More than 600

Sometimes, I think it would be an awesome job to sit and rip CDs all day. I have thought about this many times, usually when I am in the bowels of a CD to MP3 conversion, which I am right now. I thought about that again when I saw http://www.dmp3digital.com/.

Where I'm at with the CD to MP3 conversion that I started on 6/6/2016 is I have finished 11 spindles in 219 days.

If it takes 219 days to rip 1100 spindles, how many days will it take to rip the remaining 3800?

219 x 3800 = 832200, divided by 1100 = 756.5454545454545 so let's say 757. From today, 1/11/2017, 757 days away is Thursday, 2/7/2019. My original goal was to work on this project until Saturday, March 2, 2019. I am okay with the gap between 2/7 & 3/1 because I also have a spindle of 50 "Life CDs" which came from the "Life Tapes" I used to make every so often. Because I hate math, it's easier to say "I have 4900 CDs" instead of "I have 4950 CDs." At least to me, it is simpler.

Anyways, 3800 x $1.09 = $4142. That's quite a bit of money to pay someone to rip CDs! Frankly, considering that the company hasn't updated their blog since 11/21/2013 (3 years, 1 month, 3 weeks or 1147 days), I am a little hesitant to invest in them as a company.

Clean Me Up

I feel like I'm entering the home stretch with the CD reconversion. When I just ran my DOS batch file, I got 66003 File(s) as a result. My status has been ever changing over the last few weeks. Off the top of my head, this is what remains:
  1. ~100 CDs that I *think* I converted, but since I'm not sure, I'm auditing them.
  2. ~100 CDs that I *think* must all have the song and artist information added manually.
  3. ~100 CDs that are either custom made mix CDs or Life CDs, which I have written about previously on this blog.
I *think* that's it. 300 CDs to go and so far, for the CDs in #1 above, I have been making good progress. I didn't work on the audit last night, but plan to do so tonight. I admit freely that I'm not looking forward to doing the CDs in #2 or #3 as they are going to take more time per CD. For the CDs in #2, usually, a CD is ripped in no more than 5 minutes, but if I am going to be manually typing song names and artist information, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned into an average of 10 minutes a CD. For the CDs in #3, these are all CDs that have songs that exist "somewhere" in my CDs, but because the CDs were created the way in which I did, the information is not included when I rip the CD. I get "Unknown Artist" on an "Unknown Album" (essentially). That results in at least listening to enough of the song until I recognize it. Sometimes, I don't remember the artist for the song. Sometimes I can see the album cover or recognize the voice or the drums or the riff, but can't immediately state, "That is Hypnos' "I Am the Wind" (which is a song I recognized.) These CDs rely upon my memory and since the CDs were created nearly 6 years ago (the latest Life CD I have seen is from 2008), it's not always easy to remember those details. All of this leads me to the realization that there are 80 days until my self-imposed deadline of December 1, 2014. Honestly, as I look at the calendar, there's a limited number of hours to which I can devote to this project. It'll be interesting.

More Trips Down the Memory Garden

Converted a few more cassettes today. Some in a series called "Life Tape" featured bands I had not listened to the last time I listened to the tape. My "Life Tape" series came as the successor to the "College Tape" series. I used to have an answering machine that used cassettes. I would transfer messages from the answering machine tape to a separate cassette and then fill in the rest of the tape with the songs I listened to at the time. In hindsight, it was like an audio diary. I can hear voices of people I haven't seen or thought about for over 20 years.

But today it was listening to Life Tapes from 1995, 1996, and 1998. I'm sure there are others. The difference between a College Tape and a Life Tape is that a Life Tape has no answering machine messages because that machine was replaced with a micro cassette machine and after then a machine with no external storage like a cassette. You press the Play button and the message plays. Like those College Tapes, the Life Tapes are an audio diary of what music and what bands I liked at the time. A lot of the bands are no longer together and that's too bad.

What I'm converting now is a 60 minute cassette called "Assume's Greatest Moments Vol. I" and what a trip. There's the first song I ever *EVER* played with James, the first time James and I *EVER* played with Ken and, unfortunately, the last time Assume rehearsed, which was late August 1989 when it was just James, Ken, and I butchering Whitesnake's "Slide It In" with desparately out of tune guitars. James' guitar string breaks towards the end and it's up to Ken and I (yes, the same Ken from the other day) to bring the song home.

There's also the hilarious time James and I tried to play "The Shortest Straw." It was, at the time, the fastest I had ever tried to play. I stopped and complained that it was too fast and that it hurt to play. The always sympathetic James snarls, "Well play it any way! No pain no gain!"

Isn't that the way it is in life? No pain, no gain.
