Get Ready For “The Metal Legions” Tour Featuring IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, TESTAMENT & More
Seeing Iron Maiden & Judas Priest would satisfy the requirement of seeing those two iconic heavy metal bands prior to my death. Testament would be awesome while Obituary? Not on the top of my list. This Would be A Dream Job!
I love the idea that "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" there was a need for technical writers to create an owner's manual for Han Solo's ship. In this galaxy, in the here and now, writing the book described in this article - Star Wars: Millennium Falcon: Owner’s Workshop Manual! - would be an awesome job. However, since there's not a way for me to apply for it, I won't apply for that position.

I was 3458 days old (9 years, 5 months, 2 weeks, 6 days) when KISS' Dynasty was released 40 years ago on 5/24/1979. We had this album, and its follow-up Unmasked on 8-track tape.

To Impeach Or Not To Impeach
Here's my take on whether President Trump should be impeached.
I haven't seen any other commentator talking about this situation in the way I'm thinking about it.
I think no one in the Democratic party is thinking about the 'what if we do impeach President Trump?' scenario. I think that if the Democrats were able to get Trump out of office, they would have Vice-President Mike Pence assume the presidency.
Name one Democrat who likes Mike Pence.
Exactly.
I think that what Sharpiro is talking about in the video above makes a lot of sense. Trump is falling into the plan of the Democrats to paint him as being uncooperative because, in fact, he is being uncooperative. He should have done what Shapiro says about "You are saying mean and terrible things about me, but I'm here to work in a bi-partisan fashion. These are all the items we need to include." Then, if the Democrats walk away, who has the upper hand politically? Trump.
In conclusion, I think the 29 House members calling for a Trump impeachment inquiry are 29 of Trump's political enemies. Until they can specify exactly what he is trying to cover up, they don't have me convinced they are doing anything other than playing a game of politics.

According to the window, it will be 32 days until the synch is complete, but I sincerely believe it will be complete much sooner than that. Thanks to https://www.timeanddate.com/date/durationresult.html, I now know that the job has been running for 13 hours, 37 minutes and 49 seconds. I also know the following:

Hello DOS Resource!
I use DOS commands daily at work. I know, I know, I should learn PowerShell or Python or some other scripting language, but I know what I know, which is DOS. Until Windows is rebuilt without it, I'll use it. Thus, I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to learn more than I know now about DOS. That's why, on Displaying the Command Prompt Window, I posted this comment:
A response to that comment has now introduced me to this site - http://ss64.com - a brand-new (to me) website!
I've noticed that on other posts, there are URLs that are listed to other sites that provide additional details about the page. Since DOS commands are so vast and there are so many sites that are about DOS commands, I wonder if there could be a list of URLs that have been helpful to the author.
A response to that comment has now introduced me to this site - http://ss64.com - a brand-new (to me) website!
Excellent Marketing
I'd really like to ask Stephen Taylor, who sent me the email to the right, how many times he has been asked, "How much is your "Transforming Your Practice Time" series?" I would hope the answer is "zero" and that would be awesome because this email is a great example of writing that is targeted for an audience and is constructed nearly flawlessly.
The email starts with a greeting, followed by 4 lines. Within those 4 lines, the word "free" is use twice. That is then followed by a link with the word free. Then comes a sentence that tells the target audience (drummers) that many drummers ("tens of thousands drummers") have already "gone through this series of lessons." Then there's a line of text that asks a question, followed by an answer in italics, followed by the author's testimony and credibility for offering the free series.
My one quibble with this email is the paragraph that shifts the tone. These two sentences stick out from the rest of the email, which has been written in short bursts:
This course will be entirely focused on developing a predictable daily practice routine that yields results and allows you to leave your practice time happy and satisfied. It will be about revolutionizing your practice time so that you can stop having practice guilt and start enjoying your playing.
I wanted to know if I was off-base with how long those sentences are so I pasted them into MS Word to do a quick Word Count to verify my initial thought. Sadly, I was correct. 48 words in two sentences, split as 27 words in the first sentence and 21 words in the second sentence.
It's not so much the length of the sentences that I quibble about: it's the change in tone, shifting to the future tense. "This course will be entirely focused" reads like the course hasn't been created yet, like it is still in progress.
Here's a stab at rewriting those two sentences:
You will develop your daily practice routine, leaving your practice time happy and satisfied.
Revolutionize your practice time and leave practice guilt behind. You want to enjoy your playing, right? That's why you're a drummer - you enjoy playing drums! This FREE series brings the opportunity to do just that - ENJOY DRUMMING!
If it were my email, I would rewrite the first two sentences, and then split the next three sentences into a separate paragraph, and push the final sentence, which is the last sales pitch (for a free series) in the email, like this:
This course will be entirely focused on developing a predictable daily practice routine that yields results and allows you to leave your practice time happy and satisfied. It will be about revolutionizing your practice time so that you can stop having practice guilt and start enjoying your playing.
The really cool thing is, it won't be just your practice time that improves. Being happy and content with your playing leads to a happier and more productive life outside of the practice room as well. It is going to be a COMPLETE BRAIN DUMP of everything I know about the art of practicing.
I am going to show you how to construct a methodical and predictable daily practice routine that lets you maximize every minute of practice you put in.
I'm not pretending that I am a marketing writing guru, but I am a technical writer who has been writing text professionally for 8867 days (24 years, 3 months, 1 week, 5 days). My analysis of this email is a result of learning about writing during that time.

