Good for AW

While I like this article, I'm not used to seeing a person's first name in the title.

Typically it would be With UI Sports Medicine at his side, WickAlec recovers from a bad hip injury and wins a state football title

Whether Alec or Wick is correct, I like that the athlete was successful:   With UI Sports Medicine at his side, Alec recovers from a bad hip injury and wins a state football title

About my Post-C-19 World Part II

After only exchanging text messages and scattered phone calls for over a year, I finally saw BSS, my friend who I met when we both worked at Quintrex, at the Tin Roost in North Liberty. The Tin Roost was rocking. Not only was "Flash in the Pan" playing on the patio, it seemed like it was a pure party. In addition to BSS, I talked to:

  1. Fred & Julie
  2. the Kleinows
  3. too many acquaintances and friends from church and from Regina to list individually
  4. Megan

Yes, even Megan, my daughter, was at the Tin Roost.

One Down, One to Go

This is the relevant part of an article in the Iowa City Press-Citizen about the State Championship football games today. As of now (almost 3 PM), the Regina game is over & Regina lost. The Iowa City West game is tonight at 7 PM.

The paper predicted a Regina loss and were correct. Will it be correct about the Iowa City West game as well?

Kinda Funny

http://www.thegazette.com/iowa-city-regina-pulls-away-from-upset-minded-sigourney-keota-20160917

The two kids mentioned by name thought that they were the gift to Regina athletics way back when Alex attended Regina. They thought their feces had no odor.

Dominance

Boring.

It's the kind of problem that's good. The Iowa City West boy's basketball team defeated Xavier the other night and, despite the typo (as of 2/5/2015, "DiLeo is the team’s leading 3-point shooter, as he demonstrated by popping in three treys with in a 2:25 stretch of the third quarter Tuesday."), it summarizes the problem nicely: "The Trojans are vying for their fourth-straight Class 4A state-title, a feat no team has pulled off. They are 91-3 since the start of that run."

There's a feeling in the air and it's not excitement. It's the same type of feeling that was in the air when the kids were at Iowa City Regina and we'd go to a football game. Both the Regina football team and the West boy's basketball team step into competition with the expectation of their fans that they will win.

A quick side note regarding Iowa City football, in general. Per an Iowa City Press-Citizen article, the Iowa City West football program is seeking a new head coach. I wonder which other local high school coach in Iowa City would be interested in taking that job. Maybe someone who has led a fantastic program at a small Catholic school and feels the need to advance to a bigger playing field. Hmmm.

Back to the West high school boy's basketball season, I think that because there is no doubt in anyone's mind, there's the potential for an outcome that is not expected. While most people familiar with the area would possibly state that West will dominate and easily win, I think that at any point in time, the wheels can come off the train. I will go out on a limb and say, well, the West boy's team could lose. When crosstown rival Iowa City High comes to West for a doubleheader of the boys / girls on Friday, February 13th, there's no pep band scheduled to play. A crosstown rival comes into your gym and you don't have the pep band to help make your  gym that much more intimidating? Really? Would you not feel the need to make a home gym more intimidating if you thought there was a chance that you could lose? No pep band = no chance on losing seems to be the message.

Despite talent, despite hard work during practice, despite all the other factors that go into preparing for an athletic competition, the way that the actual game / competition will end is never a given. Case in point, the men's basketball team from Wichita State, who were riding a long win streak, came into Cedar Falls to play UNI and got stomped by 20ish points. Did anyone predict that? Of course not. Thus, my mind has already wondered if West is now a Wichita State and City is now a UNI.

Whenever kids and athletics comes up, I use the analogy of a funnel. When you're young, it used to be that you could play any sport you wanted in some recreational league. When I was young, kids played every sport - baseball, basketball, football, track -  because they didn't have to specialize. Everyone played. Then, in junior high, the funnel narrows and those kids that aren't the best athletes or those kids that aren't going to work hard at their sport don't go out. Then, in high school, the funnel narrows yet again.

And while I mentioned Regina, I just have to mention one little tidbit. Years ago, when Alex attended school there, a group of boys thought they were the best basketball players in the world. They assembled a basketball team and actually pillaged the team I was helping to coach and took two of our best players. There were ill feelings - very non-Catholic - between those boys and the boys on the basketball team that Alex played on. Those boys on the other team walked around in elementary school like they were the chosen ones to play varsity basketball for Regina in high school. The other day, the boy's team played Cascade at Regina. Cascade walked into the Regina gym and defeated Regina. Regina has had an impressive year, but by being defeated, it showed they are "just" high school basketball players and that, as I mentioned above, the outcome of a game is never known until the game is played and the athletes compete. Perhaps another reason the 2/13/15 City v. West contest shouldn't be an assumed victory.

