Editor's Note: Obviously, NO, it's not funny that a woman was killed.

During our vacation to Cleveland, OH, last week, Karen mentioned that she would like to visit a beach as that would be a great vacation for her. I am never one to shy away from seeing both sides of an idea which is why I had to chuckle when I saw this article: Woman killed on South Carolina beach by umbrella caught up in gust of wind.

It is the the requirement that I love to see and, truly, even though I do not consider myself a programmer, I do see value in using snippets, variables, DOS batch files, and Word macros as a means to automate manual work. That is the motivation behind writing and updating my Single Source Rant page. I want to un-complicate all aspects of the work I do with Disaster Recovery Documentation and Knowledge Management documentation - work smarter, not harder. It's why being MRDR [(Mister Disaster Recovery Documentation tm)] is who I am after 2334 days (6 years, 4 months, 3 weeks) in my current role. If my life goes according to my plan, I have worked 0.3195071868583162 or, rounded to the nearest 10th, 31.9 % of the 20 years I want to work here. Just to state it again, my plan is to work until Friday, March 28, 2036. I will be 66 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days old on that day and, according to my plan, I will work 115 days (3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days) past my 65th birthday in order to reach 20 years here. That's my plan anyways. 

All that aside, this is the awesome job that I won't apply for.

No True Change from 324 days Ago

This post - Naming Conventions for My Music - Questioning Myself - posed a question about whether to put the band name first in my naming conventions or if I should continue to use the track number first. Since I posed that question nearly a year ago, I can report that the majority of my MP3s still have the track number first. I can also say that I have a copy of my MP3s from the cassette to MP3 conversion with the Artist Name first. Even though I have massive insconsistencies, this is a copy of the MP3 file names.

Hanging on a Thin String

Live in IA with a CA Salary?

Last week, I was on vacation. I saw this ad and wondered, "What would it be like to live in IA and earn a salary based upon living in CA?" I don't plan to find out. It is interesting because the classification for this position is specified as "Flexible or Remote" and the definitions of both are listed in the description, but I've pasted them below this paragraph:

We are looking for a Senior Content Strategist who brings expertise and innovation to deliver the right content to the right audience at the right moment. You will develop and manage Now on Now content strategy for projects, from discovery to publishing to post-launch evaluation and governance. What you’ll do in this role

• Develop content strategies that target the right audience with the right content to exceed the needs of our stakeholders and, ultimately, drive deeper customer and prospect engagement with ServiceNow.
• Discover customer and business requirements by conducting research, content analytics, user engagement, competitive analysis, and stakeholder interviews.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you have:

• 7+ years of experience working in content strategy, preferably for enterprise B2B technology
• Experience working in collaborative, high-performing teams
• Background in Product Marketing and/or Field Sales in a closing role for Enterprise B2B technology
• Deep understanding of and experience with content best practices content, management systems, reporting, and analytics
• Proven ability to execute content strategy initiatives with the success metrics to show value delivered
• Experience with content governance, content management, and content metrics across multiple channels
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Strong mathematic and analytic skills
• Proven success building stakeholder relationships and managing expectations

Cancel Metallica?!?

Years ago, I started watching the "Stranger Things" series on Netflix. I watched at least 3 episodes before I got busy with life and now, without keeping up with the series, I am several seasons behind. It's not that I disliked the show - Wynnona Ryder is not ugly after all these years; I just got busy. Also, now, the Internet is buzzing because apparently in the last episode of the current season, a character plays "Master of Puppets" on guitar. One of the results of the Internet is that people try to "cancel" people that they don't understand, which is why this article exists: https://www.loadedradio.com/metallica-cancel-culture.

In my opinion, if you're going to cancel Metallica, cancel them for covering "So What" and "Green Hell" and "Am I Evil", not because of anything else. It just shows how dumb the idea of cancelling someone is.

START with the END in mind! - Revisited

This is the 3rd time that I have quoted Jason Cannon's email about "The biggest mistake shell scripters make" to whom I am giving every speck of credit to for his words (of course!) This email arrived in my Inbox on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 5:50 AM. Here's his email:

Hello, From time to time one of my students will ask me to take a look at one of their shell scripts that they are having trouble with. If you know anything about me at all, you know that I love three things. Linux, troubleshooting, and shell scripting. (Make that four things... teaching my love of Linux, troubleshooting and shell scripting!) The offer to review a shell script is almost irresistible to me, so I'll say "Sure, I'll look at it." Reviewing scripts gives me the chance to see many common mistakes. And the number one biggest mistake of all is: Not defining exactly what the shell script is supposed to do! What is supposed to happen when I run this shell script? Why does this script exist? Can I at least get a simple comment at the top of the script justifying its existence?!? (Um, no.) By the way, I'm not judging or blaming. Again, this is a very common mistake... a mistake I used to make when I first started scripting, too. This is coming from a place of caring. I *want* people to write awesome shell scripts and I *love* helping them do so! So, here's my first piece of advice to any (new) shell scripter: START with the END in mind! Why? Well... sometimes people make assumptions about HOW to accomplish their larger goal. You may think you need to do A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and so on to get to Z, but in reality there may be a shortcut that takes you straight from A TO Z. (Shortcuts like bash builtins, predefined shell variables, Linux commands that you didn't even know existed, etc.) It's the age-old case of not being able to see the forest for the trees and getting lost in the weeds. :-) You could easily end up with this: When all you needed was this: (Shameless plug: If want to learn all the best scripting "shortcuts," check out my latest project-based shell scripting class here.) Another trap you can fall into is biting off more than you can chew.  Once you have a goal in mind for your script, keep it focused on the essentials. ·         What MUST this script do? ·         If this script could only do one thing, what would that be? ·         What will get me 90% of the way to my goal with the least amount of effort? Start there. Implement that first, then circle back around to the "nice-to-haves" or bigger goals for your script.
