Revisionist History is Here

In my mind, James LoMenzo is likely more famous for playing bass in White Lion than he is for playing in Megadeth. Is White Lion is being shunned to establish credibility? I'm not sure. Anyways, there's a new project with LoMenzo and Chris Adler and here's more information to review: Former Megadeth and Lamb Of God Stars Form New Project

What LOG Sounds Like

And, just as a reminder, this is what Lamb of God sound like. I think this is one of my favorite tunes:

This is an instrumental version from the Modern Drummer Festival 2005. Yes, I've embedded this elsewhere on this blog but it is SO awesome, I don't give a shit. <grin>

This is the full band version, with lyrics below:

Hourglass
Track 02 of Lamb of God's 2004 album, "Ashes of The Wake".

Lyrics:

Privileged, a chosen few
Blessed with our time in hell
Witness a divine vision, the day we all fell still.
Rapture of the dying age, a shattered hourglass
Wrath of the warring gods and soon this too shall pass.

It's only getting worse, not worth a moment's regret
Each dawn another curse, every breath a twisting blade
What will be left behind in the ashes of the wake?
An ill wind blows this way, the edge of the envelope burns
Forbearance and my vengance, payment for your intent
Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace.

(Fear and death in the wings, in thrall of those fallen from grace
Petty is as petty does, witness the mass disgrace.)
God forbid you read the signs.
Watch for meaning between the lines
Gehenna has now arrived, no hindsight for the blind.
Your trust has been misplaced, believed the lies told to your face
Became another casualty and now it's too late.

You finally made it home,
Draped in the flag that you fell for.
And so it goes
The ashes of the wake.

It's only getting worse
It's only getting worse
It's only getting worse
It's only getting worse
It's only getting worse

Painting by Numbers would be Awful... NOT!

The curse of seeing both sides to a situation raised its ugly head. In the article below, Chris Adler is quoted as saying that "being trapped in a "creative" formula and/or playing the same song 10,000 times did not bolster my love of playing. I’m never been one to “phone it in." I’d rather mow the grass.

I met Chris Adler (Lamb Of God): The Interview in Cedar Rapids, IA, in March 2007. He was a great guy. I felt comfortable talking to him.

I do have a question. When Adler says "playing the same song 10,000 times did not bolster my love of playing," I wonder if he was under the impression that he would never play a popular song 10,000 times. Think about it this way. Metallica will never play a concert for the rest of their career without "Enter Sandman." Setlist.fm says Metallica has played "Enter Sandman" 1351 times. Metallica would have to play 8649 more concerts to play to reach the plateau of playing "Enter Sandman" 10,000 times. The tune has been around 28 years. I hate math, but I love a good challenge. I took 10000 / 1391, which is 7.1890726096, which means it will take 201.2940330697 years to play "Enter Sandman" 10,000 times. That's actually more of a question than a statement.

To do the fuzzy math yourself, read the article.

LOG Goes to Europe and CA Isn't

When I saw that LAMB OF GOD Announce U.K. & European Tour with KREATOR, POWER TRIP, I thought about Chris Adler which, then, made me think about his appearance at the 2005 Modern Drummer Festival, which is the DVD on which I first heard of Lamb of God.

To this day, I contend that if Lamb of God were to release instrumental versions of their tunes, it would be a true treat for me to listen. Until then, I can salivate as I listen to Chris Adler slay the drums:

BtP Opens New Doors

Ministry is not a band I'm familiar with whatsoever. I'm aware they existed - they could be broken up or together, I don't know without looking at wikipedia - so hearing Burn the Priest cover their tune gave me reason to listen to this tune. Prior to changing their name to Lamb of God, Burn the Priest is what they called themselves.

That's a decent tune.

When I think about Chris Adler, Lamb of God's drummer, I think nothing but positive thoughts. I interviewed Chris Adler prior to Lamb of God's gig in Cedar Rapids, IA, nearly a decade ago and, as a person, as a drummer, I will never say anything negative about him. While I respect the musical abilities of the other members of Lamb of God, I am just not a huge fan of Randy Blythe's vocals. I know the band caught some flack when they released a tune with "clean vocals" but my gosh, I don't like his vocals!

Call me old school, but I would really enjoy learning what he's singing about! I know they can do better - I've heard really good vocals in "The Duke" and cannot accept the screaming another moment!

Editor's Note: The label for "Ministry" was added because of this post.

Two Pluses

First, the guy is playing a clear drum set (though he is docked for it being a Sonar set instead of a Ludwig Vistalite) and second, the groove is seriously interesting.

Killer chops that make me want to go play the drums in my Ideal Band! And it's not just the fact that he has on a tie!

There are so many drummers from which I glean inspiration.

Firing up the Lars Lashings with the bold-italic last sentence in the article

From this article - Lars Ulrich: Who I Would Choose to Replace Me in Metallica While we're at it - who do you think would be the best choice? - comes a very broad invitation for the Internet trolls who bash Lars Ulrich's drumming to creep out of the corners of the Internet and into the broad daylight:

Mr. Lars Ulrich was asked by 98 Rock to single out the drummer he would choose to replace him in Metallica if he had to, to which he replied (via Blabbermouth):
"If I could pick it, if I could hear somebody drum behind Hetfield's riffs, I'd take [classic AC/DC drummer] Phil Rudd.
"He's been probably my main, biggest source of inspiration when we did the turnaway from the super-progressive stuff, the crazy stuff after 'Justice,' when we got into the 'Black Album' and the 'Load' stuff, when it got a little more about the bounce and the riffs and the feel and the groove and all that.
"Phil Rudd, he's the top of that pyramid. Hearing Phil Rudd play behind James, that'd be pretty cool."
While we're at it - who do you think would be a good replacement for Lars?