My point is that these boys who thought they were king of the world, who thought their feces didn't have an odor, that acted as if they were the chosen ones. Reality paints a different picture. According to the player statistics in the newspaper, none of them are playing. Regina played 6 kids in the game against Cascade and none of them were these kids that thought they were so special. My intention is not to gloat about how these kids aren't playing as much as they thought they should. Rather, my intention is to rededicate myself to the idea that just because you repeat something or just because every one you speak to tells you the same statements does NOT mean it is true. The way these kids walked around sickened me. Sometimes, it felt like a flashback to my own days as an elementary student when the "cool" kids walked around like they were totally awesome at basketball. When those kids got to junior high, not all of them were playing on the A team and by the time those kids got to high school, I can't think of a one of them that played on the varsity team. Sure, some did time on the junior varsity, but they weren't the kings of the world.

Unfortunately, I didn't feel this way only at Regina. The same bullshit happened at North Central, where Alex went to junior high. There were a bunch of kids who walked around like they were already chosen to play varsity for West. As the article about the West varsity boy's team mentions, there is only one senior on the team. Think about that. When that senior was a sophomore, was he the only one on the team? Of course not. The funnel tightened for the rest of his teammates until they decided to not continue playing for their high school basketball team. And looking ahead to next year, this all means that of the 15 current members of the West varsity team, 14 of them will return, including 4 of the 5 starters. What does that mean for the 15 kids on the sophomore team who are looking ahead to their junior and senior year? Some of those 15 kids were the ones walking around North Central as though their destiny was a given. Alex went out for the freshman basketball team at Iowa City West, but did not go out this year. Other kids that were on his freshman basketball team didn't go out either. The 30 kids that played basketball as freshmen has now become a single team of 15 kids. The current West sophomore boy's basketball team also includes two freshmen so that means, more or less, that two of the 30 kids that played last year are not playing as much as this year.

I don't know what the future holds for all of these kids. I can say that nothing - NOTHING - in this world is a given in athletics. EVER.

Letting Go

Today is about letting go. Alex graduated from 6th grade @ Regina. Letting go means saying goodbye to friends and classmates. It means knowing that no matter what is said or done, life is going to be different. It means not going swimming when your friend forgot his swimming suit. It means eating pizza and cake and shooting baskets and pool. It means smiling.

It means life is forever never going to be the way it was.

This also applies to my life. Since I left the employer where I was for 12 years, life has not been the same. Friends I had there are still important to me. We met for pizza and talked for one hour. It was the first time in 6 months. I look forward to always having the three I ate with as my friends.

At the same time, I am moving forward.

Editor's Note: Who were the three other friends you ate lunch with?

Return to Forever

I'm going to the doctor today. Hopefully, the pneumonia has broken up enough in my lungs and I can return to my "normal" life.
I just got a phone call from Karen that the Iowa City School District voted to not bus Regina kids anymore. This is terrible for me. I will now have to drive
from North Liberty to Regina (20 minutes when the traffic and weather are perfect),
back past North Liberty (20 minutes),
north on I-380 (20 minutes) to work.

My morning commute just tripled.

Just Me...

Karen is with her mom, aunt, and cousin in Des Moines, IA, on their yearly "WWA" or "Women's Weekend Away" which, from the little I am told, means they shop and eat and drink as a family. Normally, there are 6 but this year neither my sister-in-law nor Karen's aunt's other daughter are joining them. So it's 4.

On the home front, we rented "GI Joe", "Mrs. Doubtfire", and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" to keep us busy. Alex and I watched Joe earlier this afternoon. Then I took Megan to the junior high dance, came home, then returned to her school to give her the $3 I had in my pocket that was to go to her hands when she got out of the truck.

Just checked the radio and Regina is playing Solon tonight in a state playoff game. The last time these two teams met, Solon pounced early and often and built up a huge lead. At the beginning of the 4th quarter, it was 42-7 in Solon's favor. I think a state championship in football is heading to Solon this month.

Tomorrow, the Hawkeyes put their undefeated season on the line against Northwestern. That game is @ 11 so I'm hoping to watch it. Nothing I can think of would stop me.

This dream job was passed along to me. I am not qualified but I sure would like to be:

That sounds like a tremendous opportunity.

