The Mandalorian 3rd Season Continues

This was initially a simple post, with only the video below embedded in it. This is a screenshot of Version 1.0 of this post: ------------------->

You can consider there to now be a Version 2.0 of this post.

Why? Why would I take a simple post and turn it into a post with a lot more words?

Blame math.

I can hear your groan. Math helped me to figure out that this post represents the 130th post in the month of March, which is the sum of my posts in January (64) & February (66). I doubt that the sum of my posts on April 30, 2023, will be the sum of my posts in January (64), February (66), and March (130), which would be 260 as that would mean an average of 13 posts a day! For that calculation, I used the four full weeks of April to equal 20 days.

At this moment in time, I don't post to this blog on the weekend, which is something fairly recent. When I was trying to free up room on my cell phone at the beginning of March, I uninstalled the Blogger app from my cell phone. Side note, it was the Dropbox app that was taking up most of my storage room on my cell phone. I haven't reinstalled the Blogger app and don't plan to do so at this time. I'm open to doing so, especially when I might want to post while at a concert.

I think my next concert may not be until Saturday, April 29 in Des Moines with Alex. While we don't have tickets yet, I want to go see Every Avenue / Makeout / Unwell at Lefty's with him. I had such a good time at their show at Gabes in Iowa City at the beginning of March. It would be the first time when I could say that the last two concerts I saw were of the same bands on the same tour in different cities.

I am a geek when it comes to Star Wars. I credit videos like the one below for training my eyes to watch the screen actively and to be looking for Easter eggs and references to other aspects of the franchise. Some of the ideas in the video below were ones that I actually saw during my initial viewing of the episode while other ideas were new. For example, in the New Republic bar, there's a character who is making his live action debut after being included in one of the animated series that I don't watch. I might have seen a picture of the character before but I didn't know his name - it's the alien in the video preview below, on the right side, and no, I didn't plan that. I just want to make the point that videos like the one below enhance my own Star Wars experience. I dabble in a lot of subject matter areas (SMAs) - pro wrestling, Metallica, drums, technical writing, politics - and rely on videos like the one below to enhance my knowledge. I don't consider myself to be a subject matter expert (SME) in any of those areas.

I just realized I didn't mention the phone call on Monday night. I was home while Karen was at a hair appointment and our landline phone rang. On the other end was a woman in FL taking a poll about voters in Iowa. As we spoke, it became clear that she was basically calling on behalf of supporting Ron DeSantis, who may be a good candidate for president, but he hasn't declared he is running as of today. I secretly hope that Trump doesn't run because I believe the Dems / Libs are more scared of DeSantis than they are of Trump, but I digress. I want to report that I spoke to this woman for nearly 30 minutes. While I didn't agree with some of her statements, at the end of the conversation, she told me that I had done a really good job. Was she blowing smoke up my butt? Sure, that's certainly possible. For the record, I do like to speak politics - which is why I subscribe to The Daily Wire as well as why I have the "Get Your Political Opinions Here" pages on this blog. I have to be very conscious about who I am speaking politics with as I have seen politics divide families into two camps as well as friends divide into two camps. I love my family and I love my friends, I don't love politics more than my family and my friends, if that makes sense.

Anyways, here is the video about the Mandalorian:

Good Writing is Good Writing

Trevor Lee Hopkins
1975 - 2023
Obituary
Obituary of Trevor Lee Hopkins
Trevor Lee Hopkins, age 47 of Iowa City, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died suddenly of an apparent heart attack at his home in which he nicknamed “The Sunshine House,” on Friday, March 17, 2023.

A time for family and friends to gather will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service concluding with some words from family and friends beginning at 6:30 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to the Iowa City Bike Library or the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP).

Trevor Lee Hopkins was born July 22, 1975, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the son of William “Bill” C. and Bernetta “Bunny” Lee (Nehring) Hopkins. Following graduation from George Washington High School in 1993, he attended San Francisco State University for education in Sound Design and Music Production. Trevor has spent his entire working life in the fields of music, food, and making community connections. Growing up, he loved spending time at their family’s cabin and cooking up a storm in the kitchen. He also worked many hours in his dad’s business repairing 4-wheel drive vehicles, with a special affinity for Jeeps. His job titles included audio engineer, talent buyer, music producer, Little Village’s Distribution Manager, and cook. He liked his jobs, often holding 3 or 4 of them at once. He started his career in the music business at The Green Room and became an integral part of The Mill’s legacy. Most recently, he enjoyed his time as a cook for the University of Iowa mentoring and teaching students and cooking for his favorite, Bluder’s Bunch: the Iowa Women’s Basketball Team. Coach Bluder often credited their wins at home to their pregame meal.

