Virgil Donati-Modern Drummer Days 1997
Virgil Donati Bio
Virgil was born and raised in Melbourne Australia. From the time he could barely utter a word, he keenly observed the regular band rehearsals his father held in the house. Virgil’s interest in music and instinct for rhythm had been apparent to his parents for some time. They began considering a musical path for him, and one month prior to turning 3, he found himself sitting behind his first real drumset.
Joining his first rock band and signing with his first major label at age 15 was surely the right choice for the young drummer. The band was called `Taste’. This was to give Virgil his early experiences in the studio, with three releases by the band. The relentless touring also allowed him to cultivate and improve his skills where it counts – on stage.
At the age of 16, Virgil turned pro to enable him to tour and focus on music, and has since devoted his whole life and soul to his art. The motivation has been his endless and restless pursuit to express himself through his playing.
At age 19 Virgil traveled to the U.S. to further study drumming, and also took classes in composition and arranging. Returning to Australia at age 21 his career was alight. He was in demand playing many genres of music, including jazz, rock, pop, theatre and studio work. He also worked with many visiting artists, including jazz pianist George Cables, vocalist Mark Murphy, Branford Marsalis and Kenny Kirkland, Melissa Etheridge.
His next taste of commercial success came in the early 90’s with Southern Sons. The band reached double platinum with their debut album. At the same time, throughout the mid 80’s and 90’s, Virgil’s interest in progressive music was exploited with several bands he initiated, most notably Loose Change, and later, On The Virg.
In 1996 Virgil uprooted and relocated in the U.S.A., in an attempt to expand onto the world stage. It has since proved to be a very rewarding and productive time. Recording and touring with the likes of Planet X, Steve Vai, CAB, Scott Henderson, Steve Walsh, Tribal Tech, Frank Gambale, Derek Sherinian, Mark Boals, Dave Stewart, Mick Jagger, Josh Stone, and many others, he continues to push the limits of the instrument to astonishing new levels.Part I

Blackie in Pain
As many of you already know I had a serious setback at the hands of a very unqualified Doctor here in Europe about 2 weeks into the tour. I've been receiving treatment at a hospital in Berlin and that team of Doctors has been nothing short of fantastic. But, at the same time they strongly advised me to stop the tour and go back to L.A. and begin my rehab. But it's hard for them to understand, this is the only 40th Anniversary I'm ever going to get, not to mention the fans that have stood by us this entire time have waited over 3 years, and because of the pandemic suffered 3 different sets of tour postponements. I go back to Berlin on Friday for 2 days for more treatments which means both the shows in Italy will be missed. At the start the Doctors there told me without rest and rehab I would definitely get worse. As hard as I've pushed through these shows, they were right. The show last night in Zurich was cut short by 2 songs, and I do apologize for that but the pain reached a point where I could no longer perform and it lasted throughout the entire show. My legs were giving out on me and it got dangerous. I will not be able to stand to do the remaining 5 shows, so the compromise I reached with the Doctors was if I would stay seated, in a chair to do these last 5 then they will give me clearance to finish the tour and do those remaining 5 shows. I've never done this before, but please understand, my intention is to finish this tour, come hell or high water, and give this incredibly dedicated fan base, that has been with us from the beginning, the show they have all heard about. Plus we're going to build the chair into "Elvis". Hey, he's been with us the whole time and he will finish this tour right beside me because he's basically one of the Band.
But, as frustrating as this all has been I can't wait to get into rehab, and then destroy America.... Again, on the 2nd, and final leg of the "40th Anniversary World Tour"!! We are Coming Back....and we're Coming to Hurt Somebody!!

How did the 2018-19 Season Go?
Can Iowa Reverse Its Recent Tailspin With Fran McCaffery? 14 comments Can the Hawkeyes get back on track after two rough years? By Thomas Beindit@tbeindit May 9, 2018, 9:43am CDT
How brave do I feel? Well, I predict the following 10 things:
- Every player mentioned in the above article is likely to have graduated and to have moved on to the next phase in their lives and, to them, I hope they are doing well
- Coach Fran McCaffery will still be the Iowa men's basketball coach. The only way that prediction is true is if Coach has led the team over the 4 years, 7 months, 2 weeks, 5 days (1692 days) since I wrote these words.
- I work at the University of Iowa as a Senior Technical Writer - it will be my 2598th day (7 years, 1 month, 1 week, 4 days) in HCIS (though it could be called something different 5 years from now).
- I am not using RoboHelp 2015 to do my work
- Spit Out the Bone is regarded as a requirement on the Metallica setlist.
- https://hcis.healthcare.uiowa.edu/ exists and is used daily. There is a Knowledge Repository.
- I still adore Anthony Raneri?
- Brett Kavanaugh is on the Supreme Court, despite https://freebeacon.com/blog/brett-kavanaugh-found-guilty-proven-innocent , which includes this gem:
- No, like really, I still adore AR! Five years ago, there were 125,501 views for this video.
- This was not my most recent Metallica concert:

This Would be Interesting

Found it!
If I wanted to blow all of my savings on a set of drums, this is the order I would place. However, no, I don't want to blow all of my savings on a set of drums.
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DDRUMHYB-5BK--ddrum-hybrid-5-kit-5-piece-acoustic-electric-drum-set-black-with-red-hardware - ddrum Hybrid 5 Kit 5-piece Acoustic/Electric Drum Set - Black with Red Hardware
How gorgeous is this set!?!?
ddrum Hybrid 5 Acoustic Drum Kit with Internal Triggers at a Glance:Combines ddrum's triggering and acoustic drum expertise
- Combines ddrum's triggering and acoustic drum expertise
- 100% birch shells deliver a crisp, cutting tone
- ddrum Acoustic Pro triggers are at the top of their class
ddrum has been a leader in drum triggering since 1983. And in 2005, it changed the acoustic drum market again by offering boutique-style shell packs and hardware options to drummers of all levels. The ddrum Hybrid 5 is the natural marriage of these two ideas. Not only is the ddrum Hybrid 5 a pro acoustic kit, but it features top-class triggering to capture the real feel of your every performance.
100% birch shells deliver a crisp, cutting toneThe ddrum Hybrid 5 boasts modern shell sizes with a smart satin finish. We at Sweetwater especially liked the red hardware and badges - a nod to ddrum's trademark drum modules and triggers. The toms, kick, and snare in this shell pack are all made from 100% birch plies (6, 8, and 6, respectively). This gives the ddrum Hybrid 5 a cutting attack, a slightly scooped midrange, and dry overtones. The bass drum is full and responsive. And the snare and toms have a lively quality and quick decay that make them ideal for close-miking.
ddrum Acoustic Pro triggers are at the top of their classArtists from Butch Vig to Ginger Fish rely on ddrum's elite triggering to capture the feel and energy of their drum performances. The ddrum Acoustic Pro triggers mounted inside each shell in the ddrum Hybrid 5 shell pack exhibit a realistic dynamic response and good resistance to false triggering. This technology is far superior to triggering drums with microphones - one that makes it onvenient to blend sounds from a drum module or laptop for demanding live and studio applications.
ddrum Hybrid 5 Acoustic Drum Kit with Internal Triggers Features:
- Modern acoustic drum shell pack
- Smart satin finish with bold red hardware
- 5-piece kit made from 100% birch plies
- Crisp, quick, dry tone is ideal for close-miking
- Internal ddrum Acoustic Pro single-zone triggers allow for convenient drum layering and sample replacement

Stop! Thinking the Worst is NOT what I Should Do
The stress started Friday, 4-28, and has ranged from a simmering to full-blown boil ever since! And that's where this article - https://getpocket.com/explore/item/four-ways-to-stop-thinking-the-worst-will-happen-when-you-re-stressed?utm_source=pocket-newtab
- Four Ways to Stop Thinking the Worst Will Happen When You’re Stressed - comes into play. It turns out that I should have read this article on Friday, 4-28, not Wednesday, 5-3.
To catch up on what my week has been like, on Friday, 4-28, when I was on my way to work, lights came on in our 2007 Ford F-150. On the left side of the steering wheel, I saw "O/D Off" and where the odometer is, a message displayed "Trans Fault". I turned around and asked Karen to follow me to Linder Tire, hoping that Mark would be able to fix whatever "Trans Fault" meant. However, when I talked to Mark, he told me that he doesn't work on transmissions and that his mechanic had a 9 hour job scheduled for Friday. Mark assured me that he would do what he could.
On my way back to work, I thought about whether I needed to find another mechanic to look at our 2007 Ford F-150. I stopped at All-Seasons Automotive but they weren't open yet. I remembered that there was a "Quality" garage just north of the McDonald's on 965 so I decided to drive there.
That turned out to be the best decision I made on Friday as it turns out that Alex at Quality Care Auto (QCA) works with Mark at Linder Tire when there is something one or the other business cannot do. For example, one of the techs at Quality went down to Linder Tire to do ... something mechanical that escapes me now ... when the tech at Linder Tire was sick. Alex and I talked through some different scenarios including the fact that QCA would work on transmissions, outsourcing to other businesses if necessary. Alex's words calmed me down a bit and it made me feel good to discuss the situation with Alex. Alex didn't think he would be able to get to our 2007 Ford F-150 on Friday but if there was a cancellation, he would try to look at it. However, since our 2007 Ford F-150 was still at Linder Tire, not at QCA, and since I had asked Mark to look at it, I didn't know what to do other than to return to Linder Tire and explain that I had talked to Alex at QCA. Mark was extremely cool about the situation and said that he had our 2007 Ford F-150 already pulled into the garage. He said that if needed, he would get our 2007 Ford F-150 up to Mark at QCA.
Work Hours passed on Friday. Eventually, I got a phone call from Mark at Linder Tire that he had found out it was a sensor and that he had transported our 2007 Ford F-150 to Alex at QCA.
Later, I called Alex and he confirmed that he would be looking at on Monday.
I went through the spectrum of the unknown. Would fixing a sensor cost $100? Would fixing a sensor cost $5,000 or, worse yet, $10,000? I had no idea. I spent April 29th and April 30th going through that spectrum pretty much continuously. I am certain Karen was thinking about the unknown cost of fixing a sensor as well.
Finally, Monday comes and I hear from Alex at QCA. He reported that he had diagnosed the issue and with an oil change and fixing the sensor, final bill would be $595. The part would come in Tuesday and he would get it done after that. While not good news - who thinks a $595 car repair bill is good news? - it was also not devastatingly awful news either.
Which leads me up to yesterday. When I called around 3 PM, Alex reported that it had been pulled into the garage and that he would call when it was done. However, around 4 PM, Alex called. The wrong part had been sent so he had requested to have the correct part be sent, it would arrive on Wednesday, and he would make it the highest priority. He also said that he was going to reduce our bill for the invonvenience.
And today is Wednesday. I took Karen to UIHC this morning and when my 3 - 3:50 meeting is over, I will return to UIHC to pick her up and then head to QCA to pick up our 2007 Ford F-150, ending this episode in car repairs.