Personally, I would choose Chris Adler - Lamb of God - as Ulrich's replacement. I think he is really a phenomenal drummer, he's grounded in reality and seems like a fantastic all-around person. I realize arguments could be made for the following drummers:
  1. Charlie Benante - Anthrax
  2. Dave Lombardo - Suicidal Tendencies (and others)
  3. Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater (and others)
  4. Gene Hoglan - Testament (and others)
My hope is that there is not a day when Ulrich has to be replaced.

Satisfied with a Glass Ceiling

Chris Adler continues to impress me when I read what he thinks about heavy metal. This interview is a prime example. He realizes that Lamb of God is not going to get on Rock 108 or other mainstream rock stations and he's okay with remaining where the band is, though I'm not quite sure I agree with his assessment. There was a time when Rock 108 would never EVER play
  • a Motorhead tune and yet, I heard "Ace of Spades" the other day
  • a Metallica tune from their first 3 releases and yet, I hear "Seek & Destroy," "Creeping Death," and "(Welcome Home) Sanitarium" on a fairly regular basis
It's certainly possible that there will be a day when bands like Lamb of God are deemed acceptable, just as early Metallica tunes have been deemed acceptable. I can't wait to hear "Redneck" on Rock 108.

CHRIS ADLER

OH! How I wish I was going to Des Moines to see them on my birthday this year! This is my favorite song on their last release.

So much too few moments

Where did this week go?

Baseball, softball, ER season finale (just who really was in the ambulance that blew - Pratt or Sam?), Lost, Grey's Anatomy, baseball, softball... where does the time go?

Big news is that I bought tickets for Rush for Tuesday night. I didn't know this, but they have a new live 2 CD release. Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snakes_&_Arrows_Tour

In other news, Lamb of God's drummer Chris Adler is going to be writing a monthly column for Modern Drummer. I used to subscribe to MD but it has been years since I bought an issue cover to cover - at least 15 years, closer to 20.

At work, I have been working hard. There is a lot of work to do and I am trying my best to put my head above water. One reason that makes my life difficult is the virtual machine I have been using since late March. It is not working for me. I wrote this email to my cool manager that summarizes my issues and removed references to my company:

The problem is that the Virtual Machine session of my old PC doesn't perform adequately. I discovered yet another issue today: the inability to paste formatted text when it is copied in Internet Explorer (IE) and pasted into Word.

My workflow has been to always write documentation in Dreamweaver (DW), preview the text in Internet Explorer (IE) and then paste into Word. I have used this workflow for nearly 2 years on my Windows 2000 (W2K) PC. This workflow worked without any issues when I was using a non-virtual PC. I developed this workflow because it is faster to work DW ==> IE ==> Word than it is to work Word --> DW. I experimented with both workflows while developing the most efficient way in which to write documentation.

Here's a specific example:

I write this text in my HTML file:
The Word_01 Word_02 system option is available.

I preview the page in IE. I select the above text and press Ctrl+C to copy the text.

I navigate to Word 2003 and press Ctrl+V. I get this:
The Word_01 Word_02 system option is available.

In other words, my bolded text doesn't carry the formatting from the IE text.

The impact of this issue is that I then have to manually highlight text and format it as bold. There is no macro or automated way to do this. This adds time. For lengthy passages, it might make sense to copy a sentence at a time but this is not a long-term - definitely NOT permanent - solution. It is a [...] standard to bold names of menu options, system options & system values so that they stand out. Not bolding these items would make the documentation confusing to read as all the names would be title case but they wouldn't stand out. Bolding these items is a common and accepted practice among most technical writers.

I tested to see if this could be reproduced on my Vista machine. No, it cannot. I can select formatted text in IE 7, copy it to my clipboard and then paste it into Word 2007. The text will be copied as formatted text, working as I expect.

In conclusion, the inability to paste formatted text is yet another issue with using a virtual machine. This issue joins the list with 1) general slowness of the virtual machine, 2) the inability to scroll in any applications, and 3) the unstable PDF creation. I know that these issues did not exist on my non-virtual PC session. I am confident that they will not exist on my Vista PC. These issues would be resolved if [we] obtained the new versions of the software - RoboHelp, Dreamweaver, SnagIT, Adobe Acrobat - so that I can migrate from the Virtual PC to my non-virtual Vista PC.

To my manager's credit, she is working very very hard to get this squared away so that I can move along.

And... if you got through all that, you should be rewarded so here you go. Def Leppard, Everclear, Night Ranger, Cinderella, Warrant, and 38 Special are playing at the Iowa State Fair this year: http://www.iowastatefair.com/entertainment/mediaPlayer/grandstand.php

I just learned that Disarray is still around and kicking. They are one of my favorite bands. I am hoping to get a review copy of their latest CD to review for DV.

We are going out of town this weekend so don't bother checking this site again until Sunday PM - and even then, it'll depend upon how tired I am. We are going to pick up our camper tomorrow night, then driving to Balltown. On Saturday, we're going to 4 PM Mass and then to the casino in Dubuque. On Sunday is a birthday party for my niece and nephew. Then we return home to North Liberty and park the camper next to the house - hopefully before the finale of Extreme Makeover and Desperate Housewives!

Take it easy or any way you can get it.
