Why I Used to Want to be a Photographer - Mark Weiss Guy

For Immediate Release
September 11, 2020

World-Renowned Photographer Mark “WEISSGUY” Weiss’s The Decade That Rocked is Being Celebrated with an Exhibit at Monmouth Museum

Mark Weiss: The Decade that Rocked! Will Run Through November 1
Following the release of world-renowned rock ‘n’ roll photographer Mark Weiss’s The Decade That Rocked book, the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft, NJ, is now featuring a Mark Weiss: The Decade That Rocked! Exhibit.

Mark Weiss: The Decade That Rocked! showcases onstage and backstage moments and never-before-seen images from the period’s most historic concerts, tours and multiplatinum album covers, all captured through Weiss’s lens. The exhibit also features memorabilia from his private collection and will take visitors through Weiss’s journey on his path to becoming one of the most iconic and celebrated photographers in rock ‘n’ roll.

“We are very excited to have Mark Weiss’s work at the Monmouth Museum,” says Monmouth Museum’s Donna Kessinger. “The show is a snapshot of music history.”

A sold-out opening reception will take place this Saturday, September 12. The reception will feature a performance by members of White Tiger, the first metal band Weiss did a photo session with, fronted by Neal Thomas and guitarist Dan Muro, the legendary band that dominated the early ‘80s Jersey club scene. The pair will perform as The Killin’ Floor Project with noted producer, engineer and owner of Long Branch, NJ’s Shorefire Recording Studios Joe DeMaio.

“My goal is to take this exhibit across the country and speak about my life as a rock ‘n’ roll photographer,” Weiss says. “I have worked on this book for the past five years and now it’s time to share my photos and experiences with the world.”

Mark Weiss: The Decade That Rocked! will run through November 1, with Weiss making appearances at the exhibition on select Fridays beginning on September 18. Visit www.monmouthmuseum.org for tickets and for additional information check out www.thedecadethatrocked.com All visitors will receive a choice of a centerfold of Vince Neil or the Slippery When Wet girl with their $10 entrance donation.
Mark “Weissguy” Weiss got his start in photography as a teen in the 1970s in Matawan, NJ. After getting his first camera in trade for mowing a neighbor's lawn for the summer, Weiss began sneaking into concerts, and the rest is quite literally rock ‘n’ roll history. He has traveled the globe photographing legends from Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith and Mötley Crüe to Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi and KISS. Weiss’s iconic images capture the artists onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes. He documented historic events including the US Festival, Live Aid, the Moscow Music Peace Festival, and the PMRC hearings in Washington, DC. His photographs have been published in thousands of magazines worldwide, and he is responsible for two of the era’s defining album covers, Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and Twisted Sister’s Stay Hungry. His inimitable photographs helped craft the visual imagery of rock and metal in the 1980s and beyond.

The Decade That Rocked, released in June, is now in its second print run and boasts over 500 five-star reviews on Amazon. Weiss has appeared on Australia’s Today show and has been featured in The Washington Post, The Daily Beast and Rolling Stone in support of the book.

Who? Answer is Pat the Panther

Received this email from Maria at Adrenaline PR today at 9:05 AM:

Tengger Cavalry Guitarist PAT REILLY Reveals Video for “Dracarys” from Debut Solo Album, “Path to Transcendence”

Guitarist PAT REILLY (aka Pat the Panther) has revealed a new visualizer video for “Dracarys,” the Game of Thrones-inspired track from his solo album, Path to Transcendence.

Check out the song:

Path to Transcendence, released independently on January 3, is the first solo offering the from the Tengger Cavalry guitarist. REILLY credits late Tengger Cavalry frontman Nature Ganganbaigal as the inspiration behind bringing this solo album to fruition.

“The creation of this album was set in motion largely a result of a conversation that Nature and I had,” REILLY says. “Nature called me up one day early last year for the purpose of telling me that if I put out a full-length album, he would pay for half of the costs and release it under his label. Although I had always wanted to put out an album, I never really mustered up the drive or motivation to go through the process. It almost felt out of reach since I was basically on my own as a solo artist. This conversation with Nature really lit a fire under me, sending me into creative overdrive.”

REILLY went the way many independent musicians, running a successful Kickstarter campaign that largely covered the cost of the album, while spending hours writing, recording, producing and mastering the tracks. Aside from guest drummers and vocalists, Path to Transcendence is completely self-produced, written, performed and engineered. “It wasn't long after my Kickstarter ended that we found out Nature had passed,” REILLY adds. “I wish he could hear the final result of what he set in motion.”

An accomplished musician, REILLY has played several hundred shows throughout the United States, Canada and Europe with Tengger Cavalry, Through the Discipline, Vajra, and Awaken, most notably performing with Tengger Cavalry at New York City's prestigious Carnegie Hall.

Although REILLY’s musical passions lie in the metal genre, his songwriting is quite diverse, ranging from classically composed intros to full-fledged groove-based metal compositions. While many listeners may consider him a shredder, REILLY prides himself on the emotional element of songwriting and guitar playing rather than purposely being technical.

“I'm passionate about music and the effect it has on the listener,” says REILLY. “When I create music, I'm transcending my physical being into some spiritual in-between. ‘Path to Transcendence’ is inspired by that concept. When I'm listening or writing or otherwise deeply involved in the music, I'm passing into that meditative state. My hope is that I can somewhat bring my listeners the same experience when they listen to ‘Path to Transcendence.’”

M at APR

This is not going to be a topic I write about "every day" - it's merely a coincidence that Maria at Adrenaline Public Relations sent out a press release today.

Before I continue, I should state for the record that I have been receiving press releases from Maria at Adrenaline Public Relations for many years. Early in my days of writing CD reviews, she would send me promo CDs to review. While I think her writing strategy is something that she has used, unwavering since I began reading press releases from Adrenaline, I am attempting to point out why I agree with the writing strategy as well as to document my feelings within a blog post.

In the following screenshot, you can see that Maria's strategy was to include a lot of text and keep links isolated to a single place (towards the end) of the email. I think that was because there isn't anything that has been released from the band - this is a preemptive effort to generate interest in a band's upcoming release.

What's remarkable is that there is a long list clients at the bottom. The following list are the bands that have been clients:
  1. American Idol winner Lee DeWyze
  2. All That Remains
  3. Anthrax
  4. As I Lay Dying
  5. Atreyu
  6. Dethklok/Brendon Small's Galaktikon
  7. DevilDriver
  8. Drowning Pool
  9. Down
  10. Europe
  11. Every Time I Die
  12. Five Finger Death Punch
  13. GWAR
  14. Hank3
  15. Harley Flanagan
  16. Hatebreed
  17. John 5
  18. KMFDM
  19. Lamb of God
  20. Mac Sabbath
  21. Machine Head
  22. Motorhead
  23. Mudvayne
  24. Norma Jean
  25. Otep
  26. Pentakill
  27. Peter Murphy
