The End for Barta?

Leistikow: Meyer ruling could spell end for Gary Barta
  1. I like Gary Barta's motto: Observe daily, evaluate annually
  2. This is a BIG statement: University leadership — including president Bruce Harreld, who last year gave Barta a whopping raise and contract extension that guaranteed him $4.6 million through 2021 — has a big decision ahead.
Stay tuned - I'm sure there will be more to this story in the next few days / weeks / months / years.

Editor's Note: This post was composed on Tuesday, 12/6/2016, when I thought there was a zero percent chance that I'd be in North Carolina today. I think it'd be a great 3 day festival. On the same day, I checked for the Memphis in May 2017 lineup, which is the same weekend, and only saw this:
Personally, I think the Memphis in May organization needs to make their announcement around this time the year before because it's possible that these two festivals are competing for the same dollar. The only way Memphis in May 2017 happens is if Metallica is playing <grin>. Since they are playing two weeks later in Columbus, OH, who knows what will happen.

Update: On Friday, February 10, 2017, I purchased tickets for Alex and I to attend the Chicago Open Air concert in July 2017. On Monday, February 13, 2017, Metallica announced a 25 date summer tour with two area shows, which are discussed in this post.

Update: On Wednesday, February 15, 2017, I checked the Memphis in May page and saw this:

What I've Been Doing At Work

I want to state where I am with the disaster recovery documentation I am writing at work. In my opinion, the term 'disaster recovery' is as big as the world so what I want to do is to reduce it to a concept that is easily understandable. Therefore, what I have done is divided the term 'disaster recovery' into 5 phases:
  1. Activation and Notification Phase - this phase is all about figuring out there is a disaster, what plan is going to be followed, and alerting anyone that will be impacted by the disaster that there will be an interruption to the systems they routinely use.
  2. Pre-System Recovery Phase - specific to my project, there are 16 critical systems. Some of those systems are what you might think of as applications - Microsoft Word - while others are systems that you might think of as prerequisite systems - Microsoft Windows - as a limited in scope example. I am thinking only about the fact that Microsoft Windows is a prerequisite to using Microsoft Word. Thus, this phase is about restoring the prerequisite systems that are required to be in place before restoring other systems.
  3. System Recovery Phase - This phase is all about restoring the systems that are used by end-users, such as Microsoft Word within the context of the example in the Pre-System Recovery Phase.
  4. Service Recovery Phase - this phase is all about testing and validating that the systems have been restored. For example, continuing the Microsoft Windows / Microsoft Word example, this phase would be about opening Microsoft Word and verifying that it actually opens and functions.
  5. Return to Normal Operations Phase - this phase is all about alerting anyone that will be impacted by the disaster that the interruption to the systems they routinely use is over. Anyone that routinely uses a system should be able to use it again, as if the disaster never happened even though we all know it did. <grin>
I won't go into additional details on this blog but that is the mile-high view of my daily work.

Style Guide Meetings Suck Everywhere

"crybabies" brings to mind a particularly emotional meeting of the tech writing team that I once worked with.

As editor, I decided that we needed to nail down a style guide. My supervisor *suggested* that it would be good for team-building to hold regular meetings to try to get consensus on points of style, so I resigned myself to a process that I knew would just be unproductive chaos.

By the third meeting, I was bracing myself for yet another futile debate over whether to add punctuation to bulleted list points; which would absolutely be a battle of pedantics, as the previous meetings had been.

Instead, somebody started complaining about the fact that I used red ink to edit the hard copies of their work (as was the norm back in those days). They felt that red was "too violent and upsetting", and I should use green or purple ink instead. When I tried to reason that red ink just stands out best, things went off the rails, as each person chimed in with their "ethical" 2 cents about ink colors, and egos ran wild.

That was the last style meeting I called.

Ethical issues in technical writing arise when your employer or client wants you to put things in documents that you know are false, like safety certifications for products you know haven't had their safety evaluated, or to leave out critical items like hazard warnings.

Worrying about about questions of correct grammar vs jargon in noncritical verbiage that doesn't impact actual usage may be a little bit pedantic, but being a little bit pedantic is one of the things technical writers are paid to do. Being VERY pedantic and conflating pedantic matters with "ethics" is one reason why many people regard technical writers as crybabies.

Humbling to Be So Out of Touch

These bands played at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
The 2017 event was held on April 14-16 and on April 21-23.

It's really humbling to see this list of bands and realize I recognize exactly 3 - Radiohead, Lady Gaga, New Order - bands on the list and, of those 3, I can hum a Lady Gaga tune. I thought I was in touch with the music world, but now I feel like I'm on another planet!

Best Midwest Date is a Wednesday in Chicago

I like Sacred Reich, especially the tunes "I Never Said Good-bye" and "Crawling" so when I saw the headline that they were going on a world tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band, I was hopeful they would come near me.

Nope.

The closest date they have on tour is playing in Chicago on a Wednesday (9/20) so I will not be able to see them in concert.

More Fodder for Copyeditor at the CRG

From: Double standard? University of Iowa volleyball coach not fired after parent complaints of verbal abuse ... Former University of Iowa Deputy Athletics Director says he would have fired Jane Meyer for yelling at her boss:

After reading the article, I'm wondering if there was a double standard. Seriously, don't we all want to be treated the same? If I do something awesome at work while working on a team, I want to be as recognized as my teammates. I get that.

But then comes my curse of seeing both sides. There are likely other circumstances that were not brought into light during Barta's testimony about how he handles discipline issues. Maybe Barta met with the volleyball coach and heard the other side of the story about why the coach was doing what he did. I can tell you the hair on the back of my neck was raised when it was the parents who complained about the way their daughter was being treated. I can see parents doing that in elementary, junior high, and possibly high school. This is a college student. The step after college is a job. Who's to say this student won't find herself in a situation where her boss is not the nicest human being on the planet? Will she expect her parents to speak to her boss on her behalf? When does the cord get cut?

This trial has suddenly become more interesting to me.

Tunes I've Been Digging

I really REALLY like this tune by Tiny Stills.

Modern Rock

Interesting, but Never Going to Happen

I came across http://rsync.net/pricing.html and saw their pricing information:

I then looked at my "main" external hard drives, b: & y: which have a combined size of 2803.53 GB, which is 2.80353 TB, so I fall into the $.06 rate.

2.80353 x .06 = $168.21 / month or $2018.52 / year.

I'm barely at 28% of the 10+ Terabytes range and even if I could reach that level, it'd be $400 / month or $4800 / year!!!!

Uh.

No.

Not going to happen.

Under The Radar

One thing that flew under my radar was that there was a WWE PPV last night (4/30/17). Here are the results:
WWE Payback 2017 Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights, which points out one of the many takeaways is that Braun Strowman defeated Roman Reigns. As the article points out, it could be setting up a match between Brock Lesnar & Braun Strowman in the future. Personally, I don't like that matchup. I don't really care about Strowman - yes, he's a 'big & powerful destructive force' but that doesn't mean I relate to his character (I do not) - or Lesnar, who only has Paul Heyman speaking as Lesnar's "advocate." Don't get me wrong, Heyman's promos are top notch but, unless Lesnar cannot speak, I don't feel like I'm engaged with his character. At least with Roman Reigns, who I consider to be cut from the same cookie cutter as Strowman and Lesnar, he will speak. I'm curious how the fallout from last night's PPV plays out on tonight's episode of Raw.

One thing I noticed, which no one has been writing about a lot, is that Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins (former teammates in the Shield) are now all on Monday Night Raw's show. There used to be talk about a Shield reunion. Now would be an opportune time to see that, in my opinion.
