Someday,  I should resume watching WWE. The New Day being unable to do a promo because of their heel heat? Love it.  I thought I was going to see a Kingston v Woods feud for the right to the name "The New Day" which I admit to dreading. Great job WWE Creative for telling a new story.

How to Choose Drumsticks Part II - Kind of

This is an email I just received and it's totally related to How to Choose Drumsticks

From: Mark Feldman <mark@bangthedrumschool.com>
Date: Nov 25, 2024 7:29 AM
Subject: I Wish I Could Tell This To My 8 Year Old Self

Hello Friends -

I was lucky enough to go to a private middle and elementary school in NYC as a kid.

I recall that we were first introduced to foreign languages when we were about eight years old.

The teacher told us that we could pick Spanish or French.

"You can pick whichever one you want," she told us.

Like a bonehead, I chose French.

The reason I think it was bad decision is that I never---seeing as I reside in the USA---have the opportunity to speak or otherwise use this language skill.

It's pretty much useless to me.

Sure, when I went to Paris, I used it.

But so what?

If someone had just properly advised me as a youngster, I would have taken Spanish instead.

Now, that would have been useful!

But French? Nope. I wasted my time on that.

Well, you could argue that I learned how to learn or that my brain was "exercised" or developed because of learning French.

And you'd probably be right on that score.

But, I still would have gotten a lot more utility out of having learned to speak Spanish.

I wish my parents had advised to learn Spanish instead, but they didn't. Not that I can blame them; I probably came home from school one day and simply informed them, "hey mom, hey dad...guess what? I'm learning French in school!"

They probably just heard that and said, "oh, that's nice, Mark."

So, I can't blame them.

Even as a kid, you don't always get all the guidance that you need or want.

Sometimes it's the same with drumming.

I may have told you the story of a teacher I had who taught me a technical thing that was absolutely wrong. And I spent hundreds of hours practicing that way.

It was John Riley (if you don't know him, look him up) who showed me the correct way, but it was absolutely brutal having to undo all of that ingrained muscle memory from learning the wrong thing.

I won't mention the name of the person who showed me the wrong thing here....just because he doesn't really teach anymore so none of you are in "danger."

But the tale I've just told really proves that it's incredibly important to get good guidance.

Do any of you feel confused about how to learn the drums from the beginning?

What do you even do first?

What should you spend your time on?

What are the correct details of hand technique? and foot technique?

There's a lot of stuff to learn and you need someone you can trust.

That's why I made the Drumming for Absolute Beginners online video course.

You don't want to waste time on the wrong stuff!

I'm ready to help you with this.

I'll give you the info you need; I'll teach you everything!  You won't have to worry about that.

Step-by-step; if you want to learn the drums all you have to do is follow my instructions. It's really easy. I've made the whole thing super simple.

This course will take you from

Point A = I don't really know how to play

to

Point B = I can just sit down behind the drums and play off the top of my head (and sound great doing it).

Like I said, it's our online video course called "Drumming for Absolute Beginners."

It's step-by-step and it's based on my system of learning called The 5 Pillars of Drumming® (which is actually a registered trademark--it's for real).

Do it at home at your own pace. You'll get results. Just follow the steps.

Thanks for reading.

KODAK vs. Legacybox – Which One Should You Use?

I have a lot of respect for Kodak for publishing this article. Most companies who write about their competitors don't give their competitors as much credit as Kodak does to Legacybox.
From: https://kodakdigitizing.com/blogs/news/kodak-vs-legacybox - KODAK vs. Legacybox – Which One Should You Use?:

The answer is KODAK, but just by a hair. While both companies are great for your digitization needs, the deciding factor comes to the fact that KODAK offers a slightly cheaper mail-in box starter kit, not to mention the iconic innovation the company has provided the film industry for more than a decade. Both companies have professional technicians to care for your memories, keep them private and in good condition – not to mention, return them to you quickly and safely to share with friends and family. But in the end, KODAK gets the edge.

How to Choose Drumsticks

When I was growing up, my parents wanted to treat Mark, my younger brother, and I fairly. When I showed an interest in drumming, one or both of my parents went to Carma Lou's House of Music on Center Point Road and bought a pair of drumsticks and then, I think it was for Christmas, Mark got a drumstick and I got a drumstick. Unless you're Rick Allen - much respect to Def Leppard's drummer who lost an arm in a terrible auto accident decades ago - one drumstick is not going to get the job done. I tell that story to people who ask me how long I've played drums. I think it's a funny story; I tell it quite well.
Fast forwarding through the 1980s, I began playing drums both in 3904 Studios and at school. During that time, there was Modern Drummer magazine, which would show up on a magazine rack at Carma Lou's House of Music. There was no such thing as Drumeo or the Internet. It makes me wonder if I were growing up when my kids grew up - from 1996 to the present - the following question / theory: Would I have become a better drummer than I am now if I had access to the technology that is available in 2024? Right now, just to set the stage, the technology to learn how to play drums is overwhelming.
  • You can purchase 1:1 mentoring sessions with drummers who live all around the world.
  • You can go to Nashville, TN, for a week of intensive "drum school" where all you do is play drums every day for a week.
  • You can watch countless videos by drummers on Youtube as well as videos behind a paywall to learn how to play like John Bonham or Buddy Rich or even Lars Ulrich.
Those examples are broad strokes and not an exhaustive list. My point is that the information available from 1996 to the present was obviously not available in 1980. I had to figure things out about drumming through Modern Drummer magazine or watching videos on MTV or watching and listening to any drummer that happened to be playing drums wherever I was. I never knew anything about what is included in the video below about how to choose a drumstick. Jared, from Drumeo, breaks down the different types of drumsticks that are available. None of this information was available in a video like this. When I went by myself to Carma Lou's House of Music on Center Point Road with the intention of buying drumsticks, I could try out different drumsticks but I didn't know what I was choosing. How many drumsticks did I purchase in my lifetime? Wow, I wish I had that number. I can't fathom how many drumsticks I would not have purchased if I had watched the video below.
Why embed this video about choosing drumsticks? I have played drums for (roughly) 40 years, give or take a few years. I'm embedding this video in the hope that some drummer happens upon this post on my blog, reads the text of this post, and watches the video below, and has an eaasier time getting into playing drums than I did. I don't regret my path - it was mine to navigate and pave.

