Was 2025 an Odd-Time Drumming Year?

Since 2025 is an odd-numbered year, I have decided that one of my goals (not a New Year's Resolution) is to work on my ability to play drums in an odd-time, meaning, not in "4/4" or "3/4" or "6/8" - those are the primary time signatures of the tunes that I play when I play drums, whether it is with Bad Rumor or at Saint Thomas More. The video below is 18:00 long and by Nate at the 80/20 Drummer. It's only 1-2-2025 and there's 363 days (11 months, 4 weeks, 1 day) until the end of this year. I'm going to create a reminder post that will be published on 12-31-2025 with a link back to this post. I'll predict right now that on 12-31-2025, I have NOT spent a lot of time on my odd-time drumming. There, I said it. https://www.the8020drummer.com/blog/odd-meters - The "Ultimate Guide" to Odd Meters on Drums

Improve my Drumming in Only 90 Minutes for 87 Bucks

https://www.dimitrifantinidrums.com/handspeedmasterclass?cid=933a07b8-1f2d-450d-8634-62c7920eaae3 - The Real Reason Your Hand Speed Hits a Wall (And How to Smash Through It)

From the website:

Struggling to break through your speed barriers?

You practice your rudiments religiously. You've tried every speed-building exercise on YouTube. But when it comes time to play fast, your hands cramp up, your technique falls apart, and you hit a wall.

Sound familiar?

Trying to play fast without proper technique is like flooring the gas pedal with your brakes on. You're working twice as hard to go half as fast, and something's going to break.

But your drumming doesn't have to be this way.

Discover how to unlock lightning-fast hand speed that feels effortless:

  • Break through speed plateaus that have held you back for months (or years)
  • Learn why "practicing faster" is actually slowing you down
  • Master the technique secrets that separate sloppy slow-pokes from speed demons
  • Build speed that feels controlled, clean, and completely natural
  • Transform your hands into precision speed machines on autopilot

Here's the truth most drummers never learn:

The fastest drummers in the world aren't just naturally gifted – they understand the Hand Speed Formula that transforms all those rudiments into blazing fast fills.

After working with hundreds of drummers, I've cracked the code on what separates drummers who struggle to play fast from those who make lightning speed look effortless.

I've distilled it all into a proven system that:

  • Programs lightning-fast speed directly into your muscle memory
  • Eliminates the tension that kills your speed
  • Builds speed that actually improves your technique
  • Creates the fluid, effortless feel you hear in your favorite drummers

Keni Richards was Murdered

This story was published 8 years ago and it was how I learned that the drummer for Autograph, whose most popular tune was called Turn up the Radio, (released on September 27, 1984) was actually murdered. I was really sad when I read about his death. No, of course, I didn't know him or anything like that. I was sad when I read the final paragraphs of the story:
Keni was a great guy. He was dealing with depression. He was going to come out here and move, and you know, this happened and there are no answers. Keni wanted me to post something on Facebook and I never did. He wanted to know if the fans really cared about him and loved him. He said that he didn’t really think that he made a difference in people’s lives. He was struggling with that and wanted me to find out how many people really cared about him and what he meant to them. He shared with me some great stories about the Motley Crue tour and David Lee Roth, and you know, he had done a lot of things after Autograph. I miss my friend all the time. I have so many messages [from him that] I still listen to today. I pray every day that they will find the people who did this. He was doing a painting for me before this happened. Miss you Keni! R.I.P. my friend. Much love to you and your family.”

So, here's the tune that I first heard with Keni Richards' drumming.

But here's the deal. While that tune is the one that everyone knows, the best tune on their debut album Sign in Please is called My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me. There's something about the title of this tune, the actual guitars and drums of this tune, and, of course, the lyrics of this tune that make it an absolute gem. It is track 6 on the album which, on a cassette tape, probably meant it would be the first tune on Side B. I will never forget what I felt when I saw him playing drums for the first time. He had a double bass set with only one tom between the bass drums - I couldn't see how many floor toms he had but I always assumed there were at least 2 floor toms. It was a radical idea, in 1984-ish, to only have a single rack tom and it made his set unique from, say, Tommy Lee in Motley Crue. His set during the Shout at the Devil era (that album was released on September 23, 1983) was a double bass, but with two rack toms with his two bass drums and had been released nearly a year earlier than Autograph's debut album.
