Just Let Everyone In

I wish "pro-immigration" protesters would just be honest. Make a sign that says, "Starting now, ANYONE can come inside America with ZERO vetting. Murderers or not, it doesn't matter." That's what they want, right? And if you're going to abolish ICE, what is going to replace it? It's easy to decry a federal agency, right?

Here's a capture-worthy comment from "Tornado Chaser" that I don't want to forget:

I love the Iron Man - Captain America relationship in Civil War! I think it makes complete sense. It demonstrates more than anything the character development that has occurred for the characters. It's true that before, Cap would firmly side with the government, and Iron Man would firmly side against it, but due to events that have unfolded over the years, they've changed as people. Back in Iron Man 2, Tony completely refused to give his technology to the government, but after the events of Age of Ultron, he saw the damage he could cause due to his own reckless attitude, as Ultron caused massive damage, destruction, and human casualties. The angry mother blaming Tony for her son's death cemented his position. Tony is visibly more weathered by the many challenging things he's had to endure in Civil War - the anxiety attacks, the constant worry of an impending alien attack, and guilt. On the other hand, Cap has become completely jaded by the government after the events of The Winter Soldier, seeing that Hydra had infiltrated the government and secretly been there for decades, as well as brainwashed his best friend and turned him into an assassin. His trust in the government has been broken and it's never coming back. As he said in Civil War, the government is "run by people with agendas, and agendas change".
I also never saw Cap as grumpy, he could be seen as plain and boring, but he was always a beacon of hope due to his unwavering and well-defined morality, that could never be shaken in the face of even insurmountable odds.

I found it under this video:

I love the kind of analysis Tornado Chaser made. The comment lays out an argument and then backs it up with much more than the boring and mundane "because I said so, I'm right" illogical argument. "I want home videos and our pictures burned to DVDs." "Why?" "Because I want a DVD." If the response is "Because I want to have a second backup for our memories," what argument can be made against that?!? It's the "because I [want] / [said so]" argument that kills a discussion. "I want to live in [this city] when I retire." "I don't want to live in [that city] when I retire." There's a lot to be said about finding compromises in life. I can say to my wife, "I want to buy concert tickets for 10 concerts that are going to be in the area" and she can reply, "10 concerts are too many, what about picking the 3 with the highest priority instead?" There's an offer in that response that can be negotiated. I can say to my wife, "I want to buy concert tickets for 10 concerts that are going to be in the area" and she can reply, "No." There's no offer in that response.

Build a New Arena in Coralville! They will still Skip Iowa

Coralville is building a new stadium near Iowa River Landing (IRL), which is located by exit 242 on I-80. Historical nugget: IRL is located where a country bar called The Red Stallion that Karen and I used to go to with friends for a night of boozing and dancing used to be located. Anyways, I'm not convinced the new arena being built is going to draw a band like T-Rextasy to Iowa. This is their current tour:

NY BASED PUNK QUEENS T-REXTASY UNVEIL MUSIC VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE GIRL, FRIEND OUT 6/20 ON DANGER COLLECTIVE

+ ANNOUNCE 30 DATES FOR NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR

New York, NY, June 20 - Today, New York based punk queens T-Rextasy reveal the music video for their new single Girl, Friend, out 6/20 on Danger Collective. This is the band’s first release since their critically-acclaimed debut, “Jurassic Punk” (2016) that earned praise from Rob Sheffield at Rolling Stone and NPR Music.
T-Rextasy performed over 100 gigs in 2017 and will bring their spectacular and theatrical show to 30 cities in North America this summer. The band will donate part of their merchandise earnings to various organizations supporting LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive justice.

The quirky and evocative film for Girl, Friend, powered by unbridled riffs and whimsical lyrics, finds T-Rextasy members Annie, Ebun, Lyris and Vera in their colorful “Pool of Luv”, hoping to snag the hearts of passersby.

The video for Girl, Friend was co-directed by Annie Fidoten and Emily Cohn and shot in Inspiration Point in Washington Heights.

While the Dino Dames are lounging in an inviting posture, they soon realize that the visitors aren’t enamored of them and prefer building their own romance in their “Pool of Luv”. As Annie explains: “The video for Girl, Friend is centered around the forlorn cupids of T-Rextasy, who have decided to set up a match-making scheme to facilitate queer summer love, but end up more and more devastated as everyone finds a match except themselves.”

Despite a joyful narrative, the video evokes the realities individuals face upon questioning their sexual orientation and embracing it. At first, the “Pool of Luv” is a radiant and blissful place, where protagonists hope to explore and experience their blossoming queerness. But then, a watershed ensues, and members of T-Rextasy are left aside.
.
Annie had this to say about it: “The concept of the video was centered around something we've chatted about on long stretches of tour driving-- the myth of instant queer love. There's this funny idea sometimes that it's "easier" to be gay, that the minute you come out you just u-haul yourself up, find your love, live your dream etc. A lot of the songs we've been writing try to look at the messy edges of it all, all the fumbles and false starts and scary moments of trying to be your "real" self. That's what I was trying to get at in making this video.”

For Annie, self-discovery is a process and “doesn’t stop when you come out as gay. People think that it’s easier once you claim it, but it’s not true; your problems don’t simply vanish.”

Committed to intersectional feminism and the power of community, the group mobilizes their live act and social media platforms to raise awareness on issues such as prison abolition, LGBTQ+ rights, and reproductive justice. On previous tours, they have donated part of their merchandise earnings to the following organizations: Make the Road New York, CLPP, Planned Parenthood, Black Student Alliance @ University of Virginia, Black and Pink, Black Mama's Bail Out.

During their sets, the group acknowledges the indigenous communities originating from each city and land they are performing upon. Annie adds: “Our songs are not all political. But our actions are; without action, it means very little.”

The band intentionally curate inclusive bills for every performance. Lyris explains their process:”We are trying to build a network through touring by connecting with bands and aiming to do our part in upholding resources that support bands that are not cis white men.”

This summer, T-Rextasy will take their rapturous live show on an extensive 30-date tour. They are colorful fashionistas who’s stage presence is undeniable: charismatic and scenic, they are as generous on stage as they are in their lives. A tireless band, enthralling unanimous and diverse crowds, they played 100 sets in 2017 alone, making stops at festivals like SXSW and Brooklyn’s Northside Festival. Spectacular antics, neon ensembles, synchronized dancing, and audience participation make their show memorable: part performance art, part carnival act, part rock gig.

The first T-Rextasy LP, "Jurassic Punk", released on May 20, 2016 on Father/Daughter Records, earned praise from Rob Sheffield at Rolling Stone who included “Gap Yr Boiz” in his Top 25 Songs of 2016 and dubbed them “Hyper-verbal rock & roll goddesses”. NPR Music said “The music of T-Rextasy is an impeccable combination of sarcastic, swaggering humor and timeless pop-punk grooves,” adding, “T-Rextasy delivers flawless punk-rock guitar riffs and snappy ska-infused bass lines embedded in intentional, radical politics.”

Thumbs Up for Q's Operation Mindcrime

For soooo many years, Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" album was the only Queensryche release I would mention when discussing the band, which is why, I suspect, seeing this guy in Espionage wearing a t-shirt with that album on his t-shirt made me smile.

Loudwire lists two tracks from the album on their list of the 10 Best Queensryche songs - here - which I think is rather low. My personal favorite Q tune is "One and Only" - especially at this part, which the drummer in the video below NAILS perfectly.

He also nailed Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" here:

S Me

While the subject of the email I received tries to sell this sync tool as a way to "sync large files with friends and family," I see potential in using it as a way to store a backup of my music files. This is important because I have one of my PCs unplugged at home, which BackBlaze is not pleased about:

Backblaze has been unable to backup one of your hard drives for more than 21 days. Please connect any disconnected hard drives now to avoid data deletion from your backup on the computer named: W7_YYYY_MM_DD

Why is this important? Backblaze backs up your data, and data on additional hard drives looks like data on your computer. If you remove a hard drive it looks like that data has been deleted. Backblaze keeps data for 30 days after it gets removed from your computers, and this is true for additional hard drives that are unplugged too. If you'd like to learn more about how Backblaze interacts with multiple hard drives, please read our External Drive FAQ.