The Box
Jason Warburg runs dailyvault.com, which is one of the websites for which I wrote music reviews... when I did that. Yesterday, he posted The Box on his website and it is definitely worth reading. I related to the idea of having to clean out a work area because of having the misfortune of being employed in a position that had been eliminated.
Sometimes, though, it goes the other way. I'm thinking about last month, when Jason reached out to me, as he had done in prior years, to ask whether I was going to write music reviews. As you can see on this page, I am now listed in the Alumni section at the bottom of the page. Below is the redacted email conversation, but I'll offer a summary first not nearly as long as the email thread. Here it is:
This is the email thread:
I shouldn't do a word count comparison between the number of words in my summary paragraph and the email thread because I don't want to know that the above summary is longer than the emails below.

I don't have a passion for writing music reviews. I used to, I want to have it, but I don't. Given the choice between writing a music review or pretty much anything else, I am likely to choose "anything else." It makes me very sad because I experienced a lot of great things as a music reviewer. My CD collection is likely 80% promo CDs, many that introduced me to bands I cherish. I would not have been introduced to Count the Stars, Bigwig, or my beloved Bayside if I had not wrote music reviews for the years that I did. That said, I don't have the juice. I fully recognize that actions speak louder than words and promising to Jason that I will find time to write music reviews when the passion for doing so is unfair and disrespectful, in a way, to the years I actively wrote and had music reviews published on the website.
This is the email thread:

Well, I think it’s finally time to put me on the alumni list. I was actually thinking about it the other day so it’s funny that you sent your query. I have had opportunities to write reviews
of the Bayside albums I haven’t reviewed
of the Shinedown / Godsmack concert last July
of the Papa Roach / Chevelle concert last August
of the Breaking Benjamin / 5FDP concert in November
of the Bayside show on January 30th, 2019
of the Shinedown / Papa Roach / Asking Alexandria concert in March
and…. Where are they?
Exactly.
It seems as though my ambition & drive to write music reviews has evaporated entirely. I also think I’ve put you off at least a couple of times, saying, “Oh yeah! I’m going to write soon!” … and that’s not fair.
In other news, there’s this going on in my life, plus my wife turns 50 in May, my daughter graduates from college in May, as do two of my nephews from high school. Somehow, I want to find time to play drums in a band. Our first gig was last night and it was the 2nd time we ever played together… so be gentle: https://www.facebook.com/koopandcompany/videos/454104305333182