Trevor had so many passions and wanted to share them with all he knew, doing so with love and selflessness. He was a friend to everyone and saw the best in people. His life’s mission was to, as he said it, “put people on stage” and that he did. Trevor was instrumental in starting the annual Mission Creek Festival and helping to save the Englert Theatre. As was so eloquently said, “if you have attended a show in Iowa City over the last few decades, chances are Trevor had something to do with it, and was one of the reasons it was a success.” His influence will continue to radiate in this community indefinitely.

Trevor loved playing the drums, the Packers, the Cubs, swimming, and biking. He loved to travel with his best friend, the love of his life, his wife, Ashlee. He was a serious and very good photographer and enjoyed politics and staying informed with all the news of the day. Most importantly he wanted everyone to have fun. Often not letting his mom, Bunny Lee, get off the phone until he got her to laugh.

Trevor’s family includes his wife, Ashlee Louise; his parents, Bill and Bunny Hopkins; sister and her husband, Tonia Louise and Jason Rowe; niece, Ella Rowe; nephew, Liam Rowe; father-in-law, Terry Davis; and sisters-in-law and their families, Taylor and Brandon Lawson and their children, Lucy and Milo, and Maycee and Trevor Piles and their children, Colin, Ashton, Bennett, Aubrey and Veda; and Trevor’s furry family, Nic, Dr. Levi Puppernicle Lee Hopkins and Lil’ Rosie.

Trevor was a man who never met a stranger, loved to make you happy and wanted you to laugh; simply cared about not only those he loved as family and friends, but truly those he had yet to meet and share his wit, humor, music, food, family, friends but most importantly his love for all.

LYRICS

Feeding on the wrath of man
Shot down
Traumatic
Time haunted by the past
Long gone
Dogmatic
Although the die is cast

Shot down
Volcanic
But what is done is done and done
Look back
Psychotic
No chance before this life began

Staring into black light
Dominating birthright

Wrath of man
Leaching through
Split in two

Wrath of man
Crash into
Point of view

Wrath of man
Violence
Inheritance

Wrath of man
Thrive upon
Feeding on
72 seasons gone

Feeding on the wrath of man
Shoot back
Erratic
Mad seasons take their toll
New mask
Chaotic
Completely lost control

Shoot back
Fanatic
Wither under looming shadow cast
Slip back
Narcotic
Blinded by the ashes of the past

Staring into black light
Choking on the stage fright

Wrath of man
Leaching through
Split in two

Wrath of man
Crash into
Point of view

Wrath of man
Violence
Inheritance

Wrath of man
Thrive upon
Feeding on
72 seasons gone

Piercing through
Cut in two
Polarize

Point of view
Crash into
Paralyze

Feeding on the wrath of man
Man down
Barbaric
Quick fire machine gun thoughts
Deep seed
Stigmatic
Some have and some have not

Man down
Demonic
No mercy from the ghost within
Turn back
Hypnotic
There’s breathing out but not back in

Staring into black light
Permanently midnight

Wrath of man
Leaching through
Split in two

Wrath of man
Crash into

One Second from Every Episode-Roseanne

I know my favorite mother-in-law cannot stand Roseanne, but I never really minded her. Sure, she's a very abrasive character in the original series. However, there are enough "seconds" in the video embedded below that remind me of authentic and non-abrasive moments in the original series. For example, the original series confronted spousal abuse as well as raising children. While I don't think I would ask for parenting advice, I do think that there are moments when Roseanne was a really good TV mom. I also think that her character understood when to pour on the abrasiveness and when to be a good person. I also liked the original series because there were occasional episodes where both Roseanne and Dan (her TV husband) dealt with their own marriage as well as their relationship with their parents and Jackie (Roseanne's sister) throughout the series. When Jackie was hit by her husband, it was Dan who confronted the husband - his name escapes me - and ended up in jail. I thought that proved he was a fantastic brother-in-law. I realize that one second of every episode is only a brief sample of the original series and, I can say this, there are many other "seconds" in the various episodes I might have chosen. Yet, this is a great compilation video - I'd assign a solid B to it as a grade, which also means it is worth the time it takes to watch it.

How to ask for a Raise

Honestly, I have never asked for a raise during my 28 years of working as a Technical Writer. At each employer, there was either a yearly pay increase or I wasn't at the company long enough to go through a yearly pay increase. That said, this seems like good advice.
https://youtu.be/ eE44BbhLx6o - How to ask for a Raise

Editor's Note: Per this post - Can't Unsee, I did ask for a raise at my first job as a Technical Writer. Per the post, I wanted to increase my salary from $18,000 / year to $20,000 / year and, per that post, it never happened.

