That's What I Want Part II

Without even clicking on the video below, look at the smile on Harald Huyssen's face as he plays the drums. What I want when I write about playing in an Ideal Band is to have that smile as I play my drums.

And maybe that's why when I search the Craigslist > Iowa City > Musicians page for "drummer" and see the following, I feel a little sad:
Drummer Wanted - Empty!

I will say when I read for the Quad Cities-based band 50 Shades of Rock, I felt like I would be the perfect drummer for them, especially when I read this blurb:

We play the songs in the original keys with the original arrangements and the vocals/guitar solos are strict interpretations.

It made me think that Uncle Rico the Band and 50 Shades of Rock would have been a great 1-2 punch in a bar as Uncle Rico the Band played strict interpretations as well, which is not a bad thing, per se. If I talk about Uncle Rico the Band, I talk about just how awesome playing with them made me as a drummer because I had to be 'ready to go' at rehearsal. If there were tunes I needed to work on between the previous practice and the next practice, it was in my best interest to have done so. I am not being negative about the other 3 in the band - it was a sense of being prepared to work out the parts that were giving me difficulty at the last practice, which required me to know how I was going to play it. I can liken it to how if a guitarist says he's going to learn the solo for a tune at practice on November 1 and then the band practices again on November 15th, the expectation of the other band members would be that the guitarist has learned the solo for that tune - he made a promise to his bandmates. The same was true for me and Uncle Rico the Band with difficult-for-me-parts being promised as what I would hammer out prior to the next rehearsal. Kind of a convoluted way of saying, "Do what you promise to do."

I'm not going to try to be the drummer for 50 Shades of Rock for a very good reason. In 2018, they scheduled 25 gigs, which is double, plus 1, the number of gigs I'd like to play in a year. Here's when they played, plus the 2 remaining gigs in 2018:
  1. JAN 6
  2. JAN 13
  3. FEB 3
  4. FEB 10
  5. MAR 30
  6. APR 27
  7. MAY 5
  8. MAY 26
  9. JUN 2
  10. JUN 16
  11. JUN 22
  12. JUN 30
  13. JUL 5
  14. JUL 14
  15. JUL 27
  16. AUG 3
  17. AUG 4
  18. AUG 10
  19. AUG 24
  20. SEP 15
  21. SEP 29
  22. OCT 13
  23. OCT 27
  24. NOV 30
  25. DEC 21
That's too many gigs for a nearly 49 year-old drummer. It's not a good fit.

That said, they did play at J&A Tap in North Liberty:
