Bigger than One Man
The headline is screaming for anyone to read it!
The article under the headline is mystifying, basing its claim that the season was lost because of one injury to a key player. The doom and gloom begins with the opening of the article, "The second Paul George went up to block that James Harden layup this summer in the Team USA scrimmage, this season was lost for the Indiana Pacers" and doesn't give any credit to any other player stepping up to make a difference.
And, okay, fine. The season began rough (3-6).
But there are 82 games this season. How can anyone possibly know what their final record will be when the 2015 NBA Playoffs arrive?
This isn't a blind "I am a Pacers fan so I think they will make a 20 point comeback with a minute in the game" fan speaking. Authentically, how does this author know what their final record will be?

Breathe in, Breathe out
As I watched Alex's baseball team play Keota in North Liberty, I could feel the frustration in the air. At first, the game was close. They were ahead, then we were, then them, then us, until at some point, the frustration of making mistakes - three dropped pop flies, overthrows to bases, being a step too slow to tag out a runner at home, pitches hitting two batters - just overwhelmed the team until it became a 15-4 defeat. In the ride home, Alex was clearly frustrated with how he had done. He was the pitcher that hit two kids, that dropped two of the three pop flies while playing left field. He wasn't the only one to make mistakes or to be frustrated. The next event for Alex's team is Friday's practice. I'd like to think that each player, including Alex, can find a way to set aside the game last night and to focus on the next game.
Another team that needs to do the same type of searching is the Indiana Pacers. For the second year in a row, they are in the NBA Eastern finals against the Miami Heat. The portion of the game I saw was a lot like Alex's baseball game. There were simple mistakes - bad passes, missed easy shots - that seemed to frustrate Indiana as Miami's LeBron James took over, like he normally does in a basketball game. As he imposed his will by dribbling around players and driving to the rim without any Indiana player able to stop him, what was an Indiana lead evaporated into a Miami Heat 10 point lead. The next event for the Indiana Pacers is their game 3 in Miami. I'd like to think that each player can find a way to set aside the game last night and to focus on the next game.

Keeping Pace
It was about a decade ago when I really liked the Indiana Pacers. I liked the fact that Larry Bird was the head coach and even more, I liked their point guard Reggie Miller. I liked the way their offense flowed. I remember wearing my Indiana Pacers hat when I went to Memphis in May in 2004. A few people commented on my hat - the team wasn't a household name like they are this year. The Indiana Pacers are having an absolutly amazing year. They have just now signed Andrew Bynum who was traded from Chicago to Cleveland and, now, he will be on the Pacers for the remainder of this season. I cannot envision the Indiana Pacers winning the NBA Championship in 2014 *unless* they integrate Bynum into the flow of their offense. Time will tell if that can happen between now and the end of the NBA season.

Disgraceful
When the 7th game of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals is being played, the score should never ever be 92 - 68 with less than 4 minutes left in the game. It should be a close game, with the teams trading buckets.
Better luck next year Indiana Pacers. I will cheer for you again.

Pacers Baby!
Out of the woodwork, there will be a lot of Indiana Pacers "longtime fans" who, after defeating the Miami Heat last night in the Eastern division of the NBA finals, will begin filling the Internet with their long-suppressed love for the team that has tied their series at 2-2. While I don't walk around with Indiana Pacers t-shirts or talk relentlessly about the merits of Paul George, West, and others, I have been a fan for quite a few years. At least back to when Reggie Miller was playing and lighting up the court with Jamaal Tinsley. I remember, distinctly, wearing my Indiana Pacers hat to Memphis in May 2003 and, distinctly, how that was going to ensure I would never be forgotten in a business that rotates hundreds, if not thousands of people, a year in Memphis. The waitress told me she would never forget me because I had an Indiana Pacers hat on while she served me on one of the nights during that Memphis in May trip.
Fast forward to 2013 and the Indiana Pacers rebounded from being blown out on their home court in game 3. They also had suffered a heartbreaking OT loss when their defense fell apart and LeBron James easily cake walked through the lane to slam dunk the ball with time expiring. They had terrible help defense and awful decision-making in that game.
Last night, I watched the game laying on our bed, toggling between "The Karate Kid" (remake) and the game. At one point, Indiana had built a huge lead, only to watch James nail some shots that were nothing short of outlandishly impressive. There were two terrible calls where the ball, clearly, touched the rim, but the shot clock did not reset, which resulted in a shot clock violation, as well as when the officials said an Indiana player touched the ball, even though (of course) he could be seen on television saying "I didn't touch it!" His pleas to the officials fell on deaf ears.
Anyways, Indiana did find a way to win. LeBron James fouled out for the first time in nearly a year - who knew he was that clean of a player? - and he had to watch the game from the bench during the last few plays of the game. Indiana won the game and today, it feels good.
Now, however, the series goes to game 5 and Miami, without checking, I think game 6 is in Miami as well. It's entirely likely that the Miami Heat will regroup and be ready to play.

Indy is Done
The Indiana Pacers were playing the Chicago Bulls in the NBA playoffs. Indiana won the fourth game in the series to avoid a sweep by the #1 seed Bulls. According to the article I read, the Indiana Pacers didn't have a very welcoming environment, which doesn't make sense to me. Anyways, Tuesday was the 5th game in their series in Chicago and the Bulls won. I have only had a cursory interest in the NBA this year and the fact that the Pacers are out does not surprise me. They are but a shell of the team that played their way into the championship portion of the season a few years back. They had Reggie Miller, Jamal Tinsley, Ron Artest, and a slew of other really good players. They are all gone now, for whatever reason, and now the Bulls, Boston, Los Angeles, and other teams have the talent pool very deep on their roster. Eventually, though, Indiana will probably bring in very talented players and make another run at the championship of the league. I certainly wish them luck.
