Slayer into 2019

While Slayer extending their final tour is good news, I'm willing to bet $100 that their tour extension will NOT include a concert in Iowa. I don't envision that the US Cellular Center (Cedar Rapids), Wells Fargo Arena (Des Moines), or Whatever The Mark Is Called Now (Moline, IL) can snag a date. It's even less likely that Slayer would add a stop at Five Flags (Dubuque), Kinnick Stadium (Iowa City) or Riverside Casino (Riverside). Thus, if I wanted to Slayer one last time, I would need to travel to a city like Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, or Minneapolis. I can't help but think back to Chicago Open Air 2017 and the choice I made to have great seats for Ozzy Osbourne on the floor instead of watching Slayer, who headlined the second stage after Stone Sour finished on the main stage. Maybe I should have gone over to watch Slayer and, yes, if I had known it was going to likely be the final time I could see them, then yes, of course, I would have watched them.

I wrote the above after I read this article: Slayer extend farewell tour into 2019

Editor's Note: As of 8/20/2019, I am going to see Slayer a final time!!

Legendary heavy metal band Slayer confirmed the last leg of their The Final Campaign farewell tour. The 18-date run will feature support from Primus, Ministry and Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals at each stop.
Slayer and the other three bands kicks off the run at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville on November 2. The tour continues with stops in Raleigh, Salem (Virginia), Hershey, Springfield (Massachusetts), New York City, Louisville, Columbus, Moline (Illinois), Sioux Falls, Fargo, Omaha, Colorado Springs, Billings, Spokane, Oakland and Las Vegas. All four acts bring the run to a close and Slayer ends their touring career at The Forum in Los Angeles on November 30.
Anselmo and his band will perform a full set of Pantera classics each night.

Ok. I give up :>(

Is it funny or sad that one of the most recent dialogues on the Techwr-L list ended in giving up. Today's discussion between Rick Quatro & Robert Lauriston was a back-and-forth of "point" followed by "counterpoint" until Rick gave up instead of arguing the likelihood of having trouble remembering that page 86 comes after page 85.

Editor's Note: This is the file Robert linked to when he wrote "Adobe doesn't do it any more either."

Giving It Up - Easy? Hard?

Was it easy for me to give up booze?

I've pondered this question within my private journal, but I don't recall writing about this aspect elsewhere on this blog. I know I was not drinking as much as Ric Flair - the video below reveals where Ric Flair was up to 15 drinks a day - so perhaps it's apples & oranges to compare when I drank booze to when Ric Flair drank booze. Perhaps.

When I'm being honest, I'd answer "Yes" if I were asked, "Have there been any times when you thought, "I would be having a beer right now if I hadn't made my choice to not drink booze and I know it would taste really good?" That said, I'm glad I chose to not drink booze. As I've said elsewhere on this blog, I am trying to be the best me I can be to my wife, to my kids, to my other family members, to my friends, and to strangers I encounter only once in my life. I am convinced, being the best version of me means that I don't drink booze. Am I perfect without booze? OF COURSE NOT!!!! Good heavens NO!!! I believe that without booze, I have a better chance of being the best version of me than with booze.

Top 10 Avengers Fight Scenes

When I have a desire to learn something, I research it. I saw the following video & thought it'd be cool to list the "Top 10 Avengers Fight Scenes" but starting with 10, going down to 1. After doing the research, I now know how and because of that, I have a feeling that, I will use it in my daily work as a technical writer within my disaster recovery documentation and knowledge management projects.

Here's the video.

Here's the fruit of my labor.

  1. Iron Man v. Loki
  2. Hawkeye v. Black Widow
  3. Vision's Birth
  4. Loki v. Hulk
  5. Captain America v. Ultron
  6. Hulk "I'm Always Angry"
  7. Avengers v. Ultron
  8. Iron Man v. Thor
  9. Hulk v. Thor
  10. Surprise!!!

Here's what I did to achieve my desired results.

  1. Opened Google.com and entered this search string: li html tag counting down
  2. Clicked the first result.
  3. Clicked Try It Yourself
    • This was the page that opened.
  4. This is where it got interesting. In the Try It Yourself window, I entered the following.
  5. When I pasted that code into the Blogger HTML editor, I didn't see the same result as shown above. Instead, in the Blogger HTML editor, I entered the following.
  6. That's how I got the list above to display starting with 10, going down to 1.
Editor's Note: I tried to use the above code on 9-19-2022 for a different post and the HTML code doesn't work. Probably has to do with the version of Firefox I am using.

