Va-Cay-Tion!

I am on vacation until Wednesday, July 5th, which is when I return to work. This is the schedule I know about as of this moment:
  • Friday - drive to Elkader
  • Saturday - see "Wonder Woman" in the Elkader Theater, go to 4 PM Mass, eat supper
  • Sunday - Lou & Jean are going to Bob & Mary Lou's 90th birthday party in Dubuque; unsure what Karen, Alex, Megan, and I are doing.
  • Monday - Lou & Jean & Karen are going to Lou's doctor appointment in Dubuque; unsure what Alex, Megan, and I are doing. I had thought about going golfing but with 3 of us, that wouldn't really work out well.
  • Tuesday - Lou & Jean & Karen & Megan & Alex & I are going to the Garnavillo 4th of July parade. It starts at 10 AM and, traditionally, we leave from Elkader around 9 AM to get a good seat. Sometime after the parade, we'll likely pack up and return to North Liberty - most likely prior to any local to North Liberty area fireworks beginning.
  • Wednesday - Karen & I return to work; unsure what Alex & Megan have planned.
It will be a busy weekend. I have nothing planned other than 'going with the flow' and seeing the "Wonder Woman" movie. We can see it not in 3D at the following times:
Saturday - noon
Sunday - 3:30; 7:00
It looks like a movie called "Megan Leavey" might be the next movie:

And what would my life be without finding errors on websites. On the "Reserving Seats" page - http://www.elkadercinema.com/page/5210/Reserving-Seats - I found this:

Yes, I used the "Contact Us" page to tell them about it.
Editor's Note: This is a reminder to check the "Reserving Seats" page on Wednesday, July 5th, to verify the typo has been corrected and that there is a link (or that the "click here" text has been removed).

Now I have to listen to the entire TFFL album.

Trip to Mulberry Street Tomorrow

I had planned to go to the post office or Walgreens (or ANYWHERE) that sells stamps over my lunch hour. That didn't happen. I got my hair cut and that took longer than expected. Thus, I will go to the Elkader post office tomorrow AM between 9:30 and 11 to get the 60 stamps Alex needs for his graduation party thank you notes.

This song was suddenly in my mind so I had to hear it.

Hey Fox! RUN!

Thank you for 64

From the description:

This Project took 64 hours work. I projected a Storyboard to recapitulate the Prison Break Seasons 1 to 4 in a 4 minutes video footage. Relevant scenes had to be cut down to 3 hours. But i had to realize it is impossible to give an overview of the content in a 4 minutes video, because there are up to 8 strands for every Season. So i decided to concentrate on 3 main characters. I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Brad Bellick was a despised character, but this video takes a song that was used in Rocky III, during a training sequence, for the hero. I thought it was cool how the creator of this video took that song and made it as a video for a 'non-hero."

Good Release Notes

From https://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2017/05/robohelp-2017-update-1.html, just one example (of many choices) as to why I like these release notes:

Export to DocBook: We fixed that nasty error that appeared while exporting a project or topic to DocBook.

The language is conversational and slightly off-the-cuff. How many release notes use an adjective like "nasty" to describe their own bug?

SO TRUE!

Recently, I was revising some documentation at work which was set up as frequently asked questions. I despise that format and it feels like I've wrote about it recently. The reason I despise the format has to do with when I worked at QDS. There was a major procedure - adding a X - to the system. Within a FAQ on the website, the procedure detailed the 17 steps, but within the documentation, there were more steps. I had to resolve, between the two, which was correct. Ultimately, the solution was to remove the FAQ from the website and integrate it within the 'regular' system documentation. Read about FAQs here.

Editor's Note: Dang! This situation has been described somewhere, but a search is coming up empty.

In the Era of the Monster

I rewatched the Metallica documentary "Some Kind of Monster" on Netflix - some on Saturday, 6/24, and some on Sunday, 6/25 - and was reminded of a letter James Hetfield wrote, while in rehab, that was published in their fan club magazine. I wanted to read the entire letter so I found it:

Should be Easier

Passing health care reform is hitting major snags even though Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. Why? From what I've read, it's because the health care reform bill is riddled with issues that are not looking out for the American people. What I find interesting is Obamacare has been around for, what, 8 years, and Republicans have criticized it for, what, 8 years, but now, when presented with a majority in all branches of government, there is not a health care reform bill that can generate support within the Republican party. Read about the issues here:
  1. McConnell Faces Major Road Block In Passing Senate GOP’s Obamacare Repeal Bill
  2. Senate GOP updates health care bill to include 6-month lockout for uninsured
I find all of this fascinating and I will be interested to see what happens next.

