There is a Delay to the Start of Summer Camping

I understand why... but that doesn't change how odd it feels to not be preparing to head to Elkader.

It's not just the campground. Yesterday, I received an email that said if you are an employee who is working remotely, you should plan to continue to work remotely until May 15th.

It feels like there's a lot of pressure on May 15th to deliver
  1. the end of working from home
  2. the opening of the campground
For the record, we have a seasonal campsite. I sent a check to Deer Run in April for ~$1700 that paid the balance of our seasonal campsite. The total for the season is $2471.00. The campsite is open for 183 days (6 months) from April 15 - October 15. That's a per day rate of ‭13.50273224043716‬. On May 15th, it will be closed for 30 days. ‭13.50273224043716‬ x 30 =  $405.0819672131148‬ as credit towards our monthly electric bill, which is never more than $100, or towards the 2021 camping season. It's a decision to be made in the future as I think it's too early to make any sort of bet on the 2021 camping season - it's one of many uncertainties in life at this point. Thus, I'll be determining what our total for electricity was for the 2019 season and make an informed decision. I will also consider whether the $2471.00 seasonal rate is going to increase. In 2016, it was $2075; in 2017, it was $2161.40; in 2018, it was $2268.40, in 2019, it was $2471, so, roughly, it increases $98.80 a year so 2021 would be $‭2,569.8‬0 (estimated).

A lot to think about for sure!

A Recent Purchase

Notice the title is NOT My Recent Purchase.

I did not purchase the camper below - my co-worker Tim did!

Vacation

I am away from my desk until July 1st.

Fear not! I have a Google Doc with (as of now) 212 links that I will transform into ~35 posts,  which doesn't include ~48 additional links to the Get Your Political Opinions Here 5.0 page, a new page for Gup and Company,  and a new page for the bowling games on Thursday, 6/28.

Plus,  I think that I have additional information to post on this blog.

Patients please...

Plans for Today through Monday

It has been a little bit - 2 weeks, 2 days - since we moved Alex and Megan into their living quarters at UNI. Today is when we will see them for the first time since that day. The kids are driving from Cedar Falls to Elkader to spend the weekend at the camper.

50 Million will Buy a LOT

Frankly, I don't take a lot of time to invest in what $50 million homes look like around the world - though I just breezed through the slideshow at the other end of the link. I have more important things to keep me busy. For one, we are heading up to Elkader for the weekend for what I hope is a relaxing weekend. This is the movie at the Elkader Theater, but Karen doesn't like 3D movies and it is only being shown in 3D when it is possible for Alex, his friend Austin, Karen, and I to go:

I personally don't have a problem with 3D movies so maybe I'll end up seeing it - the trailer looks funny.

Explanation

Regarding this cryptic post, the RoboCopy commands to create a backup on my 1 TB EHD (F) completed and the stats for the jobs are on that post. After those commands finished, I began another set of XCOPY commands to further separate the files I had been able to find on my working EHDs:
copy all JPG files that start with 0-9 from f: to a directory on the MyCloud I: drive
copy all JPG files that start with A-Z from f: to a directory on the MyCloud I: drive
to end up with
I:\0\0* files
I:\1\1* files
I:\a\a* files
... you get the idea. Because I used the XCOPY command with the /s parameter, I then have to use Search My Files to find all the files and cut them from the sub-folder to the root directory. Of course, this creates a lot of duplicate files that have to be separated into at least 5 categories:
  1. My pictures
  2. Karen's pictures
  3. Megan's pictures
  4. Alex's pictures
  5. Not one of the above
I expect this process to take a bit of time - as in hours - to complete. Even if I could finish a letter or number in one hour, that would be 35 hours and would take about a month, which is a very generous ballpark estimate. It is, of course, mid-April and our "busy" season. Talk has already turned to our soon to be chaotic schedule. On a very non-in-depth level, here's what the next month looks like:
  • West High production of "Mary Poppins" on 4/16
  • Mark, Susie, and the boys coming to our house on 4/22
  • Alex going to Beartooth at Gabe's Oasis on 4/23
  • Pulling the camper from storage in Zhwingle to Elkader for camping season on 4/30
  • Megan moving home from UNI, Jesse Manibussen concert at church, Karen's XX birthday, Mother's Day on May 6
  • Bring Me the Horizon concert on May 12 in Des Moines
  • Alex's Europe trip auditions in Des Moines, Matthew's wedding, and Alex's prom on May 14

Finding the time to sort hundreds of files? Going to be interesting...