Hi folks,
Hope everyone is well – or at least feeling better than I am after a bout with bronchitis… right now I feel like a two-year-old could probably pin me while pounding a sippy cup full of milk with the other hand. But enough about me (and my grandson).
I’m writing to all of you – yes, all – with two requests:
1. If you’ve been thinking about writing and/or finishing a review, it would be fantastic if you could find some time to do that soon.
2. If you’ve been thinking “Hey, my friend/relative/acquaintance ______ is really into music and a good writer, I should really connect them with Jason and Melanie,” it would be fantastic if you could find some time to do that soon, also.
We’ve had a good run the last few years with a nice balance of prolific and not-as-prolific writers (I’m in the latter camp) keeping things humming along. I want to say in this context that everyone on staff has been very upfront with me about what their capacity is and when they will and won’t be able to produce in the near future. Thanks for that – it is super helpful to your editor.
It’s remarkable how things can turn, though. Pete is currently taking a well-deserved break of a few weeks, and Ben has decided he needs to back off to Contributing Writer status for the time being. The thing is, that was all it took to drop us to five new reviews a week, a schedule we’re now on for the third week in a row. Not to single anyone out, and no pressure, but, ahem, in case no one else has noticed, Tom is kind of carrying us right now. That’s awesome of him, but also not really the idea here… many voices and all the variety we can muster is kind of our gig.
So: step one is me making the above requests. Step two is me posting an invitation on social media for prospective new writers to apply. In the past writers have usually found their way to us, rather than us going out looking, and almost always with serendipitous timing. I’ll continue to hope that will be the case here, but in the meantime, I’m taking these steps and will definitely appreciate any help you can offer. Take care --
Best,
Jason

Of Course Not!
Do I think I'm qualified to be a "Network Security Engineer" at BACKBLAZE? Of course not! I just thought it was interesting that in the two weeks since the position was posted, there have been 152 applicants, which comes out to 10.85714285714286 applicants a day. If applicants only applied during the M - F, 8 - 5 timeframe (80 hours), that means that there were 1.9 applicants every hour of those 2 weeks.
For the record, my work is still awesome. I enjoy my job and I continue to look forward to ending my career here.

Last Night on the GC
Last night, Alex and I played golf on the Quail Creek Golf Course. He won - shooting a 60 and I shot a 64. I tell people that I want my 20 year-old son to play better than me, a nearly 50 year-old dad.
This is a picture of how gorgeous of a night it was on the golf course.

Rollins
I don't believe I realized what a masterful speaker and storyteller Henry Rollins is. I have to believe that because I vaguely remember he did a concert in Des Moines within the last few years and when I read that he was going to be doing a concert, I didn't have any interest in investigating what it would be like.
I'm a dumb ASS for not doing so.
This video came up as a suggestion so I listened to it. I love the way he talks.
Warning! Henry Rollins is an adult and uses adult words!
After I listened to his stories about Van Halen and Diamond Dave, I wanted to hear more. The video below was set up to play next so I started listening to it.
I adore the first line - When I was 15 and heard the song "Iron Man," my life changed. It is precisely the type of opening sentence I want to write every time I write, whether for pleasure or in a Knowledge Article or in my Disaster Recovery documentation or within any technical writing content that crosses my desk today, tomorrow, and each workday thereafter for the next 16 years, 10 months, 1 week, 4 days (6160 days). The writing is captivating and entertaining and informative. Thus, for the next 9:26, listened to Henry Rollins.
Then I looked around for a youtube playlist of the album called Provoked and didn't find one. I did find the following videos. They will be living in my ears for the foreseeable future!

Do I Pull the Trigger?
I'll probably ponder this idea for another hour.
Tim, my cubicle neighbor, told me that Best Buy has their 10 TB EHDs on sale for $159. I looked online and the Coralville store has 1 (ONE!) left! I am hesitating only because I still don't have a clear backup / replication strategy in place. I have 8427 duplicate files that I'm about to clean up. It's really tempting to just pull the trigger and get it.
The rational / logical side of me thinks about whether I really need two 10 TB EHDs within my collection of EHDs. In the following list, all numbers represent the TB capacity for that EHD:
The question I have to answer is: if I already have 57 TB capacity, why do I need 67 TB?!? Add into the equation that I have a Dropbox account (~$10 / month) and I have a BackBlaze account (~$99 / year) continuously backing up my file also backing up my files. Are my files that important?!?