Wanting to Break Free

For Paris Garrett, being in a gang meant being with family."It was a new family. Every day I was hanging out with them, and they showed me nothing but love," the 16-year-old said. He met those friends a couple of years ago at school in Des Moines."At that point I was feeling like, whatever it takes, I just wanted to hang," he said. But then Garrett started getting into trouble. He would get into fights, and he said he stole a car with friends. He was arrested twice and had friends die as a result of street violence. So Garrett recently decided he no longer wants a gang lifestyle, he said. He wants to improve."After a while it was starting to feel like it wasn't worth it. They're not really your blood family, once you think about it," he said. "Knowing that you're putting your real family through pain, with your mom crying because you're getting locked up or you're doing something out there that might jeopardize your life — that stuff hurts."

Finding the Path

Soon after Bruce Harreld was selected as president of the University of Iowa in September 2015, there was some talk of him being akin to Professor Harold Hill — the con-man hero in Meredith Willson’s famous musical, “The Music Man.”A former IBM executive whose experience was in strategic planning rather than in university administration, Harreld was dismissed readily by many on campus as, in Willson’s words, “a flim-flam man” who “doesn’t know the territory.”The negative reaction to Harreld was inflamed further by the failures of the Iowa Board of Regents to keep its search process open and transparent. Harreld’s unanimous selection by the board was thought to be the result of behind-the-scenes manipulations of Bruce Rastetter, the agribusinessman who served as regent president until earlier this year.

Remembering the Crippler

They are going to make a movie about Chris Benoit, the WWE superstar that murdered his wife & son in 2007. It is going to be called "Crossface" and be directed by Lexi Alexander. I'm 100% unfamiliar with her work - I haven't seen her films Green Street Hooligans, Punisher: War Zone, and I've never watched a single episode of the many TV series she has been involved in, which are Arrow, Supergirl, and Limitless. I have absolutely ZERO authority to say whether Alexander is a good choice or not for this film.

I do have the authority to say I remembered watching Monday Night Raw after this news came out, though I didn't remember the precise date, which was June 26, 2007 - a decade back from today. This article about his career is a fascinating glimpse into the backstory of what it means to be a WWE superstar. Specifically, this is the paragraph that made me pause and think:

During his 22-year career, Chris Benoit took many “bumps,” as they’re known in the wrestling industry. The innocuous term belies – probably intentionally – just how serious the injuries can be. From chair shots in TLC matches, to lead pipes, stop signs, and God knows what else in Hardcore contests, to botched German suplexes, there are a plethora of ways to sustain head trauma in this business. And they all happened to him. Repeatedly. Many more times, I think, than anyone really knew while he was still alive.

If that passage intrigues you, read the article.

Editor's Note: Having never even mentioned "Chris Benoit" on this blog, a label has been created.

Another Band Skips Iowa

Just noticed this:

MARTY FRIEDMAN will begin a headlining run on August 2 in Philadelphia, PA. Support comes from Houston's top progressive outfit, Scale the Summit, along with Madison, WI's technical progressive three-piece, The Fine Constant. Catch Marty and his Jackson MF-1 models at the following stops:
Marty Friedman - Wall Of Sound Tour 2017
w/ Special Guests Scale The Summit and The Fine Constant

8/10 Reggie's Rock Club, Chicago, IL
8/11 Studio B at the Skyway, Minneapolis, MN
8/12 Sokol Underground, Omaha, NE
8/13 Fubar, St, Louis, MO

I guess I shouldn't feel too bad because The Fine Constant didn't even get a WI date that would serve as a 'homecoming' of sorts on the tour; there is a concert in Houston, TX, to serve as a 'homecoming' gig for Scale the Summit.
This is the first single:

HOLY BUCKETS!!! That is SMOKING!
Scale the Summit sound like this:

The Fine Constant sound like this:

And a tune from 2013:

IT'S NOT FAIR!!! They should have Brian Guitar (my former bandmate in Lou's Classic Ride) on their tour too!

