Terrible Advice that is True

I was reminded of both working at Quintrex as well as working with the Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa when I read Page Ranges in a TOC this morning, which says the following:

Colin asked if it is possible to construct a table of contents so it includes not just a starting page number, but a range of page numbers. For instance, the table of contents would include 1-1 to 1-22 instead of just 1-1.

Unfortunately, this is not possible in Word. The table of contents feature is designed to only include starting page numbers. It would appear that this decision is related to the fact that determining a starting page number is easy (it is the page on which the related heading starts), but an ending page number for a section is not as easily determined. Where a section ends depends on what headings you instruct Word to include in the TOC.

If you want page ranges in your TOC, the only way to get them is to manually enter the TOC and not rely on Word to create one automatically.

When I worked at Quintrex, BSS was my co-worker. He used to write documentation in Microsoft Word.

One day, he showed me that how he created a table of contents for one of his documents.

For each section that he wanted to have included in the table of contents, he selected the text and clicked Insert > Bookmark. He repeated this process for each heading throughout his document.

Then, on the table of contents page, he typed the name of each bookmark - he did not use any Word styles in his document - typed the leader dots [.....], then the page number. After typing the page number, he selected the page number and clicked Insert > Hyperlink and selected a heading in his document. He repeated this process for each heading in his document.

Thankfully, when he showed me his process, I was able to show him how to insert a TOC field which automatically builds the table of contents.

I chuckle about it now. When I left Quintrex to go to the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa, the tool that was being used for one of the user guides was InDesign. In context, InDesign is typically used by a marketing department to create short (generally, under 10 pages) documents. However, at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa, InDesign was being used for a (roughly) 150 page user guide. The Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa followed a similar process of manually creating the table of contents for that 150 page user guide. In fact, the Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa went a step further and printed the entire 150 page user guide to manually verify that the page number in the table of contents matched the actual page in the body of the document. The Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa went further to brag about staying at work until midnight on the night before the new version of the 150 page user guide was due, providing details of printing the 150 page user guide multiple times which, to me, proved that the process followed by Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa was ... stupid. It was an absolutely terrible process and to brag about being required to be working on the 150 page user guide until midnight beautifully illustrates how the process was a broken process and the utter and complete incompetence of that Senior Technical Writer at the Unnamed Hellhole in southern Iowa.

It is good advice to tell someone (Colin) that the intended goal is dumb. If you really want to know when a section ends, look at the table of contents. For example, look at this table of contents:

Section 1............... 1

Section 2............... 15

You can see that Section 1 starts on page 1 and Section 2 begins on page 15. That tells someone looking at the table of contents that Section 1 is 14 pages (pages 1 through 14). As a side note, I'd add that I've never seen a table of contents that shows a page range for a section. It is always good advice to tell someone (Colin) that the intended goal of what you want to do is unattainable. As it is written, the author of Page Ranges in a TOC made me think of two former co-workers who manually created a table of contents, which is wrong.

WWE Causes a Trip to be Taken

I don't think that pro wrestling - specifically, the WWE - do segments like this one from 2005 anymore. The title of the video is Kurt Angle, HBK, John Cena, Edge, Lita, & Big Show Carlito's Cabana Segment - RAW 10-10-2005 and it's a good segment. In modern times, it seems like the scope of "who" is going to contend for a championship is, in general, limited to one other person. In the segment embedded below, five WWE Superstars are in the ring, each claiming they deserve a championship match with John Cena. Cena doesn't make his appearance until towards the end of the segment, which is when his mic skills shine. He "criticizes" each of the 5 in the ring, including the ultimate scorching of Edge's girlfriend Lita with 4 words: Lita... you're a slut. When I was watching this segment in 2022, I burst out laughing at that line.Watch the video below.

Part I

https://youtu.be/ -hbUAkItp84 - (I think this is Part I - I couldn't find "Carlito's Cabana with Big Show, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Edge & John Cena 1/2 (WWE RAW) HD | 2005"

Part II

https://youtu.be/ 70V-LXxfKjs - Carlito's Cabana with Big Show, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, Edge & John Cena 2/2 (WWE RAW) HD | 2005

So that segment is from October 2005. I can tell you that in October 2005, I lived in our current house and we were approaching our 1 year anniversary of doing so, which was going to be December 2005.

