD to MP3 project I began on 6-5-2016. It's unreal. I have so many messed up file names. For example,
  • 03_Touché [Acoustic]-Acoustic_Godsmack_The Other Side.wma
  • 03_Touché [Acoustic]_Godsmack_The Other Side_Stragglers.wma
  • 03_Touché_Godsmack_The Other Side_Stragglers.wma

The problem? I want one file named the following:

  • 03_Touche-Acoustic_Godsmack_The Other Side_40000.wma

My issues are as follows:

  1. I don't want the é in the file name
  2. I don't want the brackets
  3. I want to use a dash to separate any information, such as if it's a live version of the tune or, in this case, if it's an acoustic version of the tune.
  4. I don't want the word "Acoustic" both in and outside of the brackets
  5. I don't want the _Stragglers at the end
  6. I use the naming convention: TT_TI_AR_AL_CO
    1. where
      1. TT = Track Number
      2. TI = Title
      3. AR = Artist
      4. AL = Album
      5. CO = Composer
        1. I actually use the "Composer" property to store the location. Where I want to end up is to have
          1. either 10NN_Spindle, to indicate the numbered spindle the physical CD is located on
        2. or
          1.  40000
        3. 40000

But I also have junk like this to deal with:

  • 23_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone Live_Michael Nichols_Home Alive-The Art of Self Defense Disc 1_1053_Spindle.mp3
  • 23_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone [Live]_Michael Nichols_Home Alive The Art of Self Defense Disc 1_1053_Spindle.mp3
  • 23_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone [Live]_Michael Nichols_Home Alive- The Art of Self Defense Disc 1_1053_Spindle.mp3
  • 23_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone [Live_Michael Nichols_Home Alive-The Art of Self Defense Disc 1_1053_Spindle.mp3
  • 22_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone-Live_Michael Nichols_Home Alive-The Art of Self Defense Disc 1_1053_Spindle.mp3
  • 23_Sensitive_Guys_Don't_Go_Home_Alone_[Live]_Michael_Nichols_Home_Alive_The_Art_of_Self_Defense_Disc_1_1053_Spindle.mp3

There's spaces, brackets, and underscores. What I really want is the following:

23_Sensitive Guys Don't Go Home Alone-Live_Michael Nichols_Home Alive The Art of Self-Defense-Disc-1_1053_Spindle.mp3

Additionally, there are several files which lack a track number, an artist, the album, and the Composer tag at the end. Many of those files do not include that information within the properties of the file. For example, what artist and album should be in the file name?, such as this: [Your Love Keeps Lifting Me] Higher and Higher [A Tribute to Jackie Wilson].mp3

All of that leads me back to a macro I have used in the past. The purpose of the macro is to identify the unique strings and provide a count. However, it ignores numbers so I will need to create some sort of masking to replace numbers, underscores, and dashes with a letter in order to use the macro that is described more fully than what I wrote in this post on this page: https://wordribbon.tips.net/T010761_Generating_a_Count_of_Word_Occurrences.html.