Something terrible happened. Ugh...

One of the good things that has come to light in the last few months is discovering NAOMI, a musician that creates videos for her tunes. I received this email yesterday at 2:29 PM:

From: NAOMI [mailto:info=naomi.band@mail15.suw13.rsgsv.net] On Behalf Of NAOMI

Something terrible happened:(

Hiho, friends!
Naomi here.

A lot of you maybe already know this - but a lot of you don't. About two months ago a hacker took over my Facebook band page and wiped out EVERYTHING. I had just released my new music video ""Cake" and was getting really good results with it...but then the hacker took it down. He then, one by one, deleted my followers, all of my content, and replaced it all with softcore nude photos. I went through the whole rigmarole with Facebook trying to regain my page. I even sent them screenshots of the hacker saying, "I'm hacking you, if you don't do *insert demand* then I will destroy your page." Facebook didn't care. I was devastated. I had worked SO hard to gain all of my followers organically and was really proud of my small, but mighty, group of engaged followers.

Well, after a couple weeks of sulking around in my misery, I booted up a new page and am back at it. I don't even have half of the followers I used to have, but that's ok. Little by little, I'll gain my following again.

One thing I've learned: all of us that run our businesses or brands on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube (or any social media platform, really) are at the mercy of them. If THEY go down, WE go down. That's why having an email list is SO important. Email is probably the most secure and stable form of communication a business or brand or band can ever have with their followers. That and a website...mine is HERE.

(If you haven't followed me on my new Facebook page yet, go HERE! And share it with your friends, too!)

So, to you reading this, thank you. Thanks for giving me your email address so we can stay in touch.

I know this isn't a fancy email, I don't have much time right now, but I want to tell you about a few fun things coming up:

1) I have a gig coming up in Cedar Rapids. It'll be on September 1st at NewBo City Market for the 2018 Women's Music Festival. I'll be playing at 7pm.

2) I have a new music video and song coming out! My patrons on Patreon will be able to see it by the end of the month. The rest of you will have to wait until September! If you wanna become a patron, go HERE.

3) I'm pretty sure I'm adding a 5th member to my band! Currently, NAOMI is a 4-piece. Since my recorded music has SO. MANY. PARTS to it, we play to backing tracks. We have synth lines and trumpets and extra background vox pump through the speakers to give us a more 'accurate' sound. I really don't love playing with backing tracks because it's just so limiting...you HAVE to follow the tracks...no room for deviation. So having the 5th member will allow us to be free (mostly) from the backing tracks! I'll make an official announcement about who that person is as soon as we get a good photoshoot together, naturally.

That's all for now, friends. Thank you for being a NAOMI supporter. It really does mean a lot.

I'll send you another email as soon as my video is viewable to the public! ANDDD I'm gonna give you something special for FREE when it's out because I just think you're the greatest.

Ok, love you in a non-creepy way,
- Naomi

BtP Opens New Doors

Ministry is not a band I'm familiar with whatsoever. I'm aware they existed - they could be broken up or together, I don't know without looking at wikipedia - so hearing Burn the Priest cover their tune gave me reason to listen to this tune. Prior to changing their name to Lamb of God, Burn the Priest is what they called themselves.

That's a decent tune.

When I think about Chris Adler, Lamb of God's drummer, I think nothing but positive thoughts. I interviewed Chris Adler prior to Lamb of God's gig in Cedar Rapids, IA, nearly a decade ago and, as a person, as a drummer, I will never say anything negative about him. While I respect the musical abilities of the other members of Lamb of God, I am just not a huge fan of Randy Blythe's vocals. I know the band caught some flack when they released a tune with "clean vocals" but my gosh, I don't like his vocals!

Call me old school, but I would really enjoy learning what he's singing about! I know they can do better - I've heard really good vocals in "The Duke" and cannot accept the screaming another moment!

Editor's Note: The label for "Ministry" was added because of this post.

Ironic or Hypocritical?

In my opinion, it's closer to being hypocritical that the woman's Windows desktop is clean and her 'real' desktop is not.
Maybe that's why I stick with technical writing instead of cartoon captioning...

Could It Be?

