No

I recommend watching "13 Reasons Why,"  which is a series on Netflix. I have watched both seasons that have been released and while I liked Season 1 a bit more than Season 2, I will simply say I know what I'm talking about:

This article is bullshit:

Youth Suicide Rates Increased Following '13 Reasons Why' Debut

The only thing the article gets right is that there is a suicide by a high school student. The series then marches through how that suicide affects 13 other people that the high school student claims contributed to her decision to commit suicide. It's really ironic that the same site that runs this article about "13 Reasons Why" also recently ran an article in which the medical professional quoted in the article said that the phrase "commit suicide" is not accurate because "commit" is what happens when you do something you should be ashamed of: murder, being committed to a mental health ward, etc. and that suicide is not like that.

I didn't agree with that article either.

What I told my sister-in-law when she and I were discussing potential binge-worthy shows on Netflix is that yes, there is a suicide on the show. What I saw in the show is how devastated the high school student's friends are by what the high school character chose to do. Her parents are a wreck and their marriage falls apart. Another girl begins drinking booze. And there are many other sub-plots that I can't even mention.

I think that some scenes with the high school character's parents are devastating, especially the flashback scenes when conversations that seemed like a BIG DEAL at the moment really weren't, in the BIG PICTURE of the lives of these characters.

Music Festivals Are Gross!

Music Festivals Are Gross!

I relate to this comment in the sense that when Alex and I saw Metallica / Avenged Sevenfold / Volbeat at the Newton Speedway in Newton, Iowa, on Friday, June 9, 2017, we stood in the hot sun from ~1 PM until sundown. We were not up against the railing, like "Ms. T" was, but we were packed like sardines. Three songs into Metallica's set, Alex told me that he didn't feel good and so, with my son's welfare in mind, we walked out of that massive crowd back to the racetrack where it felt like we could actually breathe. I do not think I would willingly return to a situation like the one in Newton - especially during the summer - without some sort of guarantee that we'd be able to go get water or go to the bathroom and get our places back. That said, we had a good system figured out by the time we went to the Chicago Open Air concert a month later.

'Avengers: Endgame' pulls a Thanos on box office records

Yesterday, on a Sunday AM, I drove to the Coral Ridge Mall, paid $6.36 at 7:15-ish AM at an automated kiosk to purchase a ticket for the 8 AM showing of "Avengers: Endgame" with ~30 others who were standing in line when the manager opened the gate to the theater.

I won't say another word about going because it feels like EVERY WORD leads to ANOTHER WORD with the potential to SPOIL the movie for someone. I stayed away from spoilers and that was a good decision.

"Avengers: Endgame" shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally, reaching a new pinnacle in the blockbuster era that the comic-book studio has come to dominate. Marvel's "Avengers" finale far exceeded even its own gargantuan expectations, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie had been forecast to open between $260 million and $300 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, but moviegoers turned out in such droves that "Endgame" blew past the previous record of $257.7 million, set last year by "Avengers: Infinity War" when it narrowly surpassed "The Force Awakens." "Endgame" was just as enormous overseas, obliterating the previous record of $640.5 million, also set by "Infinity War."

Synch Saturday

I was up and about this AM for North Liberty Cleanup Day. It so happens that the place where I dropped off white plastic chairs, a grill, wood that used to be a cabinet in the furnace storage room, and some yard waste is located near my building. Thus, since it's raining and because Karen has a cold and is unlikely to be up before 9 AM, I came into work. I kicked off a synch job:

This is the progress of the synch job when I was about to leave at 9 AM:

This is my sister-in-law singing.

Someone actually playing those Ludwig drums would be awesome!

Technology can screw up the best of intentions, but first, some really good news.

Kosha!, a rapper that sends me emails about what he's up to, played at Coachella. It's really good news because I have a very low probability of attending and playing Coachella. He's doing something I am not going to be able to do and I'm happy for him. While I would have loved to see someone actually playing those Ludwig drums, seeing him on stage made me smile:

Now the not-so-good news.

In addition to the picture above, the email promises 10 things that happened to me at Coachella aka Matzahchella in the bold text. Look at the list though. I'm zeroing in on item number 6, 3rd line, 10 words in from the left margin. Do you see it? This is what I see:

7.I drank 127 bottles of water.

Then look what happened in the very next line. It starts with item number 7, which ultimately means that there is not a list item number 10.

I was going to write back to Kosha! and point out what I saw so I clicked Reply.

It gets worse as I saw this:

Technology is a cruel mistress with no tolerance.

What a Lineup!

If I had not already purchased tickets for the Phil Collins concert on Friday, October 11, 2019, in Omaha, NE, I would be VERY VERY interested in going to Manchester, TN, for the Exit 111 concert because this lineup is absolutely KILLER!