Things I Never Knew About Skiing

There was a time in my life when I wanted to "live" as either a ski instructor or ski patrol dude. I remember going to Sundown in Dubuque when I was in junior high (40ish years ago) and even into my freshman & sophomore years of high school. I remember watching the ski patrol staff as they jumped to the front of the line for the ski lift, going down the black diamond hill called the Gunbarrel with ease, and, in general, while I didn't understand the mechanics of what it would take to be a ski instructor or a ski patrol dude, I knew the destination. This was further reinforced when I saw the ski instructors and ski patrol dudes in CO at Keystone and Breckenridge. I thought that would be the life.

Of course, it was 40ish years ago when I remember seeing "Hot Dog: The Movie" - released trailer below - and really wanting to live the life depicted in the movie!

Fast forward to 2023. I haven't been to Sundown in Dubuque since 1990. My skis are long gone, sold at our garage sale in the mid-1990s. I've had a meniscus (knee) surgery and the idea of returning to Sundown in Dubuque isn't what I'd like to do and here's a reality check: I wasn't ever good enough to be a ski instructor or ski patrol dude. However, with that as context, I enjoyed reading this article: Things I Never Knew About Skiing Until I Was a Private Instructor in Aspen - Slopeside shenanigans, gallons of sprayed Champagne, celebrities behaving badly, and… ski gangs? It’s all in a day’s work at Aspen.

Editor's Note: Here's a review of "Hot Dog: The Movie" from Amazon Product Reviews - Hot Dog: The Movie: - note that the movie always had sex & nudity - now the DVD has 3 more minutes! ... Sigh... if I were 13, I would be buying it... and so would you! <grin>

It's Never Too Late to Change the Rest of Your Life

https://www.youtube.com/live/TQKOybSC_08 - It's Never Too Late to Change the Rest of Your Life

This Album is 13 Years Old!

I never saw Ratt in concert. As of this moment, I predict Infestation will be their final album. From Wikipedia:
Infestation is the seventh studio album by American glam metal band Ratt. It is the band's first original effort since their self-titled album in 1999, and the first album since the death of Robbin Crosby in 2002. This is the only album to feature guitarist Carlos Cavazo, formerly of Quiet Riot. The band would enter a turbulent time after the edition of the album, and by 2018 all musicians in it had left the band, except lead singer Stephen Pearcy. It was released by Loud & Proud via Roadrunner Records, a then-sub-label of their longtime home Atlantic Records.

In a February 17, 2010 interview with the Artisan News Service, Stephen Pearcy said of Infestation: "We wanted this to be like something that we would have written right after [1984's] Out of the Cellar. We definitely went back to basics with the mind set of a band with a lot of excitement and some great songs to get out."
In a March 18, 2010 interview with Metalholic Magazine, guitarist Warren DeMartini said of Infestation: "It really exceeded our expectations. Conceptually we kind of wanted to revisit the period of Out of the Cellar and Invasion of Your Privacy. We were sort of loosely trying to shoot for something that could fit between those two records. We were looking for more uptempo ideas and the double leads that Robbin Crosby and I started doing back in 1983."
In the US, the album debuted at No. 30, selling around 14,000 copies, making it Ratt's highest charting album since 1990. The album has since gone on to sell over 50,000 copies in the US.

BR in ID

Alex and I watched the episode of "Bar Rescue" that was mentioned in this article: Hideaway Bar & Grill of Meridian, ID, is on “Bar Rescue” | Idaho Statesman. Basically, that article is crap. All it does is complain about the show and the premise of the show. Instead, why not actually reach out to the people in the episode and get a follow-up story. That would be an interesting story. Complaining about a series on TV is not worthy of the bytes required.

What is a TWer

From https://componize.com/day-in-the-life-story-of-a-tech-writer
A technical writer is someone who helps people to understand how to use things like computers, mobile phones, machines, toys, and even medication. After the writer talks to the engineers who built or created the thing they need to write about, a technical writer then imagines they are the person that has to use the machine and finds a way to explain how to use, repair or maintain it in a way that is easy for them to understand.
This way, even if you’re not an expert yourself, you can learn how to use the things you need to use or how and when to take the medicine.

Not the Result I was Wanting

This will be a recap of the 2022-2023 season with a bit of optimism about the 2023-2024 team. First, the bad news: Iowa lost yesterday.

While this loss is not the result any Iowa Hawkeye fan was wanting, the team that lost this game will only lose two seniors - Connor McCaffery