High hopes stirred within my soul over the weekend, but that's nothing new. It's super easy for me to feel excited when I see this type of  "drummer wanted" ad. I just crossed the 5 year anniversary of the Kalona gig with Lou's Classic Ride (which turned out to be our last) as well as the 4 year anniversary of the Elk's Club gig with Uncle Rico the Band (which turned out to be our last). Yet, I have high hopes that some sort of Ideal Band will grow out of this.
This is the response I sent back:
|
I'm a young 48 - 2 in college, ready to gig. Sorry, I don't come with a huge ego and I am not a bunch of drama - I have both an acoustic set and an electronic set, which might be applicable to what you are seeking, as the brain has a lot of sounds.

This is me. Poke around and you will likely learn more about me: http://prhmusic.blogspot.com/p/videos-of-me-playing-drums.html

What's on your setlist?
|
And to that inquiry, I received this response:
Thank you for the message! I’ll take a look and get back to you this week with more info.
Later, I received a setlist:
  1. Time Bomb – Iration
  2. Wagon Wheel – Old Crow Medicine Show
  3. What I got – Sublime
  4. Teenage Dream – Katy Perry
  5. Semi Charmed Life – Third Eye Blind
  6. Shape of You – Ed Sheeran
  7. Take it Easy – Eagles
  8. Havana – Camila Cabello
  9. Santeria – Sublime
  10. 500 Miles – The Proclaimers
  11. Your Love – The Outfield
    • Long Intro
    • Short Intro
  12. Hey Girl – OAR
  13. Stir it up – Bob Marley
  14. Steal My Kisses – Ben Harper
  15. Breakdown – Tom Petty
  16. Cheap Thrills – Sia
  17. Feelin’ Alright – Rebelution
  18. Sugar – Maroon 5
  19. I’m Yours – Jason Mraz
I should be snarky and quip, "promises, promises," and allow this opportunity to pile up next to the previous high hope and the one next to that and the one next to that until I have a HUGE pile of evaporated into nothingness opportunities. Hopefully, something materializes. My new goal is kind of funny. I turn 49 in December. My goal is to be playing in a regularly gigging band no later than December 2019 so that the band can advertise its December gig as

Paul's 50th Birthday Bash!

I personally think that would be awesome sauce ...

HHH v The Rock

Wide-Ranging Post Promises to Discuss Broken Promises

A relevant Star Wars Universe quote and me impersonating a Star Wars Universe character to make my point should set the tone for this post:

  1. As Anakin Skywalker said, "If you're not with me, then you're against me."
  2. As Yoda might say, "Trusting are you too much."
Now, on with the topic. On the ACT Jobs site - https://careers-act.icims.com/jobs/intro - I searched for the word "Pearson" because I wanted to know if any of the ACT job descriptions mentioned working with employees at Pearson - I was curious. During my job hunt in January 2016, if I had found an ACT job with the word "Pearson," I would not have applied since I had just been laid off from Pearson. I was very surprised when I saw the following search result:

I clicked the link and again searched for "Pearson" because there was a search result that made a promise to me that if I looked at that search result, I would find the information I wanted.

It's the same bogus search result I used to see at Pearson when I would search for the word "jetty" and see a search result, only to have a search on the search result be a false promise. In the "jetty" situation, the word is on the page - you just need to expand multiple drop-downs in order to see it and, once you find it, you may think that there is only one instance of the word, but you'd be wrong.

See, no page-level result:

But when you look at the code, Jetty is there:

I think there should never be situations like these examples when a user cannot find the information they are seeking.

K of C Statement

Worthy Chaplains and Dear Brother Knights,
The issues that have come to light concerning sexual abuse by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report are cause for grave concern among Catholics and Brother Knights. Many feel deeply betrayed by those whom they long held in high regard. Such concerns are shared not just in the United States, but in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere.

These sins of commission and omission have sent the Church we love, the Church we serve and the Church that Jesus Christ established into convulsions. Sadly, the disgrace not only is borne by the perpetrators, it hurts us all, as does the silence of shepherds who have ignored the cries of their flocks.

There are many wonderful and faithful laborers in the vineyard of the Lord among our priests and bishops. However, it is clear that in addition to devastating criminal acts, we have seen many other moral failings by clergy that represent a crisis of commitment to the Gospel.

Too often the needs of victims have been subordinated to a distorted sense of mercy toward the perpetrators or an instinct for clerical self-preservation. The sexual acts — both criminal and non-criminal — highlight the need to recover a respect for and a renewed commitment to the priestly promises of celibacy.