Per a quick Google search, the drive to Manchester, TN, from my house would be 10 hours, 8 minutes:

Of course, if I were going that far, I would get a VIP ticket.

Still Here Forever and Ever

I saw this:

which led me to this:

which led me to the same conclusion as any of my other posts assigned the "Awesome jobs that I won't apply for" label, which is this:

Damn, I'm happy where I work. I got up @ 4:30 AM and was sitting at my desk @ 5 AM, creating links between the MS Word documents in the S:\Disaster Recovery Planning\CTE\Wired Data Network\WAN folder and my Disaster Recovery documentation in RoboHelp 2015. I'm where I WANT to be. At 8:05 AM - one hour from now - I'll call into the daily IT/Bio Morning Huddle conference call as my manager's proxy. At 9 AM, I'll call my co-worker Teresa who is working remotely from Atlantic, IA, so she can care for her 90 year-old mother so that we can make final changes within Naavia to the Knowledge Management workflow. There is a Core Group meeting a week from today and the goal is to send out the Knowledge Management workflow in a Word file to the Core Group today so that the attendees have a week to review in preparation for the meeting on May 2. After the Core Group meeting on May 2, there will be a Steering Committee meeting in June during which the Knowledge Management workflow will be presented and, hopefully, approved by that Steering Committee. After that happens, there will likely be a period of time during which changes are made to our ESC system to facilitate the Knowledge Management workflow before, eventually, we will begin a Pilot program with a specific group within the department before rolling out the Knowledge Management workflow to the entire department.
Yesterday, I met with my manager and we discussed the Disaster Recovery project. I told him I want to finish with the creating links between the MS Word documents in the S:\Disaster Recovery Planning folder by the end of the day on April 30th so that, on May 1st, I can begin rounding back to the teams that have been asked to create / update their disaster recovery documentation in the S:\Disaster Recovery Planning folder to gauge their status.

Cold

I know I would feel differently if I worked at Google.

But I don't.

When I either retire or die, someone will need to do the work I do at work on a daily basis. I will be replaced. It's what a business does. The purpose of a business is to make money. It's not a living thing - it's inanimate. It doesn't go out to hurt anyone because it's like a lawn mower. Your lawn mower doesn't decide to run over a flower - you, operating the mower, decide.

I don't read anything wrong with the following blurb from this article:

Whittaker writes that Google said she would have to abandon her work at New York University's AI Now Institute, which she co-founded and also works on, in order to remain at Google. Stapleton, a 12-year veteran of Google who most recently worked in YouTube's marketing department, says she was told she would lose half of her reports and that a previously approved project was being killed.

It doesn't matter to me if Whittaker co-founded a project or not. My hope is that when Google is making these decisions about transitioning an employee to another position, it's a decision based upon succeeding.
Again, I know I would feel differently if I worked at Google.

But I don't.

Whittaker alleges that it was in retaliation for walking out of work back in November. No one hired Whittaker (or any of the other employees who walked out) to be anything other than a body to do a task. It's harsh, but think about it.

I have worked at five companies before I started working where I work now. Just because I left does not mean that there is not a need for a technical writer so, if the company values customer service (or in one case, is still in business!), the company would hire someone to replace me to do the work I did when I worked there.

If you are working at a company and don't do the work for which you were hired or the work for which you were hired is no longer helping the company - and I don't give a damn if you think you were hired to do anything other than what your boss says you need to do - you should be moved to a different part of the company.

Period.

I used to document a system that was not helping the company so development of that system was halted and the resources assigned to working on the development of that system were reassigned.

Again, I know I would feel differently if I worked at Google.

But I don't.

Superman II

From the description:

In this recurring series, we'll be taking a look at a variety of films that had historically troubled productions or controversial problems in making it to the big screen. Some were massive hits despite their problems, while others died a slow box office death. Regardless of where they ended up, we have to ask the question: WTF happened to this movie?

This episode we dive into the tumultuous production of Superman II, which saw director Richard Donner fired and replaced by Richard Lester, which caused a series of massive changes that disrupted Donner's original vision for the film. Decades later, The "Donner Cut" would be released and more light was shed on what went down during production.

A Slap in the Face

"If you want something, you have to go take it" is a common theme in movies about sports. The Rocky movies use this as a theme (though I don't recall if it's explicitly stated) as well, but I think one of the trainers tells Rocky something along the lines of "Take it."

Fighting for what you want in life often is intertwined with granting mercy to your enemy, as John Kreese declared in "The Karate Kid" (1984). He declared "mercy is for the weak" in the first movie as he instructed his Cobra Kai students as a motivational statement. I wasn't the only fan of the first movie to be satisfied with those words haunting him during the first few minutes of its 1986 sequel:

So, given all of that, I am confronted.

