The National Advanced Driving Simulator research center seeks a Head of Communications that will contribute to the center's research mission by communicating NADS research to targeted audiences and working with NADS leadership to lead campaigns and outreach efforts. The incumbent will be expected to develop strategic communications plans to ensure the creative delivery of web content, social media, story-telling, and communications and outreach products such as factsheets, presentations, and news releases.
The Head of Communications, NADS will initially spend 50%-time supporting the Automated Driving Systems (ADS) for Rural America. This major grant is a 2.5-year demonstration project aiming to collect data on ADS applications for aging, transportation-challenged rural populations. The project will require a highly-coordinated communications effort, both internally with the project team and USDOT, as well as externally with community stakeholders, to ensure the demonstration's success for and with the general public.

Job Duties Include

  • Expand and promote the public's knowledge of NADS research, its partners, and the importance of its research goals.
  • Write stories/articles for use in departmental/collegiate/university publications.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media, conduct media outreach and respond to inquiries from media in coordination with the University of Iowa Office of Strategic Communications and the College of Engineering.
  • Develop and maintain a social media plan that includes regular and innovative updates to NADS Facebook, Twitter accounts, news feed on webpage, and emerging social media outlets.
  • Engage in open, timely, and efficient communications with sponsors, stakeholders, and partners, including local governments, local elected officials, and stakeholders to grow and maintain support for the ADS for Rural America project.

About The National Advanced Driving Simulator

The National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS) is a self-sustained transportation safety research center in the University of Iowa's College of Engineering. Funded by government and industry, NADS utilizes its suite of world-class driving simulators and instrumented on-road vehicles to conduct research studies for the private and public sectors. Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive (typically defined as one or more years) of outreach or marketing experience.
Demonstrated experience developing and writing material for public consumption.
Experience developing and maintaining content for websites and/or social media.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

Master's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with recording and editing videos for digital platforms.
Knowledge of graphic design, publication production, printing requirements and web design/editing.
Working experience or coursework in a STEM-related field.
Possess a valid U.S. driving license and be able to meet the University of Iowa's Fleet Safety requirements.