Expiring Soon

November 24, 2024 marks the 3000 day anniversary of the announcement that Kirk Ferentz signed a contract extension to be Iowa's football coach through the 2024 season. based upon this article. I'm hoping there will be a long and winding dissertation published about Ferentz's accomplishments that I can link to HERE. I chose this date to publish this post because, at least in 2016, Iowa plays Nebraska on the Friday after Thanksgiving and since Thanksgiving is this Thursday, well, I thought it'd be appropriate. I'm not saying it will be his final game. After all, how could I possibly know in 2016 if  Iowa will be eligible for a bowl game in 2024?

Editor's Note: prhmusic will be alive 20079 days - 54 years, 11 months, 2 weeks, 6 days - when this post is published, a mere 10 days before turning 55. Here are some assumptions about this post:
  1. Kirk Ferentz didn't leave coaching prior to the 2024 season
  2. The Cedar Rapids Gazette exists as that is the destination of the link above
  3. prhmusic is alive
Hope for at least # 3 to be true... <grin>

Everyday Royalty is STELLAR

I am embarassed to admit that the latest Anthony Raneri album called Everyday Royalty was released last week and it has taken me 6 days to acknowledge its release. This is a fantastic album and I hope that everyone in the entire world hears this album and loves it as much as I do. I embedded the entire album below, but I wanted to point out the best track on the album called "High Road" so I embedded it below:

And here's the entire album playlist:

Captain Marvel to lead Avengers Doomsday & Secret Wars

This Will Happen After Your Funeral

This is a reminder that life is so short and tomorrow is not a guarantee. In fact, there's no promise by anyone that I will be alive later today! It's not up to me. It's important to do what matters the most to me every day and to not put off to tomorrow what may be done today.

I should take my own advice as I didn't do that yesterday. There was a discussion about putting up the Christmas lights outside and I didn't want to do it. I didn't have any other plans; I just didn't want to do that. I was fooling myself because when I get home from work today, the Christmas lights will be put up outside. Should I have just gotten the work done yesterday? Probably. It's not easy to consider the broader picture when it comes to something small like this example. I don't know what the right answer is regarding all of this. Just to set the table and spell out what I think about, this is an incomplete list of projects I think I will complete.

  • I want to create a single set of files for our family pictures. Literally, there are 500,000 JPG files that are misnamed, incorrectly named, and duplicates exist like crazy.
  • I want to create a single set of files for my MP3s. I recently took on this task from the perspective that if I ensured each folder only had one file that stared with 01_*, I could reasonably assume that I don't have any duplicates in that folder. I have also divided my MP3 folders into sub-folders:
    • Spindles 01-10 - this is complete
    • Spindles 11-20 - I was working on these folders yesterday
    • Spindles 21-30
    • Spindles 31-40
    • Spindles 41-50
    • Spindles 51-60
  • I want to finish converting Spindle 60 and work towards completing the spindles I have qued up in the den - Spindles
  1. 61
  2. 62
  3. 63
  4. 64
  5. 65
  6. 66
  7. 67
  8. 68
  9. 69
  • I also have a stack of papers with notes about MP3s that were not in an expected folder. For example, I have the Billy Joel - Live at Shea Stadium 2 CD release and in the folder with the MP3s for CD-01, I don't have tracks 6 and 8. It's the craziest thing. I even did a search across all of my EHDs yesterday, using DOS commands:
  • F
  • I
  • J
  • L
  • O
  • P
  • Y
  • Z
That's an abbreviated list to reinforce my point.

12 Great Bands Plus 3 More

This is a list of 12 great bands. None of the 12 bands listed below are new to this blog - there was an existing label for each and every one of them so I have included an appropriate link in the list. I think it's interesting that Motley Crue and Guns-n-Roses have so many pages.

  1. Quiet Riot (15)
  2. Bon Jovi (9)
  3. Motley Crue (62)
  4. Cinderella (8)
  5. Twisted Sister (11)
  6. Poison (19)
  7. Europe (4)
  8. Guns-n-Roses (35)
  9. Dokken (34)
  10. Winger (4)
  11. Ratt (18)
  12. Warrant (9)

In contrast, when asked, I often will say that Metallica, Bayside, and Count the Stars are my 3 favorite bands. Here's how many labels for each of those bands exist on my blog:

What if Spider Man and Batman Switched Villains

Why is Spider Man with a space but Batman doesn't have a space? You may answer because Spider Man is a Marvel hero and Batman is a DC hero, which is a reasonable (to me) answer. However, that doesn't explain why Plastic Man - who is a DC hero - has a space while Superman doesn't have a space?