"Never fight. Nothing is worth fighting for."

WOW!

Talk about 7 words that fly in the face of what society taught me for the last 49 years, 4 months, 2 weeks, 1 day (18033 days)!

The "Thought for Today" continues with these words:

Never fight. Nothing is worth fighting for. Wisdom never fights, it waits patiently, speaks positively, releases easily, sees benefit in everything and envisions a future of abundance...knowing that all needs will be met at the right moment, in the right way.
If you think life is a struggle you will always be struggling, If you think life is a breeze, your attitudes and actions will convey lightness and easiness. And that's what attracts everything you need, and much more.
Make today a breeze not a battle.

Favorite SW Scenes

This is my favourite scene ever in Star Wars. So much going on with the characters. You might not have noticed, but your brain did. Quick breakdown for anyone who cares:
  • 0:55 Luke finally cops an attitude with Han after being talked down to by him throughout the whole first act
  • 1:48 Han reacts instantly and desperately to Luke being dragged underwater. Showing that he is possibly dependent on Luke to get out of this
  • 2:06 Han takes orders from Luke
  • 2:37 Han realizes he is indeed screwed without Luke's help
  • 2:55 Han reprises Luke's line from earlier. I feel this was definitely meant to show the strengthening relationship of the two, before it was turned into a running joke quote.
  • 3:53 C-3PO bluffs his way out of trouble to help his friends
  • 5:32 Luke loses his temper, proving that he's not as calm and mild-mannered as when he was first introduced
  • 6:04 C-3PO actually takes the blame for once, instead of pinning it on R2
  • 6:14 Leia and Han hug < 3 It's an amazing scene.

The Philosophy of Negan

How could anyone like Negan? Look at what he did to our group of heroes in the opening scene of season 7 Episode 1?
Warning: this scene could be considered "disturbing"...

There have been attempts to make Negan more sympathetic, after the above video.

I came across this video about the Negan character, which was posted 795 days (2 years, 2 months, 6 days) ago on 2/11/17.

I watched this video on the site as well. Coincidentally, it was published 2/11/16, exactly a year prior to the video above.

On This Date in the Past

In the #Flashback section within the Fox News First email that arrived in my Inbox at 4:43 AM, there are these milestones:

  • 1993: A federal jury in Los Angeles convicts two former police officers of violating the civil rights of beaten motorist Rodney King; two other officers are acquitted.
  • 1973: Federal Express (later FedEx) begins operations as 14 planes carrying 186 packages take off from Memphis International Airport, bound for 25 U.S. cities.
  • 1972: Boston Marathon allows women to compete for the first time; Nina Kuscsik is the first officially recognized women's champion, with a time of 3:10:26.
Reading more, I noticed this blurb and thought 7eventh Time Down was a typo:

The Todd Starnes Show, Noon, ET: The Christian rock group 7eventh Time Down will drop by the studio for a musical performance and Jeremy Dys, deputy general counsel for First Liberty Institute, will discuss Vice President Pence's upcoming commencement address at Taylor University.

LinkedIn Fail

Like Indeed.com, job alerts are often empty promises from LinkedIn. When I saw this, I thought, "Wow, that looks interesting." Sadly, the only reason the word "remote" and "RoboHelp" were 'hits' for this ad is because of this phrase: Remote Workers? Not eligible, must work onsite with the team, as shown below:

Keep in mind that the only reason I still see jobs through that LinkedIn email and jobs through Indeed.com emails is because I don't seem to be able to unsubscribe. I call it separation anxiety. I have always had it. I remember dwelling and dwelling about the girl I dated off and on in high school after high school and during the time when Karen broke up with me on October 29, 1988 at the Freaker's Ball (a Halloween dance) at Mount Mercy College*. We reconnected on New Year's Eve when I was with some friends at Econofoods (a long gone grocery store chain in eastern Iowa) to get booze. She was a checker there and because she was also friends with the friends I was with, she was invited to come to the party we were going to... and she did. I took her to a dance up at Mount Mercy College in January 1989 and then, that night, was the last time I said any words to her. It's kind of funny how some dates are etched in stone within my brain while others are not. I don't know remember the date on which we went to that dance. I do know that it was 30+ years ago.

Anyways, back to obsessing over the past. I find it hard to let go of the patterns and routines that I find myself in. For example, yesterday, I woke up to a 4:30 AM alarm and today, I woke up, without an alarm, at 4:25 AM, which is why I'm publishing this post at 5:30 AM.