In other news, Alex's basketball team is 0-3. We lost on Tuesday night. Again. Losing sucks.
Joe Paterno did inspire me this week with this quote that was passed along:

"There are many people, particularly in sports, who think that success and excellence are the same thing and they are not the same thing. Excellence is something that is lasting and dependable and largely within a person's control. In contrast, success is perishable and is often outside our control... If you strive for excellence, you will probably be successful eventually... people who put excellence in first place have the patience to end up with success... An additional burden for the victim of the success mentality is that he/she is threatened by the success of others and resents real excellence. In contrast, the person fascinated by quality is excited when he/she sees it in others".

Moving on... the latest Revelation Theory (now known as Rev Theory) arrived in my mailbox this week. Also an Alter Bridge DVD and two CDs from artists I've never heard of until I opened the envelope. I have a lot of review writing to do and I hope to tackle some of them tomorrow AM!

I was a PPP last night

Regina had their pre-Gala at the gym. Before that, we met up with some couples we know at the Blackstone restaurant. I played one game of pool while we waited for the others to arrive. I was a PPP (Pitiful Pool Player). The first ball I knocked down the hole? The 8 ball. It was pathetic. I was embarassed. After that, I couldn't establish a flow to my shots. I missed way too many easy shots.

After that debacle, I had a delicious grilled chicken sandwich with cheese and bacon on it, plus some seasoned french fries. The Miller Lite pints tasted very good too.

The pre-Gala was fine. You walk around and socialize with your friends and donate money to the school. They serve adult beverages as well as lots of donated snacks.

We left a little after 9. The kids had put themselves in bed - not requiring a babysitter has its perks - and after checking on them, we watched the last part of "Revenge of the Nerds." I had forgotten that Dr. Mark Greene was in that movie.

Today, Karen is going to bake for the bake sale that is happening tomorrow @ church. The purpose of the bake sale is to raise money for an electronic drumset that will be used in our new building. The advantage of electronic drums is that you can hook them into the sound system. The biggest problem I have playing drums @ Mass is that I can only hear the piano. Keith, our bassist, has his amp facing out towards the congregation so I can't really hear him. The speaker that the vocalist come out of is pointed at the congregation so I can't hear them either. I am planning to play drums tonight @ 5:15 Mass after taking last week off while our Music Director was visiting friends in Texas.

It's actually kind of an easy weekend for us. Alex and Megan have their piano recital on Sunday - they have to be there @ 1 and the actual recital is @ 2 - and then I have a meeting @ church from 6:30-8:30.

Regina is Done

Regina played Mid-Prairie last night and lost so the football team is done for the year. They lost 38-20. Not the way the Regal fans are used to ending their season. No trip to the UNI-Dome (where state football is held) this year.

Still no word on Metallica.

FFF & DD

We went to the Regina Fall Fun Festival last night.

First we wnet to Mass @ 6. Then Karen and I rushed from Mass to the beer tent to work from 7-9 (tell me we're not Catholic?!?). After working, we met up with some friends. There was a band called "Twist and Shout" playing. Megan's friend's dad, Jeff, plays bass. We both were checking out the band, 1/2 wishing they'd ask us to sit in, but that didn't happen. I said to him, "All we need is a guitarist and a vocalist and we're up there in 2009." He agreed.

I also talked to my friend Randy for a bit. I hadn't seen or talked to him in ... a long time.

While I was waiting for Karen to finish talking to one of her friends, I was talking to another of my friends - can you believe I have friends? - Paul. Paul's son is playing guitar in a band called Girl Repellant. Paul is a good guy - I like talking to him. We were talking and this woman comes over to us and says I don't know what's going on but those kids over there are acting up. I think it's the one in the green hat.

So Paul and I walked over there. We found the kid in a green hat and just sat in the general vicinity of the supposed trouble. Nothing happened. I asked the kid in the green hat if he was okay. He said yes. I asked him if he needed help and he said no. Then he left.

Today we are going to clean a couple of windows - yuck - and then return to the Regina FFF to play bingo. After bingo, the plan is to stop @ Hy-Vee, pick up a pizza for Alex and I and Chinese for Karen and Megan, and return home. After we eat, we need to clean Megan's window on the side of the house. We need to get the ladder up to the 2nd floor and monkey around with trying to clean it. I am not looking forward to that. I am fearful I will drop the window and watch it shatter on the ground as that would be 'my luck' to have that happen.

So, here's hoping that my next entry doesn't start out "be weary of what you fear because it can happen."

After that group of friends left, I rode the ferris wheel with Megan and then we went home.

One final note: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=4689215&blogID=428574837 sounds very cool...
