No - Not that Company

No, this is not the job I mentioned earlier today (duh! That job was for a "Technical Communication Specialist" job and this is for a "Technical Writer II" job), but I thought it was interesting. I assigned the "crappy jobs that I won't apply for" label because of this line in the job description:
Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and units of measure.
I was an English major for a reason!! 😁

The Technical Writer II position is responsible for creating and publishing technical documentation such as operator manuals, parts pages, and work instructions. Interprets technical information and creates documentation in a clear and concise manner. This position requires proficient communication and technical ability. This position will receive specific instruction, in addition to general direction of key objectives, to complete essential duties.

  • Develops and maintains company technical documentation including product operator manuals, parts pages, and work instructions, training documents, etc.
  • Creates high quality product manuals that meet applicable standards and is appropriate for the audience.
  • Acquires knowledge of equipment operation and standards for use in technical documentation.
  • Studies engineering drawings, sketches, parts lists, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail.

  • Works closely with design engineering on technical information needed to produce manuals.
  • Designs models, animations, and other interactive features for manuals, training, and procedures using technology including SolidWorks and Composer.
  • Reads journals, reports, and other material to become familiar with product technologies and industry standards.
  • Reviews manufacturer's and trade catalogs, drawings and other data relative to operation, maintenance, and service of equipment.
  • Considers size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, selects style and size of type, and recommends / arranges layout based upon available space and aesthetic design concepts.
  • Prepares electronic files and final layouts for printing. Communicates specifications to the printer. May also be involved in the assembly.
  • Reviews final layout and suggests improvements as needed.
  • Prepares illustrations for each project as needed.
  • Remains current in software, technology, and design/layout techniques.

  • Assists in photo shoots. And captures photos for documentation purposes as needed.
  • Organizes material and completes writing assignment according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Reviews published materials and recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction and binding. Maintains records and files of work and revisions.
  • Suggests or recommends photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material. Assists in laying out material for publication.
  • Reviews standards (ISO, ANSI, etc) and applies to manuals and internal documents.
  • Reviews government regulations and safety standards for our equipment.
  • Effectively manages time and work load.

Requirements

Qualifications and Essential Skills:
  • Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with four (4) years of experience in the manufacturing setting, or related area; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to grasp technical concepts and make them easily understandable in text and illustrations.
  • Experience working with and across diverse cross-functional teams.
  • Strong CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Highly detailed and organized.
  • Experience with researching and analyzing data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of application.
  • Experience in effectively presenting information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Experience in solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet. Employee may be exposed to shop environment while distributing documents to shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration, and occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the plant shop environment is moderately loud.