The Knights of Columbus has supported the pastoral and charitable work of our bishops and priests since our founding by the Venerable Father Michael McGivney. We understand that the priest should lead the parish and the bishop should be the center of unity in a diocese.  But we — like all Catholics — are painfully aware of the wreckage that ensues when elements of this leadership are abdicated by evil actions whether directly perpetrated or covered up.

Now, the Knights of Columbus — laymen, priests and chaplains together — will have an important role to play in rebuilding the Church. We must commit the Knights of Columbus to work for repentance, reform and rebuilding of the Church.

Repentance should include a full accounting of the misdeeds by those who have committed them. Archbishop McCarrick and others at fault owe us a full account of their actions, motivations and cover-ups. After years of having us confess to them, it is now time for them to come clean about what they have done and what they have failed to do.

This will also help increase the recognition that clerical sexual abuse is a global problem that must be addressed at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. Moreover, priests and bishops who refuse to live according to their promises of celibacy should be removed from public ministry, not out of retribution, but for the protection of the faithful and to prevent future variations of the scandal we now suffer.

Reform must include many good ideas that have been proposed, such as a full and complete investigation of sexual abuse led by an independent commission that includes laity; complete transparency by the Catholic hierarchy into all matters of criminal sexual misconduct past or future; an expansion of the zero tolerance policy to include sexual activity or misconduct by clerics including bishops, and by seminarians; and a call for faithfulness by all members of the clergy, including bishops. There must also be an independent ethics hotline for reporting of criminal and other conduct at odds with Catholic teaching on the clerical state of life; and there must be protections against retaliation.

Such reforms will be difficult for a Church largely unused to them, and we must support our bishops and our priests in embracing these reforms in order to rebuild.

We can help to rebuild our Church in several ways. Above all else, Knights — and our chaplains — must embrace love of God and love of neighbor. This is Christ’s great commandment and the founding mission of our Order. It is also exactly the opposite of the rejection of God and exploitation of neighbor that our Church has witnessed in these scandals.

Shortly before becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger decried the “filth” in the Church “even among those, who in the priesthood, ought to belong totally” to Christ. He also provided the antidote, stating at other times that what the Church needs now more than anything else is “saints.” Pope Francis reiterated Pope Benedict’s sentiments in his letter on Aug. 20.

In the days ahead, the Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ. I take this opportunity to ask that you offer this Novena of Masses for our Church at your earliest opportunity.

Beginning in November, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor, in cooperation with the Shrine of St. Jean Vianney in Ars, France, a national tour of the relic of the heart of this great patron saint of priests. In the coming weeks, I will share more details with you about this initiative.

We will also continue to strengthen and rebuild our Church at the level of our families and parishes through our Building the Domestic Church program. Its twin elements of imbuing families with faith and strengthening parish life are critical to providing a Catholic Church that rebuilds based on the Gospel principles of love of God and love of neighbor. Together with our recently announced “Faith In Action” initiative, we will strive to make our parishes truly become, in the words of Pope Francis, “a family of families.”

Now is the time for all brother Knights to stand steadfast in faith, as Catholics and as gentlemen. We will assist priests, bishops and our fellow Catholics in helping the Church chart a course for the future that puts Christ at the center, so that truly we may say, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
This is the moment in which Knights — including in a special way our priest members — can be part of a great renewal for good in our Church. And as we strive to follow the Lord more closely in the days ahead, may he deliver us from every evil and in his mercy graciously grant his Church peace and unity.
In closing, know that your faithful witness and sacrifice can bring inspiration and hope to millions of your fellow Catholics. It will be needed in the days ahead more than ever before.  And to every priest and bishop whose commitment and dedication to our Order and to our Church has been faithful and exemplary, please accept my gratitude in both a personal way and on behalf of the Knights of Columbus.

Let each one of us prayerfully invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that in the words of St. Maximilian Kolbe, our hearts would be cleansed and themselves become immaculate, similar and like unto her own heart.

Fraternally,
Carl A. Anderson

Clear and Concise Wins the Gig

I don't believe I will ever need to book a show (or attempt to book a show) at the Hi Tone Cafe in Memphis, TN (which is a really cool place I visited during my trips to Memphis in May in both 2003 & 2007). That said, I really like how their Band Booking page is concise:
I especially like that the last sentence, which spells out how far in advance they book bands. Thus, if I wanted to book a band there now, the earliest I could would be October 1, which is 6 weeks from today.