Want to know how my brain works when determining if I can write the following sentence:

I can tell you that in October 2005, I lived in our current house and we were approaching our 1 year anniversary of doing so, which was going to be December 2005.

It may be what other people do but I start with a major milestone in life and work my way forward. The milestone I use is 2004.

  • 2004 was the Memphis in May concert that I went to with Phil, Jamie, and Serbi, which was then followed with seeing Godsmack open for Metallica in August 2004 in Moline and the reason I know it was in Moline is because my godson's birthday party was that same day in Blue Grass, IA, and I had arranged to have Serbi and ... hmmm.... You know, I don't remember who else was in our group that day.
    • I remember that I had arranged to meet my group at the Walcott Truck Stop so that I could ride with the group to the concert. Fast forward a bit, and I can say that I know that it was at this concert when Serbi told me that he and his wife were going to get a divorce. Their 11th wedding anniversary was going to be in 11 days, on 9-4-2004. In general, I would remember nothing about this concert if I had not purchased the live recording of it on https://www.livemetallica.com/live-music/0,62/Metallica-mp3-flac-download-8-22-2004-Mark-of-the-Quad-Cities-Moline-IL.html
      • And the reason I know we moved into our current house in December 2004 is because when I went to Memphis in May 2004, Phil, Serbi, and Jamie picked me up at our old house.
  • 2005 was the year Karen, Megan, Alex, Lou, Jean, and I went to Disney.
    • And the reason I know we had moved into our current house in December 2004 is because when we went to Disney, the 6 of us left our current house and drove to Dave's house in Blue Grass because he was taking us to the Quad Cities Airport for our flight. To continue along this path, I remember that we took a later flight that morning and because we had agreed to take a later flight, Allegiant Airlines gave us 6 flight vouchers, which is a key detail for how I remember the events of 2006.

See how I did that? I used a major event in my life to work forward to where I wanted to end up. I can keep going:

  • 2006 was the year Karen, Lou, Jean, Dave, Chris, and I used the 6 flight vouchers from the Disney trip in 2005 to go to the Grand Bahamas.
  • 2007 was the Memphis in May concert that I went to with Phil, Kevin, and BSS. We took Phil's Honda Element, which was a very awesome orange car and the play was to be picked up at our current house.
    • I remember more about when I was dropped off than when I was picked up because I had bought a t-shirt for Karen in Memphis and a birthday card for Karen's birthday at a Wal-Mart along the way home, which was unimpressive to the birthday girl.
  • 2008 was the year that doesn't really jump out at me for having any huge milestones except that Karen planned a surprise party on my 39th birthday in December. That turned out to be a good thing because...
  • 2009 was the year I turned 40 and was actually in UIHC as a patient for pneumonia on my 40th birthday. It was also the year that Megan tipped over a golf cart in Elkader because, as I was in my hospital bed in December 2009, Karen and I were discussing a bill we had received from the Elkader Country Club to pay for damages to the golf cart.

So that is how my brain works.

About my Post-C-19 World Part II

After only exchanging text messages and scattered phone calls for over a year, I finally saw BSS, my friend who I met when we both worked at Quintrex, at the Tin Roost in North Liberty. The Tin Roost was rocking. Not only was "Flash in the Pan" playing on the patio, it seemed like it was a pure party. In addition to BSS, I talked to:

  1. Fred & Julie
  2. the Kleinows
  3. too many acquaintances and friends from church and from Regina to list individually
  4. Megan

Yes, even Megan, my daughter, was at the Tin Roost.