In order to ensure that your hard drive's data continues being backed up, please:
• Connect all hard drives
• Turn on your computer and connect it to the internet
• Make sure Backblaze is running
• Leave it running for at least a few hours.

Sigh.

I just really need to bite the bullet & purchase a second 8 TB external hard drive from Best Buy for ~$175 and be done. I've stewed about going down during my lunch hour for a couple of weeks now and I just need to do it. I figure I can actually store ~7 TB on a 8 TB external hard drive and for my 'main' external hard drives, I have

Styx in WI Dells

Remember back in November 2017, when I wrote about how Karen was going to Wisconsin Dells, WI, for a "Women's Weekend Away" and that Styx happened to be playing in town that weekend? I just came across these videos from the gig I didn't see. Todd Sucherman, their drummer, was on fire that night!!

How is your marriage doing?

This was in an email I received from David Robbins, FamilyLife CEO, and I thought it was worth capturing on my blog:

Just like every car needs an oil change every few months, we need a gut check or a tune-up in our marriages.

So, how is your marriage doing?

It's not always easy to take a hard look at where your marriage needs work, but asking the tough questions can actually bring you closer to your spouse.

Reading this, you may be thinking, "Oh, I can DEFINITELY tell you where my spouse needs fixing..." But I'd like to encourage you to take a look at your own heart as well.

To help you evaluate your marriage and how well you're pursuing unity with your spouse, we've put together a short quiz called How Well Are You Communicating With Your Spouse?

This quiz will help you see how you communicate with your spouse and offer some suggestions and resources to improve your communication and overall health of your marriage.

I'd love for you to take advantage of this free resource to assess how you are communicating with your spouse.

You can take the quiz at this link.

I hope the results of this quiz offer an opportunity for you and your spouse to have a conversation about where you can improve your relationship. Unity in your marriage is so important, and we want to help you have intentional conversations that draw you closer together - no matter how far you may have drifted away from it.

I am so grateful for you, and I am encouraged by your desire to build a healthy marriage. Please know that FamilyLife is committed to helping you in any way we can. I pray that your marriage will be strengthened through this resource, so it clearly reflects Jesus to those around you.

Ghostly Sandman

From Watch Ghost Honor Metallica With Blistering 'Enter Sandman' Lars Ulrich talks band's unlikely rise after receiving music's "Nobel Prize":

Ulrich seemed humbled as he described Metallica's mainstream breakthrough in the late-Eighties and early-Nineties, and he closed his remarks saying, "Receiving this prize solidifies the idea that no matter how alienated you feel, connecting to other people through music is not only possible but can be outright inspirational and life changing."

Just BACK OFF Ulrich Haters!

Good for Washington!

Growing up, Cedar Rapids Washington (CRW) was a rival high school in the southeast quarter of Cedar Rapids. The southeast quarter of Cedar Rapids is unique because it is where you can go down Bever Avenue and transition from expensive housing to cheap and (sometimes) run-down housing. As I think I've mentioned, I was a swimmer during each of my 4 years in high school and the CRW boy's swim team was dominant. Like, really dominant! I know none of the 4 teams I was on won against CRW at a dual meet and I suspect their dominance has continued. Some of the guys on the CRW boy's swim team were good guys - nice, friendly, personable - while others thought their shit had no odor for one reason or another.

All that said, I am happy to read that, at long last, Cedar Rapids Washington softball is victorious [as the] Warriors split with Dubuque Senior to snap a 55-game skid. I hope it is the first of many victories this season.

Editor's Note: Both "Washington High School" and "softball" are labels that were added thanks to this post.

New Idea

Instead of up-around x 3, I went up 1 and around 11 times in 18 minutes for 2593 steps. I used a green marker for tracking my laps. I will try to do it again each working day until next Friday, to get back into walking shape. The first half of June has been bad for me walking. To be at half of the steps that I recorded last month, I should have 170979 steps.

