System of a Down Drummer: I'm 'Not Proud' of Some of Our Recent Shows

From 2015

This was Published 7 Years Ago

On October 31, 2012, at 11:37 AM, this article was published: How to Cope With Useless User Manuals. That means it was published 2557 days (7 years, 1 day) ago and since its publication, there have been 2,839 views, with an average of 1.110285490809542 each day.

Wow.

I don't know if that's a good number of average views across 2557 days or not - infer your own conclusion.

7000 Posts

This was the state of my blog one year ago today, which is when I reached 7000 posts. I think it was a pretty cool thing to achieve when I consider this blog began as a whim on a 11 years, 11 months, 1 week, 1 day (4360 days) ago, had zero posts for ~ 3 months before I returned to it.

Duplicates (and Non-Duplicates) On 3 EHDs

Here's some stats regarding the 3 EHDs I am working with regarding duplicate files. I used the DOS command dir *(* /s
in
p:\ffffff-root
i:\final-files\root
g:\mastermaster

There were 697187 total files and 205429 duplicate files. Thus, there are 491758 files that do not have the *(* pattern in its file name. See below:

  697187
- 205429
  491758
Using my crude math skills, here's how those numbers translate into percentages:
100 (491758 / 697187) = 70.53459114986367
100 (205429 / 697187) = 29.46540885013633
Here is some pictures as evidence:

I don't know why g:\mastermaster\masterbmp is "corrupt" when I use this command dir g:\mastermaster\masterbmp\*.*

Happy Spook Day!

Backing Up Drive I

It's always something with me & my backups on external hard drives (EHD). Today, I'm backing up my I: EHD to my G: EHD.

But I am using a different EHD as my G: EHD now. The G: EHD that I have used in the past is the EHD with the loose connector in the back. That EHD has now been sidelined from daily use.

Instead, I use the 5 TB EHD I purchased at Best Buy when I also purchased a new charging cord for my cell phone - I wrote about it in a blog post. So this screenshot is what I have running. The Time Remaining value often fluctuates. I've seen it at 10 hours, then drop to 6 hours, then rise to 6 1/2 hours. I just let it run in the background and try not to think about it.

Editor's Note: It is 4:02 PM on 10/30/2019. This is the status of the I: EHD to my G: EHD.

It's happening again.

I have felt like this before: my interest in WWE and professional wrestling is on a plateau and I'm unsure if I will increase or decrease my interest in the next few months. JE Homicide?

From Fox News:

The body of disgraced money man and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found dead in his Manhattan federal prison cell in August, bore telltale signs of homicide despite an official ruling that he killed himself, a pioneering forensic pathologist revealed to “Fox & Friends” in an exclusive interview Wednesday. The bombshell claim by Dr. Michael Baden, a former New York City medical examiner who has worked on high-profile cases during a five-decade medical career, is certain to reignite suspicions that surfaced immediately after Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges involving underage girls, was discovered dead in his cell on Aug. 10. Baden, who was hired by Epstein’s brother and observed the autopsy, told Fox News its findings are more consistent with homicidal strangulation than suicidal hanging.

Good News For Some, Not Me

I am glad that some co-workers are getting a raise - that's awesome!!
From Mid-year salary adjustments announced for 2,750 employees:

More than 2,750 staff at University of Iowa Health Care will soon be seeing a little more in their paycheck due to a mid-year market adjustment made by hospital leadership.

“In order to continue to provide outstanding care for our patients, we also must take care of our own staff,” says Suresh Gunasekaran, chief executive officer of University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, and associate vice president, University of Iowa Health Care. “One of the ways we are doing this is by making market adjustments that are more in line with the market.”

UI Health Care continuously monitors the market to ensure that our salaries are competitive. These analyses are then balanced against financial performance and operational priorities. At this time, we are able to provide mid-year market adjustments to nine employee classifications that were identified as most in need of adjustments to remain competitive in the market.