Said Goodbye Yesterday to CES

The father of my friend referred to on this blog as BSS passed away last week. Karen and I drove to Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion, IA, for the wake. My mind often tries to recall my past interactions with the deceased on a drive to a wake or funeral and in Calvin's case, I truly believe I interacted with him twice. The first time was when I helped him move from a house in southwest Cedar Rapids to a house in northeast Cedar Rapids. The second time was at BSS's wedding. May his soul be granted eternal peace and may comfort find his family and friends as they mourn the emptiness he filled during his time on earth.
Calvin Earl Struchen, 77, of Toddville, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, at his home. A Parish Vigil Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. A visitation will follow the vigil service until 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha.

Scary & Dinner

No, not "Boo!" scary, but scary as in "I really need to get a new EHD to offload data from the G: EHD" scary.
I'm in the process of moving 35,925 items (6.80 GB) from the c:\rh-backup folder to a network drive to increase the free space on the C: drive, so that's good. I had actually thought about swinging through Staples last night in SW Cedar Rapids when I was in Cedar Rapids to have dinner with BSS, a friend I've known for 20 years - we worked together at Quintrex and if I had never left Quintrex, my 20 year anniversary would have been on October 1, 2018 - since we were meeting at Buffalo Wild Wings. The Staples store is not more than a 1/2 mile from the restaurant. When I arrived at the restaurant earlier than expected, though, I chose to just be early and not risk being late by running down to Staples and buying a new EHD. I also thought about how I could stop at Wal-Mart on the way back home since I knew I was going to drive past it, but then, I didn't.

Since I mentioned dinner with BSS, I must say it was excellent. I had not seen him physically since February of 2016, when we had met for lunch at the Burger King down the road from where Quintrex used to be located - he looked good. We talked about our lives, which naturally included our kids, our recent experiences of helping loved ones with cancer, our jobs, our political views (which we found out are fairly aligned with each other), our faith lives, and our general outlook on life. We met at 5 and I didn't leave the restaurant until shortly before 8 and, even then, I think we could have sat and talked until midnight. It was the kind of conversation that you leave with a new sense of energy about life and a "I'm not alone on this journey through all the things going on in life" feeling - a lot of what BSS said were things I might have said first, if prompted. I shared a lot of thoughts with him that I've wrote about in my private journal, which I think reveals the depth of our conversation.

The UX Unicorn

Whenever I think about UX, I think about the designing "Windows Screens" work I did at Quintrex. I remember I did not embrace the work when first presented to me. I thought it was work I wouldn't be good at and that any hours I spent doing that work meant less hours in the work week for the technical writing work I felt like I needed to get done. Vividly, I remember calculating how many hours were in my backlog of technical writing work. In order to make my changes to the documentation prior to the deadline, it would take a miracle. Yet, somehow, I got the work done. I feel good about how I was actually able to balance the two full-time jobs. Sometimes, it was stressful, but overall, I think I was successful. That's why when I read this article - Complementing Your UX Skillset with Business Analysis - it was this quote that resonated within me:

A UX unicorn is someone who can deliver broadly on the UX skillset, plus something else that most would consider rare—though perhaps not mythical, as the term unicorn might imply!

I felt like a unicorn because I was relying upon my technical writing skills in order to deliver UX, if that makes sense. I have no formal training in UX so every thing I learned, I learned from listening and researching and experimenting. I also relied heavily upon BSS, my friend.

And, because it's related, remember how happy I was on Monday about a potential moonlighting gig? No? Well here's a refresher:

I spoke with the recruiter and he told me that the client changed their mind about going forward, deciding to try out someone internally. While I'm disappointed, I also have the faith in God to realize that it wasn't His plan for me to do that work. It was my plan and all things are done according to His plan. Getting the courtesy call from the recruiter was a reminder of that truth in my life.

Briefing

Yesterday AM, I was up early writing in my 10 year project. The journal project is where I have assigned a month/year combination to a section in one of 24 200 page spiral notebooks. Currently, I'm writing in Volume X, section 03. I began writing on page 55 of 82 @ 6:15 AM and wrote 7 pages. When we got back from the wedding in Marion (details below), I wrote another 3 pages. While I typically begin a section on the first of the month and finish it on the last day of the month, I wrote some long essays in the June section to the extent that I began this current section on 6/23/15. As we are on vacation the last week in July and spending it in Elkader, I had already decided I wanted to finish the July section by Thursday, July 23, so that when we leave home, I can bring the August volume with me. I'm now revising that idea. Because I'm on page 66, with 16 pages remaining in this section, the new plan is to be able to begin the August 2015 section on Friday, July 17, which is the first day of a three day weekend in Elkader.