I have 118293, after what I walked this morning.

I need to average 13513 each day for the next 15 days to equal the 341958 steps that I walked in May.

Yeah... Sure thing!

NOT!!

Shoddy Sound Quality

This page - http://www.hennemusic.com/2018/06/video-guns-n-roses-stream-shadow-of.html - includes this video - https://www.facebook.com/gunsnroses/videos/10156518171678069/ - of the new Guns-n-Roses tune called "Shadow of Your Love." I get why Guns-n-Roses made the video of their new tune available (because it's a new tune) but the video has shoddy sound quality. I much prefer the way Metallica releases their "MetOnTour" videos, which are mixed prior to releasing the video.

I Want It

When someone says they want pictures and home videos burned to DVDs, instead of uploading both assets to Cloud storage, and offer only "I want it [a DVD of the pictures and home videos]" as their reason why, it's a conversation killer. There's no point in continuing the discussion. How do you argue point-counterpoint when there is no point? Ben Shapiro;s article - No, 'Star Wars' Isn't Failing Because Of Hateful Trolls. It's Failing Because Kathleen Kennedy Has Done A Garbage Job. by Ben Shapiro - points this out when he writes about the legion of Star Wars fans that don't like what Kathleen Kennedy has done with the Star Wars franchise in recent years. He lays out his argument as follows:

Kennedy had two choices upon being granted the helm of the Star Wars universe:
  1. fast-forward fifty years, beyond the original characters, and reboot, losing the nostalgia of the original characters but gaining freshness;
  2. recast the original characters and pick up where Return of the Jedi left off.
Instead, in fully risk averse fashion, she chose door leech off the nostalgia while introducing new characters a few years in the future.

I like Ben Shapiro, as a political commentator because of the way he breaks down whatever he is talking about in a way that makes sense to me. I like passages like this:

Calling your audience a bunch of deplorables didn’t work well for Hillary Clinton; it’s not going to work well for Disney, either.

That said, my take on the whole "Star Wars Haters" crowd is that they are very similar to music fans by which I mean that if a band makes an album that sounds like their previous one - looking at you AC/DC - the band is written off as simply rewriting their previous album. If a band makes an album that sounds nothing like their previous one to the casual listener - looking at you Metallica - the band is written off as trying to be hip to the modern music scene. The fans that wrote off Metallica claim that they haven't sounded good since "And Justice for All" and that they stopped caring about Metallica when they "sold out" and released the "Black" album. Those same fans want an album that sounds like "Master of Puppets" but I suspect have also been the ones adoring "Spit Out the Bone" on "Hardwired to Self-Destruct" (their latest album) and that album's final track. They write off the opening track as a rehash of other Metallica fast-tempo tunes ("Battery" or "Damage Inc." come to mind) before going on to praise "Spit Out the Bone." Personally, I have no problem with "Spit Out the Bone" as a tune - it's fantastic and exciting and interesting. What gets me is that these same fans also would have no issue if Metallica played "Fade to Black," which is their ballad from their second album. Wait. If you want Metallica to be "heavy" like their first four albums, then why is it okay for the band to release "Fade to Black" on their second album but not "Nothing Else Matters" on their fifth album? I would argue those two tunes follow the same pattern of starting out slow before transitioning to the more aggressive ending, but I don't have a degree in music - just English.

The Metallica fans that have wrote off the band's recent tunes are the same as the Star Wars fans that have wrote off both the prequel trilogy as well as "The Force Awakens," "Rogue One," "The Last Jedi" and, most recently, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" as not being up to par of the original trilogy, but when you ask them about any of those movies they have wrote off, they claim ignorance and say, "I haven't seen any of them but I know about them." That's illogical and both Sheldon Cooper and Spock - two fictional characters that enjoy arguments based upon logic, not emotion, would love.

There's also this article - Can 'Star Wars' Survive Kathleen Kennedy's Critically Acclaimed Box Office Hits? - but I am using this post to talk about the Shapiro article because "I want it."

Glenn Campbell - I"m not Gonna Miss You

I think I just found my funeral tune.

