How Did the Iowa men's Basketball Team do?

Well? The 2024-2025 season has been over for a week - the NCAA Championship game was on 4-7-2025. On Monday, October 7, 2024, I was cautiously optimistic about the season, per Iowa men’s basketball needs its returning stars to take the next step, so I'm just hoping that the 2024-2025 season turned out better than expected.

IA Loses Again at OSU

Sorry, I don't believe the "Fran doesn't care" statements and I don't believe the "lack of effort" statements either. I don't believe that any kid or coach walks into an arena to not compete. Of course everyone wants to compete!
They looked good in the first half. Then, their shots started to not go in. The response was to run down the floor and launch 3s... except those didn't go in. Like any competitor, OSU capitalized.
I don't blame them for launching 3s - they made 6 of 21 - so that strategy didn't work. Dix went 0 for 7 - so zero points after putting up 31 in an earlier game -- and P Sandfort was 5 for 16 so his shots weren't falling. Should Fran tell Dix and Sandfort to stop launching 3s? I am not a coach but I've heard announcers talk about shooting your way out of a slump. Is that an outdated idea?
Basketball is a game of makes & misses. OSU had more makes; IA had more misses. They have Purdue and then WI at home before heading out east for Rutgers & MD. My hope is that IA gets 2 wins at home and the mentality that it really doesn't matter what building they are playing in - they have the ability to win on the road. They have to find that mentality for any tournament(s) they want to play in after Sunday, 3-9, at NE.

Iowa men’s basketball needs its returning stars to take the next step

It's easy for me to get amnesia when I think about the Iowa men's basketball team coming into the 2024-2025 season. I vaguely remember being frustrated during the 2023-2024 season and (maybe) losing some games that should have been won, though that could be also based upon the legacy of the Iowa men's basketball team from previous seasons. All I know is that I will cheer for the team this year and hope that they have a lot of Ws at the end of the season!

Is it Iowa mens basketball season yet?!?

Go Hawks! Their season kicks off with four games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena:
  • Fri-Oct 25-Men's Basketball vs. Minnesota Duluth (EXH)
  • Mon Nov 4 Texas_A and M–Commerce
  • Thu Nov 7 Southern University
  • Tue Nov 12 South Dakota

For the past 5 years, I always think about getting season tickets for the mens games... and I never have bitten the bullet and done it.
This article is from July. Look at the structure of the URL - it has 2024, followed by a slash, then a 7, followed by a slash, then a 10, followed by a slash. The issue I have with this structure is that you will never actually have the months line up in chronological order because the 7 should be 07 to deal with the "10" for October, the "11" for November, and the "12" for December. Yes, little piddly crap like that gnaw at me on a daily basis.

For the first time in the better part of a decade, the Iowa Hawkeyes are poised to start a basketball season with only the head coach bearing the last name McCaffery. In today’s world of transfer portal madness and NIL funding, the Hawkeyes lost a trio of players to the portal after last year’s 19-15 finish, including coach McCaffery’s middle son Patrick. Pat (Butler) was joined in departing by PG Dasonte Bowen (St. Bonaventure) and Tony Perkins (Mizzou).

Remembering the High Hopes

Remember October 2022? There have been 182 days - 6 months - since 10-12-2022 when I posted a link to a Daily Iowan article and so it feels like today is a good day to revisit this article: https://prhmusic.blogspot.com/2022/10/iowa-mens-basketball-guard-tony-perkins.html.
The Final Four for the 2022-2023 season finished 9 days (1 week, 2 days) ago so I should know on 4-12-2023 whether Tony Perkins had a fantastic junior season.

Now that the 2022-2023 Season is Over

On 3-31-2022, the big news surrounding the Iowa Hawkeyes mens basketball team was that Keegan Murray was leaving the team to go to the NBA, JT was leaving the team to enter the transfer portal, and Josh Ogundule was entering the transfer portal. It was unknown whether Fran would be successful in attracting a 5 (we used to call the position a "center") from the transfer portal to the team. It was also unknown how these 3 departures, as well as the departure of Jordan Bohannon, would impact the team.

Today is 4-1-2023. I am guessing that the NCAA Tournament is nearing completion and, sadly, that even if my Hawks made the NCAA Tournament, they have been eliminated. Thus, I would have liked to revisit this article from a year ago, but I cannot because I do not subscribe, nor will I ever subscribe, to the Iowa City Press-Citizen. Here's the post from 4-1-2022, https://prhmusic.blogspot.com/2022/03/fran-talks-2022-2023-season.html, which is a link to https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/columnists/chad-leistikow/2022/03/30/iowa-basketball-retool-transfer-portal-key-returning-players-kris-murray-fran-mccaffery-recruiting/7201540001, which leads to a "You Can't Read This" page.

So, I guess, I'll speculate on the 2022-2023 season and state:

  1. Iowa will be surprised by the level of success they achieve.
    However...
  2. Iowa will not win the Big Ten Championship.
  3. Iowa will not win the NCAA Championship.

That's about all I can say.

Not the Result I was Wanting

This will be a recap of the 2022-2023 season with a bit of optimism about the 2023-2024 team. First, the bad news: Iowa lost yesterday.

While this loss is not the result any Iowa Hawkeye fan was wanting, the team that lost this game will only lose two seniors - Connor McCaffery

Career Bests

Points: 19 vs. Connecticut, 11/16/18
Rebounds: 13 vs. Michigan, 1/17/20

and Filip Lebracha - when the 2023-2024 team takes the court. Assuming no one leaves the team, I predict the starting 5 will be

  3. Payton Sandfort
  4. Kris Murray
  5. Patrick McCaffery
