Is “The Black Album” Metallica’s finest hour? No, it’s not. A few tunes could be considered “filler” and have rarely been played in concert ("Holier Than Thou," "The Struggle Within," etc.), and many fans agree that Master of Puppets is the band’s masterpiece. But there is simply no denying that “The Black Album” is the release that made Metallica a household name.
I will quibble about the following:
- "The Struggle Within" is not a filler track, to me.
- I don't agree with the practice of citing two examples of a specific "thing" (in this case, two examples of "filler tracks") followed by "etc" because it makes me wonder, "What other "filler tracks" are in the writer's list?"
- Is the threshold for a track being labeled as "filler" that the tune is not played often in concert?
- Does "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" on And Justice for All qualify as a "filler track" since it is also not played often live? I answer, "No, it is not a filler track."