[Lyrics Glen Campbell - I'm Not Gonna Miss You]
I'm still here, but yet I'm gone
I don't play guitar or sing my songs
They never defined who I am
The man that loves you 'til the end

You're the last person I will love
You're the last face I will recall
And best of all, I'm not gonna miss you
Not gonna miss you

I'm never gonna hold you like I did
Or say I love you to the kids
You're never gonna see it in my eyes
It's not gonna hurt me when you cry

I'm never gonna know what you go through
All the things I say or do
All the hurt and all the pain
One thing selfishly remains
I'm not gonna miss you
I'm not gonna miss you

Which is it: played more than 9000 or performed live over 9000 times

This is a case when the author of this blurb ran out of data points and repeated what had already been mentioned.

I would have 'published' the following:

French is most famous for his role as the founding member and one of the guitarists of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister. Since his first performances with Twisted Sister, French has played more than 9000 concert performances. Being an avid runner, French has also completed two New York Marathons, in 1981 and 1986. As a guitar player, manager, producer and executive producer, French has sold over 20 million albums, and performed in 34 countries and performed live over 9,000 times.

I think that eliminates the clunky "performed" and "performed" construction.

CBJ News

From my "Corridor Business Journal" email that I received today at 8:03 AM:

UIHC needs millions to dissolve health alliance

University of Iowa Health Care needs to spend $9.5 million to fully dissolve the UI Health Alliance, a network of four regional providers the university said it would leave earlier this year, the Gazette reports. UIHC on Wednesday told the state's Board of Regents it needs $7.5 million "to meet cash flow requirements to facilitate discontinuance," and another $2 million to cover "residual cash flows of UI Community Connect projects," which worked to bring IT infrastructure to health care providers. UIHC is seeking to transfer that money to a separate nonprofit, UI Health System, which manages the alliance - a move that has some precedent. The regents last approved a $30 million transfer in 2014 to help the alliance develop a "clinically integrated network capable of pooling their collective abilities and knowledge."

Why I Do Not Regret NOT Reading the Iowa City Press-Citizen

It seems like a lifetime ago, but I used to mock the Iowa City Press-Citizen for their writing. I have a spiral notebook, somewhere, with clippings from the newspaper that are awe-inspiring stupid. The one I remember most vividly is the caption under a picture that said a driver was "driving east from Iowa to Nebraska" - and because it's a caption, it means the driver either said it wrong and the reporter quoted him correctly or the reporter heard the general context of what the driver was saying and wrote the caption independent of a direct quote from the driver. In either scenario, that's just stupidity.

When I saw the caption below at the eye doctor in the waiting area, I felt like writing "...bats during aa game at..." ranks up there as being equally stupid as driving east from Iowa to get to Nebraska. To do so would require driving to a state like North Carolina, getting on a ship and riding on it with your car to Europe, then driving across Europe and Asia up to Alaska, then south to Washington state and then down to Colorado to get to Nebraska so you can be driving east to get to Nebraska. Do the editors at this newspaper have eyes?

Ludicrous speed anyone?!?

I know it's live because at this point - https://youtu.be/XKaST7sII-E?t=907 - his son comes in to tell him "good news and good news - what do you want to hear first?" Love it! This is Rob Brown's 26:15 long practice video! I want the click he is playing along to in this video!!!

Not a Huge DB Fan

There's a radio station (98.5 in Iowa City) that claims it plays "smart rock" on its station. Whenever Rock 108 plays Nine Inch Nails or Deftones or Filter (c'mon - do I really need to hear "Hey Man Nice Shot" again?!?) or Aerosmith (please! if "Walk This Way" has to be played, mix it up with the Run DMC collaboration just to mess with people), I change to their station. When I got in the truck this AM, the radio was set at 98.5 and, when this song began, I didn't change it. I'm not a huge Doobie Brothers fan - I've never had "The Doobie Brothers" as a label on any of the 6000ish posts on this blog - but I respect what they've done. I have their 'greatest hits' tunes and, on occasion, I give that a spin.

My all-time favorite DB tune is "China Grove" because I love the guitar riff:
