Good Drumming on Facebook

I came upon this video that features Mike Portnoy playing drums on a cover of Metallica's "The Shortest Straw," which is a killer tune: https://fb.watch/amGu097ewi

I came upon this video that features Ami Kim playing a drum cover of Metallica's "Dyers Eve," which is a killer tune: ahttps://fb.watch/amGAuMggwF/

Happy is an Adjective

Mike Portnoy is the quadruple threat: he can sing, play drums, play bass, and play guitar.

I will never be able to do that.

Before watching the video below, here's what to look for:

No idea what all of that stuff is, but it's displayed awesomely!
How many CDs does he have in his collection?!? I sure would love the opportunity to convert each CD to MP3 for him!

No WD or D or E

My concerts are getting lined up already for 2019.
I saw that the Winery Dogs - Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Doug Pinnick - are not going to stop in Iowa on their 2019 tour.

For once, I think that it's a good thing a tour is skipping Iowa as I don't think I can add another concert to my docket - there are so many to choose from! In fact, just yesterday, I received this:

[‎12/‎6/‎2018 12:44 PM] Friend who Works on the second floor of my building
Hi ... would also be interested in Dawes at the Englert? https://englert.org/event/an-evening-with-dawes-2/

[‎12/‎6/‎2018 12:49 PM] Me
That's a couple of days before Bayside - I better not push my luck with going to any more concerts.
After Bayside in Jan, I'm going to Shinedown / Papa Roach / Asking Alexandria on 3/16 in CR.
During the summer, I'm going to Ozzy / Megadeth in Des Moines - spending $150 on that ticket.
Just yesterday, was asked if my wife and I wanted to go see Garth Brooks in Mpls on 5/4 - those tix are ~$90 each...

Not only do I need to skip Dawes, I need to skip Everclear @ the Riverside Casino on Saturday, January 25, 2019, which is the night before Dawes. Tickets for Everclear are a measly $20. Still, I can't justify skipping Dawes because I don't want to spend more $ on concerts, just to turn around and go to Everclear the night before Dawes. I can't always be certain to use rigid logic when it comes to the choices I make in life, but I know skipping Dawes to go to Everclear makes ZERO sense!

Totally Decent? WTF?!?

From this article - Mike Portnoy on Metallica: “Never Has Such a Huge, Huge Band Had so Many Misses” April 26th, 2018 at 9:01am Axl Rosenberg - comes this:

... everyone seems to agree that Hardwired is totally decent...

If you read that jibberish and suppressed a little vomit in your mouth, you are not alone.

Rush Not Peartless

http://societyofrock.com/alex-lifeson-finally-speaks-up-about-latest-rush-reunion-rumors-but-fans-wont-like-his-answer/
I mean, seriously, is there a drummer that plays just like this?!?

Honestly, the first name to come to mind is Mike Portnoy. He would be able to do this gig.

Firing up the Lars Lashings with the bold-italic last sentence in the article

From this article - Lars Ulrich: Who I Would Choose to Replace Me in Metallica While we're at it - who do you think would be the best choice? - comes a very broad invitation for the Internet trolls who bash Lars Ulrich's drumming to creep out of the corners of the Internet and into the broad daylight:

Mr. Lars Ulrich was asked by 98 Rock to single out the drummer he would choose to replace him in Metallica if he had to, to which he replied (via Blabbermouth):
"If I could pick it, if I could hear somebody drum behind Hetfield's riffs, I'd take [classic AC/DC drummer] Phil Rudd.
"He's been probably my main, biggest source of inspiration when we did the turnaway from the super-progressive stuff, the crazy stuff after 'Justice,' when we got into the 'Black Album' and the 'Load' stuff, when it got a little more about the bounce and the riffs and the feel and the groove and all that.
"Phil Rudd, he's the top of that pyramid. Hearing Phil Rudd play behind James, that'd be pretty cool."
While we're at it - who do you think would be a good replacement for Lars?

Personally, I would choose Chris Adler - Lamb of God - as Ulrich's replacement. I think he is really a phenomenal drummer, he's grounded in reality and seems like a fantastic all-around person. I realize arguments could be made for the following drummers:
  1. Charlie Benante - Anthrax
  2. Dave Lombardo - Suicidal Tendencies (and others)
  3. Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater (and others)
  4. Gene Hoglan - Testament (and others)
My hope is that there is not a day when Ulrich has to be replaced.

Port-Haak-Smit

All of these videos could have been a standalone post on their own merits, but they're collected as one because there is a common thread that unites them. See below the 5th video for the reason these 3 drummers belong together.

As for the drummers themselves, two need no introduction: Mike Portnoy and Chad Smith. The third, Tomas Haake does. He is the drummer for Meshuggah, a band that is playing on the Friday night of Chicago Open Air 2017 in July 2017. There are many bands I need to bone up on prior to July 2017 and Meshuggah is one of those bands.

The reason these 3 drummers belong together is that they are all Sabian cymbal endorsers.
And here's another fun fact. If I had seen the video below, I likely would not have sought to hear any Meshuggah tunes.

Editor's Note: Because of embedding the two videos of Tomas Haake playing drums, the "Meshuggah" tag has been added to this blog. Because of embedding the video of Mike Portnoy playing an Adrenaline Mob tune, the "Adrenaline Mob" tag has been added to this blog.

Ulrich & Van Halen & Liberty & Criss MIA

This is a sorted by number version of the drummer list on Thunder Drummer. I'm putting this list here because I noticed four of my drumming influences are not list, which are:
  1. Lars Ulrich
  2. Alex Van Halen
  3. Liberty DeVito
  4. Peter Criss
It doesn't mean the list is incomplete - it's just what I noticed.

There are a lot of drummers I've never heard of, such as "Valerio Villa" and "Tim Yeung." Maybe I'll find a new Lars / Alex / Liberty / Peter when I dive into the above list!