Groundbreaking!

For the very first time *EVER* in our many years of camping in Elkader, I am sitting in our camper and connected to the Internet on a laptop and not my cell phone via our family's data plan. For $10, I now have a single access code that I can use on a single device. I chose to use it on my laptop with the idea that using data is an option, if I need it.

Today, we're going to the Sweet Corn Days parade downtown - actually, in 13 minutes. Traditionally, and I see no reason to not do it today, I visit the Elkader Public Library Book Sale. Two years ago, I purchased the PC towers and flat screen monitors that are in the den. One year ago, I took the printer / copier / scanner that they had marked as "free" home with me. I ended up purchasing a cable in Prairie Du Chien, WI, but the actual piece of hardware was free. Now, I have a second printer / copier / scanner in the den because when work decided to change to an Open Office layout, I was told there wouldn't be room for it on my new desk and that I could take it home, if I wanted.

Uh, YEAH!!!

Anyways, it's time to go see what I can get today at the book sale....and watch the parade as well.

Va Ca Day

Today is the beginning of the Sigwarth family reunion/campout in Elkader. I was wide awake at 6:15 today. I know the opportunity to sleep in was present, but it didn't matter. I had two thoughts. Either I could start thinking about loading the Ford with our camping supplies and not fall asleep or I could simply fall back asleep. I knew that if I fell asleep, when I woke up, I would regret that I hadn't gotten up at 6:15 and loaded the Ford. Thus, I got up and took some supplies to the Ford. I went through my golf bag and put the bean bag game in along with the Rubbermaids of food. I put my clothes in as well because I didn't want a repeat of the weekend (last summer) when I didn't remember my clothes and had to drive up to Prairie Du Chien, WI, to go to Wal-Mart to get clothes.

I admit I'm a little bit conflicted regarding whether to take my laptop to Elkader with me for the weekend. Part of me wants to test out the "new & improved" Wi-Fi that will be at our campsite during our month residency to gauge whether I could actually stay in Elkader during a week and work remotely. The other part of me doesn't want to bring it up so that I can authentically "unplug" for a period of time. I'm leaning towards "unplugging" this weekend and bringing up the laptop next weekend. There, I just decided.

I've never been a fan of the opening track on Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" release. I remember wishing "Fight Fire with Fire" would be the last track so I could stop my cassette player and fast forward. I may be thawing a bit in my harsh regard for the tune because when I watched the video below, I found myself gravitating to the intricate synchronized guitar solo. It made me think of the way Hetfield & Hammett are really a great duo on guitar.

I also have to say that I really enjoy watching the MetonTour videos. I like watching how the members interact in the tuning room prior to the gig... and watching Kirk Hammett untie and then retie his shoe.

Glad It's Not Time to Update

Yesterday was a busy day.

After Karen, Alex, and I woke up and got ready for the day, we got in the Ford and drove to Ketelsen's to pick up our camper. We hooked up to the Ford and drove to Zwingle, which is where we store it. Then we came back home.

When we got home, I worked on the consolidation of the multiple drives on the MyCloud drive. I copied a lot of files from various drives and directory structures to the My Book drive. I had 3 copy jobs running when I finally forced myself to go to bed at 12:15 AM. Those 3 copy jobs didn't complete because they were asking for confirmation that I wanted to overwrite existing files with the same name - I used Windows Explorer instead of DOS commands.

I just ran the DOS batch file for today. I can tell by the number that I have a lot of work to do prior to next Wednesday, which is when I'll update the page on this blog with my count for 10/1/2014. The number for the day is 146398 File(s) because when I copy a directory, I don't replace the file. I choose to keep whatever copies of the file exist. This results in creating duplicate files with (#), where # is a number that is incremented each time a file with the same name is copied into that directory.

Consider this directory with 263 File(s). That's 263 files for an album that has 13 songs. That's inflating today's count by 250. I have a lot of work to do.

I am ending this post here, there is nothing below the list.

Put to Sleep

Two things got put to sleep over the weekend. First, I am very happy today because the camper has been pulled from Ketelsen's to Zhwingle. There were no flat tires or other issues related to the physical pulling of the camper. Because we pull the camper very few times, it is often an intimidating task to approach. For example, we hooked the camper to the truck less than a dozen times - closer to 6 - and two of those would be when we pulled from our spot to behind the office and then back from behind the office to the spot we were in for our two months in Elkader.Whatever the number of times we hooked up, the camper is now safely stored indoors in Zhwingle and we will not see it for 7 months.

