Nebraska Coach Makes Eddie Murphy Blush
It came out on Friday, September 13, 2013, that in 2011, the Nebraska football coach criticized the fans. You should not listen unless you can tolerate the f-bomb because the man was clearly upset. In this story about where he feels free to vent his frustrations remarks, Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz reminds us all that we live in a digital age. More on that in a moment.
First, though, I remember when Eddie Murphy swore and when watching "Delirious" was 'a big deal' in 7th or 8th grade. I was not old enough to watch a rated R DVD, but there I was, laughing when I watched him on HBO. Recently, I purchased the DVD and I still laugh when he talks about life and his use of the f-bomb is really funny. I still hold that concert, that movie, up on a pedestal as good comedy.
I think I used to swear more when I was younger. I don't hear myself saying curse words nearly as much as I used to and I think that's awesome. I also think in a lot of ways, I am in such a better place than where I have been in the past. I love my wife. I love my kids. I love my job. I play drums in a band. I am working on some known character flaws in an effort to improve who I am in this world.
Back to the point about living in a digital age. When Alex and I went to Shinedown in August 2013, it seemed like everyone had a phone and was taking video or pictures during the concert. Showing my age, I remember when it was a big thing to get bootleg concert recordings. I remember buying a cassette for $5 of the Dokken concert I attended in 1986 and I remember using my father's portable cassette recorder to record other concerts. I remember an usher giving me the stink eye during a concert because she saw me using it. Bands, in general, used to be able to control how their music was presented in the sense that if they hit a wrong note or missed a cue during a concert, chances are their mistake wouldn't be released to the masses. I know that bootleg recordings have always been around, but in this digital age, there's a sense of entitlement among people that if you pay money for a concert ticket and you have a phone that can take video or pictures, you are able to do so because you paid to see the band. The counter argument is that, no, you don't have that right because all you paid for was to see the concert, not capture it digitally.
Some bands have embraced this digital age. My favorite band, Metallica, has a website livemetallica.com where you can purchase MP3s of any of their shows. They found a way to generate revenue and, somewhat, control the way their band is presented. Of course, searching for "Metallica full show" on youtube.com yields a lot of results. Technically, you could then use a youtube-to-MP3 converter and end up with a MP3 of the video.
Back to the football story, the Nebraska coach will probably not get fired as he has apologized for his comments. Did he really need to apologize for what he thought was a private conversation? I don't know the answer. I think it is right for him to apologize. I also think it is not right to use that type of language.

Progressing
The music collection continues to grow, though I haven't made progress on the LP to MP3 project since receiving my new converter in the mail. I'd like to possibly resume that on Saturday, but our plans are kind of up in the air. I'd like to go to the Iowa men's swim meet with Alex on Saturday morning, but I also know Mark and Susie are coming down for an appointment - but we don't know what time yet and Susie didn't text me back. If I do not resume the LP to MP3 conversion, I'll probably get at least a couple of cassettes converted. I'm nearing completion of box number 1 that was supposed to be done in the July / August 2012 time frame. That has, obviously, slipped. I also can do some remaining CDs. I found a Rubbermaid of CDs that are not in the database of albums that I access through Windows Media Player. That means I have to rip the CD to MP3 and manually change the details from "Unknown Album" to the actual name of the album. It's kind of tedious, but these are mainly CDs that are either local artists or underground bands. The other project of using the YouTube to MP3 software continues as well. This is my current count:
I was planning to go to 11 AM Mass on Sunday - the youth group were scheduled to play - and then have band rehearsal after that at Joe's girlfriend's studio. Both of those plans have fallen through. The youth group isn't playing because some kids involved with it are out of town at a vocal contest.

We’re going to wait a week to sing at the 11am Mass this month. There’s an out-of-state show choir competition this weekend that will take a bunch of our singers away so hopefully next weekend will work better for us to sing at Mass. Thanks Everyone! See you on Sunday, February 3rd!
As far as the band goes, Brian Guitar is out of town this weekend. Tentatively, the band is planning to get together at the studio.
I need to spend some more time with the drumbeat to Tom Petty's "American Girl." It's turning into Tool's "46 & 2" which was a tough song for me to nail back in 2000.
Finally, in other news, the 200 Days project rolls along. Today is 195 days until our 20th wedding anniversary. That means I have 194 days to figure out what to get Karen. I'll probably need all 194 days!
Editor's Note: There were many ideas for a band name for this band, including "Hairy Eyeball" and "Scary Robots." We eventually settled on Lou's Classic Ride.