“Every employee is valued for their important contribution to the mission,” says Gunasekaran. While we are able to provide mid-year adjustments only for part of our workforce at this time, we will continue our ongoing review of job classifications for competitiveness.”

And some FAQs:

  • Why did UI Health Care give the market adjustments to some employees?
    • UI Health Care continuously monitors the market to ensure that our salaries are competitive. At this time, nine areas were identified as most in need of adjustments to remain competitive in the market. Those areas include all PD20 staff nurses, and certain classifications for medical lab scientists, social workers, and specialized imaging technologists who work in areas such as CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and Interventional Radiology.
  • How many employees will receive a market adjustment in November?
    • Approximately 2,750 employees within nine classifications will receive a mid-year adjustment. This will include approximately 2,450 nurses, and 300 social workers, medical lab scientists and imaging technologists.
  • How much of a market adjustment did they get?
    • The adjustments ranged from 0.25% to 6%, depending on where the employees were in their pay range, their length of service and their specific job assignment.
  • How much is this costing UI Health Care?
    • The total cost for this mid-year market adjustment to salary and benefits is more than $2.5 million for this fiscal year.
  • Will these employees also be eligible for a raise in June, during our normal time for salary increases?
    • Yes. This increase will not impact any other increase that an employee may earn or be scheduled to receive on July 1,2020.
  • What is a market adjustment?
    • A market adjustment is intended to align an employee’s salary with the market value for the work being performed and is based on approved market data, education and related professional credentials, and years of experience.
  • Why does UI Health Care conduct market reviews?
    • As the demand for highly skilled talent increases, UI Health Care must conduct annual market reviews of job titles critical to our business and clinical operations. Performing regular market reviews helps the organization to:
      • Attract and retain qualified employees
      • Ensure the external competitiveness of our compensation structure
      • Be more responsive to local, regional, and national markets, when appropriate
      • Maintain compensation levels that are within UI Health Care’s ability to pay and preserve internal equity
  • What job classifications will you be reviewing next?
    • We will continue to do market adjustment reviews for clinical and non-clinical positions across UI Health Care.

Setting the Stage

With October almost at its end, I wanted to take a quick inventory of how I'm doing compared to previous years as far as posts I have published. Earlier today, I captured the statistics below. My analysis of the statistics is that there are 64 days between today and 1/1/2020. To publish the same number of posts in 2019 as I did in 2018, I need to publish 457 posts, which comes out to 7.140625 posts / day. Considering that I will likely not publish anything on 11/25/2019 and likely not publish anything on 12/25/2019 (Christmas), it really is 457/62 days, which is 7.370967741935484 posts / day. Rounding up to 8 would give me 496 posts, which would give me 1896 for the year, 39 above my 2018 total. No matter if it's 7.140625 posts / day or 7.370967741935484 posts / day, the end result is that I need to keep up with this blog. In fact, I will likely create a tab in an Excel file that will break down exactly how I will be able to either equal or exceed my 2018 total. When I published 270 posts in 2009, it took until 2013 before I published that many posts again. Then, in 2015, I published 69 fewer posts than I did in 2014. Comparing 2016 to 2017, I increased 143 posts.
Comparing 2017 to 2018, I increased 350 posts.
If I want to increase the average of the above period, I would need to increase my 2019 number by 247, which makes my new goal for 2019 the following:

2104

To do that, I would need to publish 11.35483870967742 posts each day for the next 62 days.

While I want to continue to increase published posts each year until I no longer write this blog, I also refuse to publish posts when I have nothing to say, which makes sense. How about I just write what I want, when I want, and do that.

Cancelled

Editor's Note: This was too long to put here.

Yesterday was the deadline for us to sign our contract with the hotel to proceed with next year’s Resurgent Gathering in Atlanta. I decided to cancel. Anyone who has registered will have their money full refunded by close of business today. As the annual conference is the way we have kept this site afloat and sustained my managing editor’s salary (full disclosure: I don’t earn income from the site, but others do), I know I am risking a lot. But I need you to understand why I am.