After we dropped off the camper, we went to my sister-in-law's house for lunch. I spent part of my time with my nephew and the rest of the time with Alex as we attempted to find Uncle Ike's in Dubuque. Unfortunately, the Garmin has the old address of Uncle Ike's and we did not make it to the store prior to 4:15 Mass at Holy Ghost. That turned out okay because I didn't really need anything at the store anyways.

The rest of the weekend was spent in Balltown. I couldn't get a good Euchre hand and if I had 4 hearts and a Ace of clubs, Louie made it Spades. We went to Breitbach's for breakfast on Sunday.

When we got home, Alex had confirmation class from 4:15 - 5:30, though he got let out late. After I dropped him off, I mowed 95% of the yard and, upon returning home, I mowed the last 5%. We got pizza from Pizza Hut for supper.

The other thing that got put to sleep was the series "Breaking Bad" that I think ended on a very good note. I liked how the story of Walter White got tied up nicely. Walter White transformed completely from mild mannered scientist to criminal mastermind. He had the opportunity to take out Jesse and he didn't. Where is Jesse now? I have no idea.

Almost immediately after Breaking Bad ended, I went to bed. I was exhausted. My head hit pillow and I was out.

Father's Day 2013

Life is good as a father when you get the new Black Sabbath release "13", a awesome chair to use around the campfire, and a golf glove. I am happy.

This weekend was good as well.

Perhaps the only downside was that I neglected to bring my journal with me to Elkader. I am on page 35 of 96 in my assigned section of my 200 page 5 subject notebook and I should have been on page 48 yesterday if I would adhere to a 'half of the month = half of the section' kind of target. I am hoping that this week allows for some time at night for writing.

Of course, this week is busy. Megan is working 27 hours this week, there's baseball games and... well, here:
  • Monday
    • Eye appointments
  • Tuesday
    • Megan - works @ 6 AM!
    • Alex - baseball game
  • Wednesday
    • Alex - baseball game
  • Thursday
    • Not sure
  • Friday
    • Scary Robots rehearsal!
    • Riverside Casino @ night for Louie's birthday?
  • Saturday
    • Alex - double header baseball game
    • Everyone but Megan - 5:15 Mass?
  • Sunday
    • Megan - 11 AM Mass
And then the whole cycle resumes...

Editor's Note: as of 7/1/2013, the working title of our band is Lou's Classic Ride.

Surpassed the Goal!

Back on March 15, 2013, I published a schedule of milestones for the conversion to MP3s.
Goal:    52356.
Actual: 57074
Full data: 57074 File(s) 428,604,099,340 bytes

In other news, today was crazy. What should be a holiday was anything but relaxing. It was chaos, pure and simple.

We picked up the camper in Zhwingle but:
  1. I forgot to pack the battery for the camper (and Karen didn't think of it either until we were looking at the camper)
  2. One of the tires was low so a valve stem had to be replaced.
  3. The valve stem was replaced while I was on the road back to Theissen's in Dubuque to get a battery. However, I learned that the space on our camper fits a "24" battery and I did not know that. I bought a 27 so it was too big for the space. We had to use bungee cords to secure it for the ride home.
  4. On the way home, it rained, but was not nearly as terrible as it could have been.
  5. After getting home, we unhooked the camper.
  6. On my 'to do' list was to return the 27 battery to the Coralville Theissen's so I left to do that. Alex and Karen went with me.
  7. When I got home, I showered and went with Megan to her final private saxophone lesson with Jane. After her lesson, we picked up Wendy's. Megan and I had a really good conversation about music and her future with playing the saxophone.
  8. After supper, it had not rained yet, so I started to mow. After our yard was done, I realized that if the lady behind us waited until the next time it wasn't raining before mowing again, she would have a mess. I mowed her yard.
  9. Her neighbor was putting down hay for some new grass seed and I talked to him about the deer meeting his mini-van. We talked about camping and storing campers.
  10. At home, the kids were shooed off to bed and now, at 11:55 PM, it's damn near time for me to go to bed as well.
The upcoming week is really crazy and full of things we have to get done. Without a doubt, it is officially camping season in my world as what was done prior to camping season is unlikely to happen until after camping season. It's the way life is when you're who I am. Nothing changes - year after year, day after day in the camping season, life progresses.

