- From a local review: "KISS vowed to bring down the roof of the Five Seasons Center, and a small fire in the rafters at the end of last night's three-hour show made concert goers wonder if it would do just that. The spectacle gave a new twist to the lyrics 'Heaven's on Fire' that dominate one of the band's more popular songs. The flames were quickly extinguished, and a cheer went up from the curious crowd of 6,000. Arena officials said it initially appeared a cloth ignited, and Fire Department personnel on hand for the event were still investigating. Small wonder. The show was loaded with pyrotechnics, including bombs and a shower of fireworks from the crown of a garish Statue of Liberty dominating the 80-foot stage.

Garish is the hallmark of KISS. From shock rock to schlock rock and back again, the venerable foursome has returned to the roots that carved a hard niche in rock history... Even without the makeup, Gene Simmons is still rather garish. His clothes are too tight, his tongue too long and lascivious, and he's looking old. The years have been kinder to Paul Stanley, who fronts most of the songs, and is still fun to watch as he cavorts across the stage. New to the band is drummer Eric Singer, who joined this year in the wake of Eric Carr, who died of cancer. Singer is the only blond among the men whose favorite color is black. Does he stand out in the crowd? Only with his relentless rhythms, eloquently showcased in an extended solo punctuated with lasers. Stanley really cooked on blazing guitar riffs during 'Hotter than Hell.' Unfortunately, the quiet one, guitarist Bruce Kulick, never had the chance to strut his stuff in the spotlight" (Cedar Rapids Gazette, 11/16/92).

Getting Ready for Tomorrow

From reading https://www.fandom.com/articles/the-batman-main-players, I now know that the long-awaited "The Batman" movie is being released today in Austrailia on 3-3-2022, which means, of course, that on Tuesday, 3-22-2022, I plan to be at the Coral Ridge Mall Theaters watching the movie. I go to movies on Tuesdays because a ticket is $5.00 and I have plans on Tuesdays until then.

• 3-15-2022--Would like to see Papa Roach - Bad Wolves - Third band - at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids - though I don't have a ticket for this concert. I've seen Papa Roach several times in concert previously and they always put on a great show... hmmm

Lyz Lenz was a columnist who wrote opinion articles for the Cedar Rapids Gazette newspaper. Until she was fired... I disagreed with her political slant - extreme Liberal is how I would label her. When I read a Liberal column - for example, by Leonard Pitts Jr. - I will use Scotch tape to keep it in my 10 Year Journal project because good writing is good writing. Lenz? I put used Scotch tape to keep her articles in my 10 Year Journal project because reading bad writing is a reminder to me what NOT to do. This is her blog: https://lyz.substack.com. Another CR-based Business Closes

I feel very lucky today. Not only am I alive, I do not work at FusionFarm in Cedar Rapids, which is great because it is going to close. From the CBJ:

Cedar Rapids-based Fusionfarm to close later this year

Cedar Rapids-based Folience has decided to close Fusionfarm, the marketing agency it created seven years ago.

In an announcement that Fusionfarm would shut its doors later this year, Folience CEO Daniel Goldstein, who leads the ESOP-owned holding company, said that while the agency has excelled at producing high-quality, award-winning work, “the business model for Fusionfarm just was not economically sustainable.”

Mr. Goldstein declined to elaborate on issues with that business model, saying only that the decision was not made before considerable efforts to address them. Fusionfarm, led by Kelly Homewood and Michael Zydzik, was one of Folience’s first efforts to diversify beyond the company’s roots in the newspaper and television industries as the digital transformation shifted the media landscape.

If its financial performance was not up to expectations, Fusionfarm’s work for clients drew ample recognition. The agency, which employed 13, recently won its third Midwest Emmy for its edgy “Downtown Cedar Rapids Sucks” campaign. The firm was also recently invited by AdAge to pitch to consumer giant Procter & Gamble, and was named as the Best PR/Creative Agency, Photographer/Videographer, and Website/App Developer in the Corridor this summer by CBJ readers.

The news followed layoffs last month that affected 25 employees at Folience’s Color Web Printers, and the departure this month of Steve Lorenz, a company veteran who oversaw sales as print product manager at the company’s Gazette Communications business.

Mr. Goldstein said the layoff, the departure and the closing decision are unrelated, and don’t reflect problems at the ESOP-owned holding company. He said the decision to close Fusionfarm was difficult and doesn’t reflect on the efforts of the team.

“As businesses develop and succeed there can be necessary actions that are difficult, no matter how necessary,” Mr. Goldstein said. “Folience continues on a trajectory of growth and increased profitability.”

While declining comment on the circumstances of Mr. Lorenz’ departure, Mr. Goldstein said Gazette Communications is expected to announce a replacement and continue its three-leader model. Fusionfarm will work with clients in a variety of ways to ensure their needs are met as it winds down operations, he added.

Honeywell to close Cedar Rapids operation

Honeywell International plans to close the downtown Cedar Rapids facility where it performs engineering, technical support and sales support for its Safety and Productivity Solutions Business at the end of the year.

Honeywell spokesman Eric Krantz said the work is being moved to other Honeywell offices performing similar tasks, and that less than two dozen local employees will be affected.

"Honeywell's Safety and Productivity Solutions business is streamlining operations and adjusting our workforce to better serve business needs," Mr. Krantz said in an emailed statement. "This isn't a decision we made lightly, and we realize, unfortunately, affects some of our valued employees."

Employees affected by the move have been offered severance and outplacement assistance under Honeywell policy, and are also being encouraged to apply for other roles within the company.

Mr. Krantz said Honeywell's lease at the downtown building expires at the end of the year.

The operation is a remnant of an Intermec Corp. business that employed about 250 in Cedar Rapids when it was acquired by Honeywell about seven years ago. Intermec designed electronic manufacturing products for inventory and supply chain management.

Employment has dwindled at the facility since that time, however. Mr. Krantz said the company does not disclose specific employment counts at its locations.

Ending the 4th

1. Local radio host will eat horse poop... wow, what a teaser!
2. The Bill Cosby verdict was a victory... how in the hell can a man spending his last years in prison be a victory for anyone?!?
3. Each year, the same 10 countries top ... is it me or does this teaser make me want to NOT read about the darker reality?
4. The Chicago Bears picked an Iowa Hawkeye football player in the NFL draft.
5. Restart the I-380 cameras have been controversial since they were put up. I got a speeding ticket because of it. I support having the I-380 cameras. I said, just last night, that having the cameras allows the police to do other things. Plus, I really like the idea of a non-tax revenue source for funding.
6. As if Bill Cosby going to prison and spending his last days in prison wasn't enough of a downfall, Cosby's beloved Temple University is stripping away an honorary degree from his legacy.

All that explained, it's now Monday, April 30, 2018, at 6:21 AM. Time to get to work! I just kicked off my DOS batch file to back up my RoboHelp projects for Knowledge Management and disaster recovery.