Also, yesterday, I've seen deer before at the campground in Elkader. As I was writing in the aforementioned journal, I looked out the window and saw this guy.

Then, I opened a second blind that was covering the other window. I think the deer was looking into my soul.

Then a second one appeared and went into the woods.

Then, I showered and got dressed. Karen and I went to the wedding of BSS and LeAnn at Squaw Creek in Marion. This is the only picture I took.

We sat with my former co-workers at Quintrex - Deb (former manager), Phil and his wife Liz. When Liz worked at QDS in Customer Support years ago, I used to pepper our internal documentation with the word "automagically" and while we were eating, she said that she had seen that word somewhere and began to chuckle about it. I admit I had kind of forgot about how I used to use that word. It was my sarcastic dig at the adjective "automatically" being used to describe the functionality in the systems I documented. There is nothing "automatic" about software, in my mind, because a developer wrote the code to do whatever the software does. It may automate manual tasks, such as when you enter a zip code and the city & state are completed, sure. My point, though, is that's performing a task that you would have to do manually. Maybe it's splitting hairs.

Anyways, it was a good conversation. I heard a little about the current scuttle at QDS. As I listened, I couldn't help but think about how the situations I heard being described sounded vaguely familiar. I'm not going to go into detail here because it doesn't really matter what I heard about in that conversation. My point is that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

So, now with the recap of yesterday complete, right now, at this moment, it's 7:35 AM on Sunday, July 12, 2015. I'm sitting in Lou & Jean's sunroom in Balltown. We came from Elkader yesterday in order to see the Balltown fireworks. Among many highlights, I finally got to climb up the TV antenna onto Lou & Jean's roof. Alex had been launching bottle rockets and one of them was carried by the wind onto the roof. Attempts to spray water onto the roof in order to get it to roll down were unsuccessful so up I went. Alex had tried to climb up but got to the roof level and doubted his ability to complete the task.

I took some video of last night:

Last year, I took a lot more videos and a lot more pictures, but I don't think I've watched that video or looked at those pictures. Ever. Thus, I decided I wasn't going to take as much video or take as many pictures.

WM XXIV

I didn't want my post re: the Sueppels to be my only post, so I'm adding this one.

Wrestlemania XXIV is tomorrow. My friend BSS asked if I wanted to come over and watch it. I'm considering it - my knee seems better. I think it will be an interesting PPV, but I refuse to go match by match. I will say that I don't think Cena will win. I think it has to either be Orton or HHH. Cena is no longer the crowd favorite - in my ears - so it doesn't make sense to put the title back on him.

As I mentioned, my knee is better. I worked a 1/2 day yesterday and came home and took a nap. I was going to watch "Live Free or Die Hard" again but gave up, pulled a blanket up, and snoozed for a couple of hours.

Got 3 CDs last night for me to review @ DV - 16 Second Stare, Whitesnake's new release, and Everclear's comp of the covers they've recorded over the years. 16SS and Everclear were the two I wanted to hear first, and now I'm spinning the 'snake. The first track "Best Years" has a good groove. Coverdale has Reb Breach and Doug Aldrich playing guitar and drummer Chris Frazier in the lineup. I've always liked Breach's riffs, so it will be interesting to hear how this release progresses in my mind.

I signed up for a meet and greet with one of my favorite bands but since I don't want YOU to win, I'm not revealing how or where to sign up - I WANT TO WIN! I'm not even saying when the concert is or even in what state it is in. NO CLUES!!! Sorry for the selfishness, but I deserve it, no?

Editor's Note: these are the results of WM XXIV: WrestleMania XXIV