50 Million will Buy a LOT

Frankly, I don't take a lot of time to invest in what $50 million homes look like around the world - though I just breezed through the slideshow at the other end of the link. I have more important things to keep me busy. For one, we are heading up to Elkader for the weekend for what I hope is a relaxing weekend. This is the movie at the Elkader Theater, but Karen doesn't like 3D movies and it is only being shown in 3D when it is possible for Alex, his friend Austin, Karen, and I to go:

I personally don't have a problem with 3D movies so maybe I'll end up seeing it - the trailer looks funny.

Mending

One time, our former priest at Saint Thomas More said in his homily that when we point a finger at someone else, there are 4 fingers pointing back at you. I thought about that statement when I read today's "Moments with You" email - the link is below. The gist of the brief essay is that everyone has family issues and, sadly, I am included in the "everyone" in that sentence.

I'll try to keep this brief and without excessive personal details. On Father's Day, at 9:18 AM, Dad called me. He said he had 4 tickets to the US Open in WI on Father's Day but didn't ask me to go with him because he didn't think I liked golf. I am not a die-hard golf fanatic - I haven't played in 2017 - but I have played golf each summer since around 1994 or 1995, either with the Mount Mercy College group or with Louie, my father-in-law. I can only recall playing golf with my dad once and the reason I remember that is because it was July 1998. I was working at Jordan Systems in Cedar Rapids as a technical writer. It had been a dream job from the day I started in February 1998 but now, the company was having financial issues. Karen was pregnant with our second child and I felt like I needed to make a change. I remember talking to Dad about this on the golf course and wanting his advice. I've played a lot of golf over the last 21 years - I remember that round. And yet, it came to be that on Father's Day 2017, Dad told me he had the 4 tickets but had asked my brother (a given in my head), a family friend that I've known all my life (another given in my head), and a guy from Dad's golf group (I guess he would be the 'short straw' but I know he and Dad are friends so I know it made sense to Dad to ask him). He said, "You didn't want to go, did you?" and I said, "I would've liked the option to choose." I could hear in Dad's voice that it dawned on him, at that moment, that he had made a mistake and hurt my feelings. He asked if anything was new, I said no, and that was the end of the conversation - I haven't spoken to him since, which is par (hee hee!) for our relationship. One other interesting tidbit is we talked for 6:35 minutes, which is likely a record length. When I hung up, I cried because Dad didn't choose me. I went upstairs and hugged Karen and told her I loved her. She was upset and insisted that I call Dad back and to tell him I was hurt, but I refused to do so. In hindsight, I know doing so would have hurt his feelings and I really really try to not hurt other people's feelings, though I know I have not always done so.

There are three principles that can help me in dealing with this and other family issues I have not mentioned in detail on this blog:
  1. Realize you're not alone. Sibling difficulty was an issue in the very first family—something between Cain and Abel, as I recall—and it continues to stain most families today as they age and expand. What you're dealing with is unfortunately more normal than abnormal.
  2. Stop trying to change them. If you have a tendency to be the 9-1-1 rescue responder, resign from that role. Put your trust in a big God, and turn the job over to Him. He's good at it.
  3. Forgive them. Resist resentment. Stop punishing them. Give them the grace and mercy you have received from the Lord, and choose to love them, even if it must be from a safe distance.
Maybe if I adhere to those principles, life will find its way to calm and serenity. Here's the link to the article: Big Brothers and Sisters.

Horny Genius started originally under the Tom Waits’ inspired name, Mental Midgets. They had an air of vomit-induced freneticism in their anarcho-pop stylings. Horny Genius’ first demo in ’86 became a cult classic in the Cedar Valley. The band’s biggest stage might’ve been opening up for They Might Be Giants, but they toured as far as Germany and Holland before calling it quits around 1991.
|
I always have regretted not joining Horny Genius in winter 1990. I was very upset with God after I learned they were going to play in Europe in fall 1990, but now that I see they split up in 1991? Eh, I feel better.