Anyways, pleasant thoughts.

Consider this

This week looks to be not as busy as previous weeks with just lessons on Monday and a baseball game on Thursday. Megan's driver's education class is over so that lightens up the nights a bit. There is a lot going on in my life and it makes things really chaotic at times.

First up on the agenda is getting the camper. We are pulling the camper home today and when we do this, we drive through the yard of the neighbor behind us and into the camper's spot next to our garage. It rained all day yesterday - which was definitely needed for the yards - but the concern was the neighbor's yard may be too mushy for us to drive through. I don't really think we would get stuck, but I do think the tire tracks could leave a more lasting mark in the wet grass. As it turns into today, the wind is blowing the grass dry and hopefully, upon our return to our house with the camper behind us, it will be dry. The forecast is for rain, which is not a good thing. I'd rather have gotten up earlier (it was 8 when I got up) and left the house by 9, up to the camper by 11 and home by 2, but that was not the plan.

Once we are home, tonight is the 2 hour season finale of "Desparate Housewives", the season finale of "Survivor". Those shows are on ABC and CBS, respectively. We'll PVR both shows.

The other 'must see TV' tonight is TNA has a PPV called "Sacrifice". The main event is Rob Van Damme v. Sting. I expect Sting to win (yay!) because Mr. Andersen just won the 25 man battle royal to become the #1 contender for Sting's championship belt. Update! Here are the results of "Sacrifice". The PPV next month is considered by some to be TNA's 'Wrestlemania' PPV that sets the tone for the next year. I expect Andersen and Sting to battle at that PPV *UNLESS* they want to put Hulk Hogan v. Sting @ that PPV to draw a big audience. I read that on the Internet - not my original idea - that the end game for the championship belt is to put it on Hogan's waist *again*. The only question that remains is whether Hogan can go an entire match with Sting.

By the time I get to bed, I will have had a long day and will probaby be very tired but that is my life for today.

A new Look

There are so many things happening in life right now, it's hard to capture them in words.

  1. The camping season is over so we are actively seeking winter storage. We are hoping the finalize where we will store the camper within the next week.
  2. There were repairs that needed to be made to the camper. We are also actively seeking to have those resolved prior to taking the camper to storage.
  3. Alex's basketball season will kick off next week, the Thursday after Labor Day. We will have fewer kids than last year so each player will be expected to contribute.
  4. Work is insanely busy as I push to get my work done that must be completed prior to the update being released to clients. After a co-worker finishes a task, I will have (roughly) 3 days of work. That was my guess. I hope it goes a lot quicker (like 1 morning :>)) but I don't want to jinx myself.
  5. We added a third driver last week (actually, the license arrived this week) so I will be starting driver's ed (go to an empty parking lot before getting into traffic) soon.
  6. Played drums @ Mass on Sunday @ 11 and it was fantastic! There were 14 high schoolers singing their guts out and two guitarists along with piano and clarinet. It sounded great. I'd really like to start recording the way we sounded!
  7. We go to the Brewers/Cubs game on 9/12 but are leaving 9/11, the day of the Iowa/ISU game. Tentatively, we will go to the Miller Brewery tour on Saturday. The assembly line fascinates me.
  8. My father-in-law, Karen, our neighbor Mike, and I hung cabinets in the laundry room. We have more to hang in our storage room, but it's probably going to be a month before I think about it. Seriously.
  9. The CDs to review keep roaring in. Wrote a review of Emily Shirley's 5 song EP. Liked it. I have a "Classic Albums" DVD of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" and I hope to get Avenge Sevenfold's new one along with the "Big Four" DVD (Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth) soon. I have a large backlog. I'd like to say I'm going to write a review a day for the month of September, but I'm not sure if that's possible.
  10. I have been dabbling into songwriting again, something I kind of gave up in 1995 when it just didn't seem like I could write anything else. I've put together nearly 30 songs with some ideas for music on a yellow legal tablet. Some of them were written just to write them, but a couple of them have potential. Some of the titles are "Your Moment to be Dead", "No Rhythm", and "When You Say Die," and "No Return to Sender". I don't have my notebook next to me to even say if these are all ones I would consider having potential. I know "Your Moment to be Dead" and "When You Say Die" have some musical ideas written down on the rough draft of the sheet of paper. I am transcribing them into a single notebook and, actually, have written a couple of others. I'm not taking it too seriously but I would like to think that if a guitarist called me up and said, "Hey, let's do original music" that maybe some of the ideas I've written down in July/August might be interesting to try out.
  11. I'm working on a couple of personal projects involving efforts to improve myself. I have lost 20 pounds (going from 244 to 224) and I would like to lose another 20. I'm trying to make smart choices regarding food and drink less Pepsi, though some days, that is really hard. I am also trying to pray more and to thank God daily for his blessings on my life and family. There are also prayers for my wife as she deals with me , my daughter who is dealing with being a teenager, and for my son who is dealing with his sister being a teenager. I also have added prayers for my mother in the nursing home with AD, for my father who is dealing with a wife of nearly 50 years deteriorate in front of him, for my brother and sister-in-law who are expecting a baby girl in December. I also have been saying prayers for my co-worker's daughter who was found dead in February, for my co-worker who was struck on her bike by a truck, and for my manager's mother who was buried earlier this month.
  12. On a lighter note, I got to sit at the electronic drum set at West Music on Monday night during Alex's lesson. It felt so good to play drums! It was so awesome! It really, truly, is a highlight of my week. I put on headphones, press a button to take out the prerecorded drum part, and pick a genre like "LA Metal" or "Rock and Roll" or even "Country" and just jam out. No one can hear me except for the tap tap tap of the pads. It is so much fun.