*Why do I remember the date? This is how my mind works. I remember that date because it was two days before the Van Halen concert on October 31st at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The Rise

Creepy Unbroken Eye Contact

The first time I heard that the Johnny character in "The Karate Kid" is the hero of "The Karate Kid" was on the show "How I Met Your Mother" in a clip like this one:

Now, just the other day, I found this video, which lays out the same case:

Editor's Note: The argument has been made that Barney's opinion of the Johnny character in "The Karate Kid" was the inspiration for the series "Cobra Kai" on Netflix. https://prhmusic.blogspot.com/search/label/Cobra%20Kai

FROM MUSKIE TO HAWKEYE: WEISKAMP READY FOR NEXT CHAPTER

By RICK BROWN

DES MOINES, Iowa -- As the final seconds of Joe Wieskamp's heralded Muscatine High School basketball career ticked off the clock Tuesday, University of Iowa men's basketball head coach Fran McCaffery sat in the front row of a Wells Fargo Arena suite and clapped his hands.

"Good job, Joe," McCaffery said.

It had been a conflicted 90 minutes for McCaffery, who signed Wieskamp to a National Letter of Intent in November. McCaffery had cheered for his son, Patrick, and his Iowa City West teammates in the State Class 4A quarterfinal game. The opponent had been Wieskamp and Muscatine. West won, 62-50, despite 29 points and 11 rebounds from Wieskamp -- his 46th career double-double.

"Obviously he's going to cheer for his son," said Wieskamp, a 6-foot 6-inch guard. "But hopefully he was cheering for me as well. Hopefully I can come in next year and have an impact right away."

Wieskamp finished his career with 2,376 points (26.1 per game), the most for anyone at a Class 4A school and sixth best in state history. Now it's time for Wieskamp to turn the page. After a two-week break from basketball to refresh and re-energize, he'll get back to work...as a Hawkeye.

"That's going to be the mindset," Wieskamp said. "Preparing my body, everything, for the next level."

McCaffery started tracking Wieskamp's career shortly after being named Iowa's coach in March of 2010. Wieskamp was a fifth grader. Patrick McCaffery was in fourth grade, and played up with Joe's Iowa Barnstormers AAU team.

Wieskamp committed to the Hawkeyes as a freshman, and has polished his game to the point where he's a consensus top-100 prospect nationally. He knows he brings a lot of expectations with him to Iowa.

"Committing there young, I knew that the whole state would rally around me," Wieskamp said. "I've a lot of people supporting me. There are going to be some haters out there. But I think they appreciated how I committed early and stayed true. Hopefully I can produce for them next year."

McCaffery has watched Wieskamp's game evolve, from a shooter to someone who can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. The coach has no plans to temper expectations.

"He's ready for it," McCaffery said "I always say that's what these guys signed up for when they decided to play in the Big Ten. They want to play on a big stage. He's earned the right to be on that big stage and he's going to be really good."

So just what kind of player should Hawkeye fans expect to see?

"He makes plays," McCaffery said. "His assist-to-turnover ratio will be good. He's efficient. A lot of times you see he's scored a ton of points and you think he's taken a ton of shots. That's rarely the case. He shoots a high percentage, from both two and three. The game comes easy to him. Those guys are always in the right place."

McCaffery acknowledges that the step from high school to college is a big one.

"But he's physically ready," McCaffery said. "He's mentally ready and most importantly, his game is ready."

One of the most refreshing things about Wieskamp is the fact that he doesn't consider himself a finished product.

"I'm going to work hard in the off-season before I get there, every day, trying to get prepared for that level," Wieskamp said. "I have to add a little bit of strength to compete with those guys. They're a lot bigger in the paint, and I'm not going to be able to get those closer looks. I have to focus on my outside game, my mid-range game. I've got to focus on my ball handling, because they're going to get up into me. And they're going to be stronger, and a lot faster."

Wieskamp also goes to the videotape to pick up nuances of the game. He watches his favorite player, Devin Booker of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, every chance he gets.

"Joe fits in anywhere," McCaffery said. "He's a good rebounder and a good shooter. He can pass it and handle it. He can play anywhere from point guard to power forward. He defends. He has always played well in the clutch."

McCaffery was in the crowd when Wieskamp scored all 25 of his team's first-half points and finished with a career-best 54 against Bettendorf in a 64-50 victory on Feb. 2.

"I've never seen anything like it," McCaffery said. "Pretty impressive."

Wieskamp's resume includes making the NBPA Top 100 all-tournament team, and being chosen for the Adidas-U.S. Select Team. He has faced plenty of high-level competition on the AAU circuit playing for the Iowa Barnstormers.

"It doesn't matter whether it's high school, AAU, or a camp situation where he's thrown on a team with a coach he doesn't know and a bunch of players he doesn't know," McCaffery said. "He always excels because he has an incredible understanding of how to play. He's a fierce competitor, and he's incredibly talented."