Over the last two weeks, many of us have criticized the NBA for refusing to be morally clear against the oppressive Chinese regime and its treatment towards Hong Kong and its ethnic and religious minorities. But here in this country, a distinguished military veteran with a long career in public service named Bill Taylor came forward with allegations of behavior he thought was abusive and/or illegal. I noticed friends of mine kindly just subtweeting me for defending Taylor’s character. Regardless of the veracity of his claims, Taylor is an honorable man who has served his country loyalty and he should not be dismissed based on a character assassination.

That episode as well as seeing conservatives pile on anything and everything the President sets his sights on got me thinking.

I do not want to put the speakers at my conference, the sponsors, or this site in awkward positions because I defend someone like Taylor or publicly disagree with the prevailing bro-conservative ideologies polluting social media. Trump supporters engage in cancel culture too and while I support President Trump, I frequently disagree with him. I could easily disagree with George W. Bush or Mitt Romney and no conservative would bat an eyelash. But as if to indicate how precarious the President’s supporters view his position, any sign of disagreement is met with hostility.

I don’t want to put myself in a position where I think I have to bite my tongue from saying something I think is true because doing so could risk the success of the conference or see a speaker back out. I don’t want to be held hostage to the conference and I don’t want to give any person, organization, or the mob power over my ability to be honest with my readers and radio listeners. I don’t want to be like the NBA and think I’ve got to not comment to keep others happy.

There is too much at stake for conservatism right now. The movement is overrun with grifters and bro-conservatism, which is an intellectual philosophy based on owning the left for shits and giggles. The bro-conservatives will behave exactly like the left and wield the power of the state against the left because, and say it with me now, “what has conservatism conserved?” In so doing, they will give the state power the left will surely use against them. But they won’t care because they’ll rationalize that the left would do it anyway and should the left win, all is lost anyway. Of course, this raises the important question of what the bro-conservatives will do when, as always happens in the cyclical nature of American politics, the left gets power back.

I have loved the format of the Resurgent Gathering. For two days, I sit on stage with politicians and policymakers and talk to them about public policy, their world views, their faith, and where we should go as a country. I would love to keep doing it. But 2020 is going to be tribally focused on the election and I do not see that there is room for a conference that goes deeper than owning the left without daring to put speakers and sponsors and myself in choppy water.

Maybe in 2021 people will finally want to have discussions about the future of the country from a conservative perspective that goes deeper than the President’s whims or owning the left.

My radio show continues to grow. We are self-syndicated and handling our own advertising, which makes for stronger relationships to weather the storm of daring to be an actual conservative who tries to view my politics through my faith without sycophantic cheerleading. The show is just in Georgia now, but has grown to a dozen stations in three months and will have a good many more in January after existing obligations at those stations are gone.

I hope, through the growth of the show, I will be able to keep the lights on here and come back to the conference after we get through next year. I am used to making leaps of faith and depending on the generosity of others and God. Wish me luck.

In the meantime, I’ll keep writing here as long as I can keep the lights on and telling you exactly what I think for better or worse and not feeling the need to toe a line to keep people happy.

If you want to donate to keep the site going, please go here now.

God bless,

Introducing Hawksley Workman

From an email I received today:
My new single, “Around Here,” was written on the heels of my 2019 record, Median Age Wasteland

The song is a meditation on belonging and the dark, slippery moments when love challenges…
When it slips from a feeling, into work, into a mission statement of mutual truths.

Watch the official video for “Around Here” on YouTube or stream it on Spotify SoundCloud.
Around Here” is the first single off of my upcoming new record, out in 2020.

Huge thanks to Indie88 for the kind premiere!

The track is a call to action to rise to the challenge of long-term, committed love: the sometimes uphill and banal kind. This call is to reaffirm, strengthen, and celebrate the long term commitment, the stumbles, the doubts, and to glorify humility.

Thanks for listening! I’m looking forward to seeing you on tour this fall and to share more music with you in the new year.
