Port-Haak-Smit

All of these videos could have been a standalone post on their own merits, but they're collected as one because there is a common thread that unites them. See below the 5th video for the reason these 3 drummers belong together.

As for the drummers themselves, two need no introduction: Mike Portnoy and Chad Smith. The third, Tomas Haake does. He is the drummer for Meshuggah, a band that is playing on the Friday night of Chicago Open Air 2017 in July 2017. There are many bands I need to bone up on prior to July 2017 and Meshuggah is one of those bands.

The reason these 3 drummers belong together is that they are all Sabian cymbal endorsers.
And here's another fun fact. If I had seen the video below, I likely would not have sought to hear any Meshuggah tunes.

Editor's Note: Because of embedding the two videos of Tomas Haake playing drums, the "Meshuggah" tag has been added to this blog. Because of embedding the video of Mike Portnoy playing an Adrenaline Mob tune, the "Adrenaline Mob" tag has been added to this blog.

Weekend Wrap Up in 15 Links to Elsewhere

Because I was in Elkader over the weekend and because the Blogger app on my phone is unreliable, I sent a bunch of emails to myself with links to interesting thinks I didn't want to forget today, Monday, 9/26/2016. There is no organization to the following list - don't bother trying to understand the order.

No, That's Not Me

“Hey, you’re the guys from Metallica!” ‘No, we’re the Red Hot Chili Peppers!’ “You can’t fool us; you’re definitely Metallica! Sign this?” The conversation between the Red Hot Chili Peppers and customs agents in a Belarus airport must have gone something like that as the band were mistaken for thrash titans Metallica and forced to sign memorabilia.

It's Called a Love Affair with Big Minds

Last week, I mentioned that Kobe Bryant played his final NBA game, as described here. What didn't make my radar was that Flea, the bassist for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, played the "Star Spangled Banner" during the pre-game. Apparently, there was a lot of backlash concerning his performance. What I found interesting was that if you search youtube.com for other videos of Flea playing the tune, he has played it previously, in the same arena. I watched him play the tune on the trumpet.

My point is that this was not the very first time he's ever played the tune on his bass in that venue. Perhaps what was different from the prior times and this last time is that people tuned in to watch Bryant's final game who didn't know who Flea is, what his history is with the Lakers, and that, like it or not and believe it or not, the way he played the tune was not all that different from when he played it in 2013.

All of that paragraph is meant to set up Flea's reaction. When asked what he thought of it - and I love this quote - this is what he said:

I really don’t have any concern for little small minds that get frustrated when they get blown . . . I like big minds.

No Cord on the Guitar?

It started with Living Colour's Vernon Reid noticing that the guitar being used by the Red Hot Chilli Pepper's guitarist wasn't plugged into anything [http://loudwire.com/living-colour-guitarist-vernon-reid-red-hot-chili-peppers-super-bowl-performance/] and then became something the Peppers' Flea had to address as message boards and Twitter lit up with questions.

If I was asked to play drums on a stage in front of Super Bowl crowd, damn right I would. I don't blame the RHCP for their choice to do the halftime show whatsoever!