Weekend Plans
I cleaned the den. That should not be as big of a deal as I consider it, but it was long overdue. I had assembled a work station setup with two card tables and a TV tray to facilitate the LP to MP3 conversion and, with the deadline-driven LP to MP3 conversion phase complete, it needed to be taken down. I had also not thought out how I was going to manage the "done/not done" separation of the CD to MP3 project so I had CD-R spindles all over. Additionally, there was general clutter on the computer desk that I had been neglecting.
So, last night, I took blue painter's tape and a black magic marker and put tape on each spindle with the words "done" or "not done" from what I could figure out. I also taped together a couple of stacks of CDs that were still in their cases with "done" or "not done" or "double-check" so I hope when I return to the CD to MP3 project in the future, I will know exactly what needs to be done. At some point, I will want to do an audit of all my CDs and make sure that what I think I have on my external hard drive is actually there.

Just because I haven't written a lot lately does not mean I am sitting around, bored out of my mind. In fact, July has flown by. We spend weekends camping and when home, it seems like this has been the summer of the mower. We have had a lot of things going on when we are home.

MP3 Kingdom II & Never Enough
Here's an atypical night. It's before 8 PM and I'm sitting @ the PC.
Karen is watching "The Bachelor."
Megan doesn't (apparently) have any more homework so she took our bedroom and is watching Disney Channel.
Alex missed 13 words (out of 25) on his spelling list tonight so I cut him a break and have him writing each word 5 times, instead of 10.
Me? I'm sitting @ MP3 Kingdom, charging each kids' MP3 player and passing time until "24" begins @ 8.
Work was okay. I did a lot of user interface design today. I am starting to get more comfortable with designing the UI and making the Windows interface for our software. The underlying green screen keeps getting fuller and fuller so it becomes a regular challenge to design the panel to where the new field makes sense.
On my commute up I-380 today, I heard a song by a band called Five Finger Death Punch. The song is called "Never Enough." As I listened to it, and reflected on the lyrics, I tried to pick out a person or group of persons that I could take these words as a rally cry of sorts, like I did with the Staind song "For You" and the Linkin Park song "Numb." Both of those songs were motivational, to me, as I struggled to navigate through relationships that I can honestly say have repaired themselves. So, for once, I do not feel angry with anyone. It's kind of an odd feeling. Things are okay. Really. My wife, kids, and I are doing fine & the majority of my other relationships have not hit any recent snags. In fact, those that used to cause me to internalize their words and find fault in them... I don't feel that way anymore. I am in a better place than I was even a year ago. There's more calm, even considering the 90+ list of projects to do @ work, than in previous years.
Now, I have to say, this band's bass player is one scary guy. He's the one with the long beard and the mohawk.

MP3 Kingdom
In our house, we have two PCs, plus my mother's laptop (don't get too excited as the laptop has Windows ME on it). The PC I'm sitting at is the only one in the house with an Internet connection. Sitting here is like sitting high atop a mountain looking down. On one side of the mountain is the aforementioned laptop, which is mainly used by the kids to play games, and on the other side is the kids' main PC. This PC has Windows 98 on it and no Internet connection. It is used primarily for playing "Roller Coaster Tycoon II" and that's about it. Sometimes "Free Tetrix" gets fired up as well.
So, when my daughter or son want additional MP3s on their players, they have to wait for me to do it for them because I don't trust that they will do it right. Hence, this PC is like a MP3 kingdom.
Time for 11 Mass so I'm out.

Legal MP3s... What a concept!
Years ago, there was an online service that allowed you to search various PCs and select MP3s on those PCs and download them to your PC. I used that service to get a lot of MP3s and a lot of songs. Along the way between then and now, the service was shut down and my acquisition of MP3s decreased.
Yesterday, I went to Wal-Mart.com and started a new era of obtaining legal MP3 files. Megan got a gift card for downloading Taylor Swift's CD and Alex got a gift card for downloading 15 songs for $14. I had no problem with Megan's.
Alex's situation is a different story. I had to call Customer Support because I was getting an error message when I put in my claim code. I was told to put in a new code and, because I didn't understand what Customer Support was saying, I downloaded a song that Alex didn't want. Also, in this process, I had to take a screen capture of the songs Alex wants so that I can re-add them to my cart. So that's what I'm doing now.
Wal-Mart may have a lot of money but their website is so damn slow! I'm not on dial-up, but this website goes so damn slow! I click and wait, click and wait. SO SLOOOWWW.
Did I mention it's slow?
I am hoping to finish this task within a hour.