And with that, good night. I hope to have more posts in the month of September than I did in August. What's the point of a blog if it's never updated? Exactly! I think maybe tomorrow night I will purge my inbox, like I wrote about last time.

Or not.

One Day

The very first play of the PSU v. U of I game last night was a 79 yard TD. Within seconds, PSU is up 7-0 and, I admit, I thought it was a sign of things to come. It wasn't until Iowa started ignoring the 100,000+ people in the stands that Iowa mounted a defense, made some offensive gains, and walked out of Happy Valley, PA, well... happy. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 and on their way to a great season. Road games are never easy for any team and with the victory, the target on Iowa's back just got larger. I personally think it's too early to start talking about bowl games or a Big Ten championship. There are more games to be played. Iowa does *NOT* have the luxury of looking past their next opponent to a January bowl game. They must remain focused and continue to take each game seriously. I wish them the best of luck and I hope they are successful.

In other news, this is going to be a busy week.

Monday - Megan has a volleyball game and also starts religious ed class since she is not going to Regina anymore.
Tuesday - Alex has tutor until 4:30, Megan has volleyball practice until 6:05 and then Karen, and Megan have haircuts @ 6:30.
Wednesday - Megan has volleyball practice until 6:05, Alex has basketball practice from 6-6:25 and tutor from 6:30-7:30
Thursday - Megan has a volleyball game, there's an ortho (orthodontist?) appt @ 8:00 and it's my 11 year anniversary at my employer. Also, new Survivor and Grey's Anatomy.
Friday - Megan has volleyball practice until 6:05, then we are racing up to Cedar Falls to see my brother-in-law's band the Hoodads play @ the Hub. We're spending the night.
Saturday - I have a CEW meeting from 9-12. Then we'll come home. Iowa plays @ 11. We'll probably go to 5:15 church or possibly stop in Cedar Rapids on the way home.
Sunday - Alex has basketball practice from 6-7.

The week of 10/5 - 10/9 is chaos.

Monday - Megan has a volleyball game and also has religious ed class.
Tuesday - Alex has tutor until 4:30, Megan has volleyball practice until 5:05.
Wednesday - Megan has volleyball practice until 5:05, Alex has basketball practice from 6-6:25 and tutor from 6:30-7:30
Thursday - Megan has her final volleyball game. Also, new Survivor and Grey's Anatomy.
Friday - going to the Lamb of God / GWAR / Job for a Cowboy concert in Des Moines with Phil. Have to decide if I'm going to drink beer because there is a blood drive that day as well and I don't want to donate and drink beer the same night.
Saturday - Iowa plays football, I think. We'll probably go to 5:15 church.
Sunday - Alex has basketball practice from 6-7.

I understand that one day, this will all be over. The kids will either drive themselves to where they need to go or they will be out of the house. It's a crazy time now.

The other big thing is that we sold our camper yesterday... and promptly went to Ketelsen's RV to look at ones they have on their lot. Not sure where that is going to go.
